Nagatoro is the prime example of the Sadodere, as coined by the author themselves. Unlike Tsunderes who cover up their feelings with anger and/or violence, sadoderes do excessive amounts of teasing and jokes, which is just a another way of checking the boundaries of a relationship. Nagatoro goes too far in the first episode causing Senpai to cry but afterwards never crosses that line again. She slowly amps up her teasing to basically see how far she can go to get Senpai to stop being such a wimp and come out of his shell. She sees he's awesome and wants him and everyone else to see that as well

Yeah, but it should be pointed the original short comics was basically an abuse fetish in which Nagatoro would both physically and emotionally abuse the protagonist (who was almost always shown in a first person perspective) in some genuinely awful "pranks" and actions from fake cheating him, regularly calling him a lowlife who should kill himself and even "practicing" her judo on him and flat out commit assaults and battery.
The original concept was a lot more brutal and to say it was toned down once the main artist stopped doing hentai is an understatement. She was originally portrayed as a genuinely deranged individual who was simultaneously obsessed over the main protagonist attention and "love" whilst seeing how far she could mentally and physically break him, being neither a tsundre or yandere and more of just a full blown sociopath.
In the comic where she pretended to cheat on him we do see that in her own psychotic way she does "love" the protagonist as we do see for a moment that the prank leaves him so upset that he actually considers just leaving her and her reaction of his anger is one of alarm and fear but in the end he just accepts his role, holds hands to a relieved Nagatoro who never even apologized for her deeds.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish we had this version of Nagatoro. A tragic abuse relationship more akin Killing Stalking.

Some of the teasing is testing boundaries, but most of it is just flirting.
I want to note that Nagatoro considers Senpai's art to be very passionate and filled with soul, which is what draws her attention in the first place. The first time she hangs out with another guy, he is a musician, except he isn't serious about it. He doesn't put in the effort or heart that Senpai does, and she reacts with cold contempt. She never belittles Senpai's passion for art like she does the musician's lack of passion, and this shows that she considers being serious about creative pursuits to be important.
Actually ended up being an even bigger point later. She ran away from judo when a girl she used to beat easily trained and crushed her. Seeing Senpai show so much passion and determination for something regardless of whether he's the best or how others see it struck her straight to the core.
This is the first time I've heard him swear, uncensored, and it feels like a breath of fresh air.
He also swore in Black Panther’s alignment chart towards the end
Dude, before actually reading the manga I was totally in the "Nagatoro is toxic" "This is sick" crowd. I was only going to read it out of some morbid curiosity to see how bad it was gonna be but holy shit, this is the most wholesome romance thing I've seen/read since Toradora!.
Long story short: Don't always believe what you read online, kids!

@@Floored_boards They get better, like waaaaay better. Honestly they're only terrible in like the first interaction they have before they figure out what's going on, then they're the greatest wing women senpai could've asked for cutting through all of Nagatoro's bullshit like butter.
Also the first half of episode two was pretty trash because they were jamming chapters 4 and 5 together. They really should've been different days, plus the Garlic yakisoba is just a flatly better joke to end the bit with. Also having Senpai's manga be the To-love-ru parody and Nagatoro's manga be the Vampire one independently would've developed their characters as independent people better. Also the groping thing was a deliberate reversal of the "Accidental/Lucky pervert" troupe, and the way the anime treated really de-fanged the satire.

I'd love to see more Slice of Life romcom reviewed like this, I find the idea of judging the D&D Alignment of normal everyday people having normal yet weird lives interesting and fun. maybe do like Meet the Fockers movies or something

@@TheLoadingCrew I can't think of characters that stand out but I can think of shows or movies that would be interesting to have takes on the main characters. Also I can think of anime shows but alot of them are older like Love Hina or Oh my Goddess.
The anime movie Silent Voice would be really really good. Its about a guy who starts dating a death girl that he used to bully as a kid. One of the main topics it deal with is depression and suicide.
I kind of also want to see the anime movie Your Name reviewed, because the concept of body switching an morality implications of that I think would make for an interesting take on actions even if the characters themselves aren't the most interesting.
Not a romcon, but it's still slice of life. Violet Evergarden of the Violet Evergarden series. It's about a girl who was once a child soldier S rank killer but looses both her arms on her last mission and had replaced with mechanical ones. She gets a job as dictation secretary for the national post office. She starts the series as someone with little emotion but as she travels for work she opens up and gains some humanity
Main stream wise of views, Hotel Transylvania movies would be you best bet could be good and would be nice to see Dracula alignment in that. The four main American Pie movies could be good. Ravage of the Nerds?

As someone who is married to a woman with her own bratty charm and sense of humor, I find Nagatoro to be hilarious! She's like a condensed version of my wife, only amped up on enough cocaine to make Escobar's empire look like a cheap back alley operation.
I never got to have the chance to have any kind of relationship in High School, yet even I can recognize that Nagatoro isn't a sadist.
Truth be told, I probably would of committed legit murder back then if I had thought for one second I could get treatment like that. People don't know what it's like being THE OUTCAST and it shows.

Than yes, they probably never had romance in high school.
This series is probably the best teen romance I have seen out of an anime in terms of the development of the relationship, the characters and the somewhat realistic portrayal.
Sure in the first episode she takes it a bit far but she does apologize and does seem to know when she has crossed a line. past that she seems to more be picking on him as a way to boost his own self confidence and to hide any of her true feelings.
Despite the fetishy origins of the manga it has some of the most wholesome moments of any anime I have ever seen.

I wasn't mad with Nagatoro despite never being able to have any kind of romantic relationship at all.
Certain people just love to get offended and can't chill out for the life of them.

I wouldn't say I love to be offended, but having been flat out physically and sexually abused and surviving with permanent damage I take bullying seriously. People show their love differently, true, but don't do the kinky or violent stuff in public, don't normalize bullying tactics in a school romance as healthy, and don't show the protag-kun being celebrated for being a doormat. It's one thing if you are showing the evil for a victorious good at the end or to bring awareness, it's another completely to just write off demeaning acts and abuse as "that's just how X is, grow a thicker skin".
Love is just another relationship, and we all need to learn how navigate those. Promoting an unhealthy relationship as cute is toxic. Compare Ed and Winry with their equal outbursts (never one sided, Ed never threw a wrench back at her but he didn't take it lying down) vs Light and Misa working in tandem to exploit Misa for Light... then this show saying she bullies Senpai because she has a crush on Senpai and he takes it, repeatedly, every day. That sends a message to idiots like you and me that this behavior is good and normal. It may be common and normal and spices up life but it's hardly good or healthy.
Again, I don't seek to be offended! I hate it honestly. But what I hate even more is when people are given a pass because of their personality when the rest of us are expected to deal with it. Like, grow up already, it's not 3rd grade anymore and we know hitting people isn't cool, so stop with the mental hitting and physical hitting and turning life into the Looney Tunes and parading it as nothing to bat an eye at.
About time someone stood up for my favorite series, all those people on Twitter just didn't give the series a chance to prove them wrong

For the first 2 or 3 episodes she doesn't really understand her feeling towards him. Once she starts understanding her feelings and gets to know him she not only chills a lot but becomes very protective of him. It starts rough but becomes something very special especially later in the manga. I recommend the manga to people who love the slow burn romance comedy with heart. Not only do they have their own interests but they support eachother in them. Sunomiya Hana is my favorite character but you meet her later. PS nekotoro is amazing lol.

@@TheLoadingCrew its a shame. Its one of my favorite rom com. Several of the ones I read have gotten anime adoptions so I guess I have decent tastes? Maybe? Or varied enough taste lol. Teasing master takagi-san (and its spin off about when the characters are older) is one I recommend as well. Amano Megumi is full of gaps is a fun one but never got an anime. Its done now too.

@@slevinchannel7589 Well it’s probably true if they’re also willing to attempt to cancel the series over an average amount of fan service that’s actually wayyyy less than some other popular shows. (For example of a show that fan-services more than Nagatoro, My Hero Academia)
LOTS of really famous Mangaka start out with, or dip into, Hentai. It's actually really cool when you see a doujin artist get serialized by a major magazine, because the art is almost always fantastic and highly detailed. Before doing Dr. Stone and Sun-Ken Rock, Boichi was a Hentai artist. The creators of Shokugeki no Souma and Tenchi-muyo also got their starts in Hentai.
Incidentally, the same is true of voice actors(seiyuu). Lots of seiyuu get their do voices for Hentai OVAs before they get cast in major roles.

i absolutely laugh how some people treat as artists having done hentai/Porn/etc makes them less artists, it makes me laugh every time someone states that just because someone makes/made adult content they are less or an artist/person ,so immature.

I would also like to point out that the if the roles were reversed argument doesn't work when things like 50 shades and twilight exist and were wildly successful. They are way worse than If you reversed the roles in nagatoro.

When I first saw the memes and clips of the more ANIME moments, I thought this show was just gonna be just a simple ecchi anime. But after watching this video, now I'm genuinely interested and will probably watch it soon.
It's definitely not ABOVE being a typical ecchi comedy at times and will even indulge in that, but its got some genuine heart to it. Its cute and it can be quite sweet and tender at times.

I've not watched Nagatoro; but I know enough about it via osmosis to know yes; Nagatoro is not a sadist. The show is about how both Senpai and Nagatoro help each other develop. And also, teenage love. Not something I ever really had to me, but I *saw* it often enough. Especially since my friend group was mixed gender.

Honestly, artistic expression is often expressed with lewd expressions first because it's the easiest to get into the market for. So hearing "THIS ARTIST DID PORN!!!11!!1!" As an excuse to not like the artist in question is a poor excuse to me. As long as no laws were broken, I see no reason why porn should be seen as any lesser of art than other artwork

Isn't it weird how sex positivity is so important and we need to support artists who draw sexual stuff because it helps them survive, but then the moment an artist draws something they don't like, suddenly the porn in their history is a deep shame that has to be "brought to light"? @@TheLoadingCrew Yep. I've seen the anime (well, admittedly only 6 episodes. I couldn't stomach any more) I've also played D&D for 40 years, so I have a good grasp of its alignment system.
Miss Naga is neutral. She follows the rules when it suits her, but is not afraid of throwing the rules out when they become inconvenient.
Miss Naga is also evil. This one is more subjective and she does teeter of the border of neutral, but she is in no way good. She takes pleasure in the discomfort of those she likes, and is normally indifferent to those she doesn't like. Just because senpai enjoys torment doesn't make her torment of him good; it makes him a masochist.
Playful ribbing of friends is a common thing is school age kids. Heck, even in adults. But continually pushing a person to the point of tears before backing off and saying "sorry" is not playful banter... It's emotional abuse. Been there, done that, have the scars to prove it.

apparently she struggled with a lisp all her life and finally landed a big role. super happy for her
To me Nagatoro is just as socially awkward as Senpai, just in a different way. She likes him but cant bring herself to admit it easily. She is fine with friendship and teasing, but she is attracted to senpai and doesnt know how to deal with that. It feels like she is trying to play relationship chicken with him, trying to get him to confess first so she can agree and they are dating. Yes some of her actions are borderline behavior, but you can tell she doesnt mean to hurt him and she gets flustered just as easily as he does when the tables are turned.

Just going to mention, I really wish they'd included the little extra bits between chapters. Lots of series seem to do this in their full volume versions, one-page, often one-frame, images showing a different perspective or a little more information into the situation. Those bullying situations in the first ep, where she apologized afterward? She was apparently feeling really awkward and wondering if she'd accidentally gone too far. She wasn't trying to actually hurt him; she just wanted to tease him a bit in connection to things she actually liked about him (her first reaction to his manga, for instance, was how awesome it was that he was doing this), but her interest and enthusiasm combined with her inexperience in this type of relationship led to her going much further than she'd intended.
Also adorable how, in the manga scene early on where she kissed him on the cheek (the plushy fake-out was an alteration to let them put the kiss at the end of the season) for his first proper drawing and then took off, the extra showed her running top speed with her hand over her lips screaming "I went WAY too far!!!!!"
that last little bit was adorable and funny :)

(Edit) I guess I could see her being Chaotic Good too, but I haven't read the Manga. I think most of it has been Chaotic Neutral so far. Still a fun series. xD
I guess the line is is she doing it because she just likes to mess with him, or is she doing it to help him improve?
Honestly, I just have zero tolerance for behavior like this. After dealing with real bullies for all of my life in school I'm on a hair trigger for this kind of stuff. If someone came up to me and acted like this I'd have their face in the ground before I could think. But that's where the key lies. Senpai while uncomfortable goes along with it and things start to change. I wouldn't be able to even give a person the chance.
I'm a bit bias on this anime because i had a girlfriend like Nagatoro who just loved to tease and poke fun at me in a non-malicious or cruel way. but while i didn't mind it to much, i find that teasing and poking fun can get stale, and sometimes annoying. so while it is cute and fun watching sempai and Nagatoro go about their convoluted and roundabout flirting, i also shake my head at times about some of the shenanigan's.

I'm not gonna lie, I feel like you put her at Neutral because your shifts in alignment are very small, you wanted to make sure she ended up somewhere in the Good alignments, and if she started in Evil you'd never make it there by the end. I respect it because I agree that she starts non-Good at the very least and ends solidly Good (almost like, you know, some kind of character arc), but it always stands out to me when I see what seems like a bit of a rationalization is all. Neutral is a great baseline alignment but I think you could also make an argument that her initial teases are very self-centered ("I like this guy, but I show my affection by being mean and cruel, so I feel most comfortable doing something that makes me happy and not someone else") and thus Evil, and the idea of "oops I went too far I need to judge how much mean-ness I'm allowed to expose this guy to" shifts her directly into Good on maximum overdrive because she completely changes her attitude about it. Basically you're right but also this feels like an option.
Also I think part of the reason why so many people get on Nagotoro's case is just the kind of people she's sort of meant to appeal to. She definitely is aimed towards a very specific kind of person, and it's less that people have a problem with Nagotoro herself and more what she tends to represent on the greater online sphere and the kind of people who co-opt her, if that makes any sense. Basically I think Nagotoro falls into the unfortunate trap of "I don't hate you, but I hate the people who like you, so I hate you by extension". It's really just another case of human beings letting hate and cruelty guide their actions rather than rational thought.
No, I just genuinely think Nagatoro is a romanticization of abuse. One that really, really irritates me since I KNOW people who have been abused and are in active therapy because of people a lot like her.
I don’t like her because of the fact that Nagotoro willingness to test boundaries with no real foresight into how it make a person feel. As someone with Autism and General Anxiety Disorder, I have trouble talking with people normally, so Nagotoro’s teasing is a lot to more harmful; if I encountered someone like that in real life, I wouldn’t intact with them unless absolutely necessary and seeing a person like that on screen is extremely disturbing. Even though the height of her teasing occurs early on in the series and that she’s testing Senpai’s limits, he way of doing so is just too much.
I personally don’t care if you like the show (after all everyone is entitled to their opinions), but paint everyone who doesn’t like the show as not thinking rationally and putting their actions first. Of course there are people who did that for both supporters and detractors (especially early in its’ airing), but acting like that’s the majority is not false, but puts you and the show’s defenders in a bad light.
Alright, gotta admit I was suspicious of this show based on what I've been told, but you've done a good job convincing me to give it a shot. I mean technically I've spoiled myself by watching this, but I think it's worked to help balance out my preconceptions and watch the show on its own terms. So kudos!
This series reminds me of being a "shoulder" to cry on for friends who were trying to start relationships in middle school and high school. Even though I've only ever having had three actual girlfriends and technically one boyfriend. I'm shit with relationships is what I mean. But instead of giving decent if mediocre advice, I'd give them purposely shit advise to get them to think for themselves and not rely on empty platitudes everyone else gave them. Not just because it was easier and hilarious, but because I would do a one eighty and tell them to just talk to the one they were attracted or to have them ask themselves why they liked the person they were after. Definitely a huge fan of Nagatoro, but personally id say that Teasing Master Takagi-san is my favorite slice of life. It gets compared to Nagatoro a lot as well
