Wrong Railing Damaged R62a 1 Train Derailment train 2176-2180 being towed past Times Square 42nd St

  • Because of the derailment a few days ago the MTA has been trying to restore service , move the derailed trains and fix up any damages
    One step is to transfer the damaged R62a’s to 207st yard
    It’s quite uncommon to see a move like this

    It is really amazing how some people just don't have a clue. You see somebody filming and you gonna walk right up in the shot, stand there and block the shot, then just walk away as slowly as you please. You're either oblivious to what goes on around you, just don't care, or a willing sociopath.

      Coincidentally, the passengers walked as passerby without knowing that the railfan was recording a shot of the scene. In society, you cannot please everyone, including the public.

      he looked dazed as hell to be honest, like you can kinda tell he was zoned out and not looking at the camera 😭 I sometimes do this too by accident so I’m trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Also like the person above me said people walk by and don’t see it all the time anyways. But other than that it was kind of odd that he js stood there and walked off slowly like that.

      MCB (diesel) to H2C (R62A) adapter. No electrical or pneumatic connections, it's all iron to iron only.
      The white cable you see is the MU cable that stretches to the other end of the train to connect to another diesel that can be hooked up on that end. If the diesel following connects to the other end then only the diesels (and their rider cars) provide braking, the 62As are dead weight

      Very much so will get used for parts. Those trains pushing almost 50 years so sad. I miss the Redbirds but seeing these get trashed and deemed a loss hurts

      2176 is the only car being scrapped. The rest are gonna be paired up with a single set 62a ( check my community post for more info )

      I hate it. People have no respect. However I’m used to it. Sometimes I yell at them afterwards but when the video is recording I have to keep it professional. These videos will last long after my lifetime so I wanna make sure they could be enjoyed for lifetimes if this makes sense

      Tell me about it. It took awhile for them to tow it. Another friend of mine saw heading up about two hours after I last caught it around chambers st. Its approximate speed was 3 miles an hour supposedly.

    So if the cars are being transferred to the 207st yard from an incident at 96st…what on earth are they doing at 42st!?

      The two southbound tracks are ok. The only place to switch to either of those two tracks from the northbound tracks south of 96th St was at the 42nd St... at the end you could see the train switched track. From there, they have options when to switch to local track to continue to 207th St yard.

      207 Street shop is the second largest train shop in America right next to Coney Island Shop. 207 Street handles major repair jobs to A-Division rolling stock, as well as some B-2 Division rolling stock.

      The routing took the trains down from the crash site at 96st , wrong railing on the express tracks to 42nd st ( where I recorded this ) , switched to the spur track and down the downtown express track to chambers street, then on the 1 line via South Ferry Loop and back up to 207st yard

    The MTA needs to reevaluate their "vandalized" train policy. I'm sure whatever the damage to the train caused by the vandals is in no way near the damage and cost caused by them attempting to enforce their policy. Way to go MTA!!! Another smart move.

      The train had to be taken out of service because the brakes wouldn’t reset on one of the trainsets. This was due to the emergency brakes being repeatedly pulled by vandals. The front trainset wasn’t functional, how do you expect them to keep it in service.

      ​@@mleoneeThe first trainset was out of service? How come nobody has brought up the 1970 Roosevelt Avenue collision? Wss the disabled train bring operated from the third car? Was it the disabled train that ran the red signals? Was there a crew member in the front car? What did he do at the signals? It all seems eerily familiar, except thank goodness for the fate of the passengers.

      @@harveywachtel1091 It's obvious that someone should have been in the first car to watch the signals and relay back to the operator that the home signal at the north end of 96th St. was set against them so that the in service train could cross over to the local track and resume its regular route. The only main difference from the 1970 Roosevelt Avenue accident is that the trains were fortunately going very slowly which reduced the number of injuries.

      @@1575murrayim late but the motorman that was operating that train when it had been vandalized was in the front car. The train supervisor was driving from the 6th car o the train. The Supervisor didn’t respond to his commands and ran thru the red signal at the diamond crossover with the other train crossing over it which had the train collide with jt.

    2176 is finished, but the rest of those cars will be fine, they'll just slap a single unit to 2177-2180.

    Looks like car 2176 was seriously damaged. I'm not sure if one of the other cars in the derailment can be used for 2177-2180. If not, then the other 4 cars in the derailment won't be in service again.
    That's a great video, even though it was still an incident.

      They still have plenty of R62AS on the 1 Broadway line and the 6 Pelham line.

      @@leecornwell5632 Most of the R62A cars are coupled into 5 car sets except for the two 6 car sets on the 42nd St. Shuttle. There should still be a few single cars somewhere so that one can be found to replace the damaged 2176. Something like this was done to replace a damaged R46 car which got wrecked at 14th St.

      Not necessarily. Much of the damage to 2176 is on the roof where it made contact with the ceiling of the tunnel. The front end of the Chicago train was smooshed in almost like an accordion.

      It is 50/50 because in 3 or so years these cars will be retired and replaced by R262

      The tracks and switches were already restored to excellent condition. Probably, the rails were not damaged or slightly damaged.

    Thanks for this video and the one at 207 ST. A comment further down says this towing consist is headed to the old South Ferry loop to go uptown to the 207 ST yard lead. I thought at this point the uptown tracks were both out of service and not passable. So how did the consist get to 207 ST? What am I missing? I'm guessing the tracks at the collision site were repaired by this time.

      If I recall correctly they towed them at a restricted speed over the collision site when heading back uptown

    So they were towing the train with 2 locomotives and a car in between them. What was the purpose of that car? Also, why was there another set following behind?
    One other thing, the yellow cars between the locomotives- what kind of cars were they?

      Not so fast! The upper left corner of the bonnet was damaged. I believe the bonnet will be replaced with a new one. That is a good reason the 5-car train was moved to 207 Street as the main shop which is the second largest train shop in America. You may want to read my comment for more information.

      @@captainkeyboard1007 But remember that the R62A is roughly 40 now. She’s not gonna be easy to repair, given her age. R46 got scrapped because at then 46, some of her couldn’t be repaired.

      @@kitsunefaye1661 The age of the railcar may not be decisive like the availability and the inavailability of spare parts. New York City Transit Car Equipment Department cannot afford to lose another railcar. The R46 cars are not altogether replaced. The R62A and R46 rolling stocks are not of the same division. The R62A is of the A-Division, and the R46 is of the B-1 & B-2 Divisions. Thank you for typing to me.

    2176-2180 were out of service due to someone going through and pulling emergency stop handles

    The one train a.k.a. 2176 is out of commission most likely they will send it to Ohio for spare parts

    Given how badly damaged 2176 is, and how likely it is they will be phased out starting sometime in this decade, I have little hope it'll return to service. What a shame, I rode on that car a few times in the past.

    Remember everyone the R62 and R62A will retire between the 2030s. The MTA still hasn’t found a bidder yet to built the R262s. That goes the same with the R68 and R68A when it comes to the R268s. The Wikipedia doesn’t have accurate information.

      A group of us know employees and a few dedicated railfans kept tabs on it all day. This one was the last one to leave and the most damaged.

    Interesting how they used two whole diesel shunter locos. What is the model I wonder? In Russia you wouldn't be able to fit a regular locomotive down into the tunnels so they use worker battery trains in the same gauge as the regular metro cars.

      The diesels (and the yellow car) provide all the braking power, the damaged train is just dead weight
      I believe the locomotive is called an R77

      @@this51man Awesome, thanks for sharing! I got stuck for like ten minutes on a malfunctioning subway car in Moscow before Christmas. Couldn't close the doors properly. Had to be hauled away but by a third-rail driven work train from the nearest depot.
