Every time you post a video, I always feel like you're talking to me. As a a therapist in a community mental health agency struggling with my own mental health, the push for productivity numbers is causing a lot of discontent with the therapists in my office. Thank you for all you do!

Oh my! Though I'm glad you find these videos validating, I'm sorry to hear about the experiences of you and your colleagues. It can definitely be rough out there. Wishing you the best as you keep pressing on in the trenches. ♥️

I agree with you they there needs to be reform in the schools/programs that we attend. (I’m a PT, not a psychologist, but similar issues exist in my world.) However, regarding the story about someone needing to miss a couple of classes for their wedding. I must say- who schedules a wedding during the middle of a semester?

It always seems forced how the school seems to enable stuff like this. I honestly think it even goes deeper than that because this mentality has leaked into our workplace culture as well. My current boss (I'm not a therapist) has definitely asked me weird things like asking me to ask neighbors for a ride to get to work, asking me to disregard important family matters/events, and even switching my schedule without permission. I thank awesome therapists such as yourself for reinforcing healthy boundaries because it is super important. Hopefully, we can change that narrative.

Ugh, those are some unfortunate boundary crossings. I hope things can shift in your context for the better!

I'm sorry you had appendicitis 😑
My two cents: Because every so often students disguise the truth, professors, teachers, etc. need to set up strict guidelines for their courses to avoid the abuse of "certain events".
It's the student's responsibility to speak in person with the professor after a serious event (like appendicitis surgery, for example) to acknowledge the situation of missing class and find out what options they have going forward. A student who only communicates via email and expects to continue as normal will most likely not receive any exceptions.

Bravo on advocating for yourself Dr. Fang. This brings back an awful memory from the night of my dad’s motorcycle wreck. I was in the middle of a 10 page paper in public health, I believe, when I got the news. He survived thankfully, but I didn’t get back home from the hospital until 3am and had 5 or so pages to complete 😳 I blazed through the rest of, submitting it with a few minutes to spare. I ended up getting an A on it, but it just highlights the pressure that we put on ourselves in school. Cheers to another great video 👍

Yikes! I'm so sorry to hear that happened. I definitely relate with the feeling that it wasn't even an option to ask for help or an extension, and feeling like we just needed to power through. You must have done some serious compartmentalizing to get that A! Most importantly, glad to hear your dad pulled through ♥️

Wow. Sorry to hear about your experience. That is a terrible message to send. I obtained a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Social Work and thankfully my professors were understanding when I had health/family issues that affected my school work. Not sure if the social worker vs. psychology disciplines are different in this regard or if it depends more on the professors themselves. This is a great reminder for self-advocacy in either case. Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I had this idea that somehow colleges in USA were different from Brazil, but I guess not. There was a lot of unhealthy communication and standards by professors in my university too. Our schedule was huge on sit in classes hours, when we complaint that there was very little time to really study and fulfill the assignments some professors would say "What do you do between 11pm and 07 am?" "I used to do two degrees and work, what are you complaining about?" between other things.
And I won't even detail the other much more toxic things going on in the classroom as "You thoughts and opinions don't matter before you have a doctor's degree" , "If you don't agree it's because you are resistant or dumb" etc.
Any school level should be a place for creativity and learning and it is so sad that for me university seemed like a "resistance test" were students were tortured until "only the stronger survived". It's sad, and even more sad when you see psychologists doing that (which were most of my professors).

Haha! Funny you mention my curls, they will make an appearance in tomorrow's video because I was too lazy to do my hair. Though I'm afraid they are not as mane-like as they were in my early 20s. Alas, such is life!

Thank you for sharing this. I am a kidney transplant recipient, so I am well aware of the possibility of health emergencies. I am still working on my bachelors degree, and I am considering going into the therapy field. It is stories like these that causes me stress about the future surrounding grad school. I wish that there were more legal protections for students surrounding health challenges. Love your channel!

Wow, I can't imagine the journey you've been on, and your stress looking ahead makes sense. I know my grad experience isn't universal, even though it's common. Feel free to see the grad application process as an opportunity for you to interview them (rather than the other way around!) and see who will be able to support your health and wellbeing. Best wishes to you!
