  • The Ravenscar Railway Tunnel is a hidden gem from 'The Town That Never Was'. In this film I explore the disused railway line between Scarborough and Whitby and focus on Ravenscar (known as the town that never was) and its railway station which was axed by Beeching in the 1960s and its impressive abandoned tunnel that a lot of people don't know about.

My grandad was signalman at Ravenscar station in WW2. Later he was signalman at Market Weighton and lived at Shiptonthorpe (londesborough) Railway station after the york to hull closure up until 2005. He once told me stories of how he could hear Hull being bombed all the way from Ravenscar and how a WW2 plane crashed into Ravenscar cliff when he was at work. Very scary. My Grandma used to work at Ravenhall. I will have to check out the tunnel someday

Wow they’re amazing stories. Quite scary too. Never heard about a plane crashing there, that is terrifying.

In the 1930s the LNER also looked at extending the platforms of the stations on the line between Scarborough and Loftus to reduce delays during the summer months as trains had to make 2 stops at each station due to trains being longer than the platforms, but nothing happened as the cost of the work far exceeded the revenue generated by the line. Around the same time they also looked at the Darlington to Saltburn line which was also suffering from delays. Marske station got longer platforms and Redcar Central got as second platform as revenue from the line was sufficient to cover the cost in a reasonable timeframe.

That concrete block was the footings for the waiting shelter on the Whitby bound platform. You can just mak it out in the pictures of Ravenscar station on the Disused Dtations website.
