Nothing more than a glider. The aircraft we use today is thank to the Wright brothers.
The Wright brothers used Cayley's work. Without it they'd still be on the ground.
The first to ever fly a heavier than air powered machine was the Brazilian Alberto Santos Dumont, in 23rd Oct 1906 in front of a crowd of people at the Bagatele field in Paris, not the Wright Brothers who claimed they flew before in the middle of nowhere with only one of their assistants as a "witness" and a picture that came up after the Dumont flight!
We should remember that during Cayley's lifetime, the notion of flying machines was pure fantasy. Naturally, his family, part of the aristocracy, would want to avoid ridicule at all costs. No doubt, Sjr George was battling headwinds on many fronts.

So do you have some proof that Cayley actually flew in gliding flight? I have only seen a video of a replica launching as a kite, and crashing as a kite.
How about some pictures of the actual place he had that boy and his coachman actually flew? And some pictures of his home and places would be good.

Why did Wright bothers not just put an engine in this
Most engines of the day (typically early car engines) were either too heavy to be fitted onto aircraft, lacking in power, or both. Hiram Maxim, inventor of the machine gun, tried to build his own triplane with a powerful engine. It was capable of short hops but was ultimately underwhelming. The Wright Brothers were unsuccessful with conventional engines because they were too heavy for their gliders, so they had Charles Taylor build a custom engine.

Thank you. I get heartily sick of people who believe the Wright Brothers were the first. No one ever mentions that they studied George Cayley’s scientific findings on aerodynamic lift and drag. Years and years before the Wright brothers built their first glider.
They were this is a glider. Not an engine airplane that the weight brothers made.

Great video ! Very curious to see the field and incline of the slope. Derek Piggot flew a replica of Caley's glider for a BBC programme back in 1973. It can be seen on a Dutch youtube ; "caley 1853". Derek call the control "tiller" more an "influencer"! No wonder the coachman got the fright of his life.

Really enjoyed this. Curious abt well known and hidden gems in England...i know so little abt monuments, history, stories, etc. It is the best way to learn (2nd best to actually traveling there).

My grandad was signalman at Ravenscar station in WW2. Later he was signalman at Market Weighton and lived at Shiptonthorpe (londesborough) Railway station after the york to hull closure up until 2005. He once told me stories of how he could hear Hull being bombed all the way from Ravenscar and how a WW2 plane crashed into Ravenscar cliff when he was at work. Very scary. My Grandma used to work at Ravenhall. I will have to check out the tunnel someday

THERE IS ANOTHER TRAM LIFT ON THE SOUTH BAY NEXT TO SALMONELA TOWERS THE GRAND HOTEL TAKES YOU DOWN TO THE BEACH OR UP TO THE TOWN.

They’re used to be 5 in scarborough at one point. Only 2 in action now.
There is a house on Carr Lane which was on the side of the line before the secret bridge. The owners have cut the full length of their hedge in the shape of a steam engine and carriages. It looks very good.

They're had been proposals to re-open railway lines which alot of them fell victim to the Beeching Axe
In the 1930s the LNER also looked at extending the platforms of the stations on the line between Scarborough and Loftus to reduce delays during the summer months as trains had to make 2 stops at each station due to trains being longer than the platforms, but nothing happened as the cost of the work far exceeded the revenue generated by the line. Around the same time they also looked at the Darlington to Saltburn line which was also suffering from delays. Marske station got longer platforms and Redcar Central got as second platform as revenue from the line was sufficient to cover the cost in a reasonable timeframe.
That concrete block was the footings for the waiting shelter on the Whitby bound platform. You can just mak it out in the pictures of Ravenscar station on the Disused Dtations website.

You should look at the beaches up the coast at Seaton Carew bus station I'm pretty sure the longest I've seen in England indeed the world!The Scarborough to Whitby line was actually Scarborough to Middlesbrough and still exists in part the section Boulby to Middlesbrough still exists but is freight only to Saltburn and it has a disused station with the platforms intact at I think Brotton or Skelton can't remember which.

Yorkshire also has the oldest operating water balance cliff railway a little further up the coast at Saltburn. Scarborough started out as a water balance lift, but was converted to electricity for its reopening in 1947.
I’m planning on doing a video about the Saltburn cliff lift at some point too.
@@iansmithtravels whilst you're up there, if time and weather permits I'd recommend taking the footpath behind the Ship Inn in Old Saltburn (it's part of the Cleveland Way) to the top of Hunt Cliff and around to the fan house beside the railway for the ironstone mine at Hunt Cliff. The mine closed in 1906 and is one of the more visible relics of the ironstone mines in East Cleveland. Or there's always the the incline up to the Rosedale Branch which closed in the late 1920s.

You're correct about why the names are different to the closest village names. The NER did this in many places to stop passengers being directed to the wrong train.
The coachman who took the first flight resigned on landing and left Cayley's employment.

It was never a church as such - it was effectively a mortuary to place the deceased before burial, and could hold a small committal service if necessary. Access can be arranged through the local C of E parish churches.

Yes, George Cayley was the pioneer of aviation. I don't believe that the European had nothing to do before Wright brothers.
The Wrights devoured everything they could find out aviation, including the lift/drag data on aerofoil sections, coming out of Europe. They built their first gliders using this data and discovered that there was do nothing wrong with the data, leading them to invent the first wind tunnel in America (I can't recall if someone in Europe already had one). The European data had come from the use of whirling arm rigs, which gave misleading results. It was this scientific approach that gave them the first controllable powered aircraft. However, they did impinge on a little known British patent in their methods of roll control. This patent was so forgotten that the inventor and his family had also forgotten it.
This is awesome to see as it's where some of my ancestors lived.

Stumbled upon your video when looking for info on the Scarborough to Pickering old railway which I didn't really know existed. We live in East Ayton and I knew there was a station in West Ayton but just hadn't really thought too much about the line it served. Definitely found this very interesting and we're going to do the walk from Wykeham to Brompton and see the little church! Looking forward to part 3 now! Thank you
