Grand Seiko 9F Quartz Video: • Why Grand Seiko are am...
When I'm scrolling through Instagram at watches there aren't all that many that will stop me from scrolling purely because of the watch, it's usually because of the photograph - composition, lighting etc. But this Grand Seiko SBGV245 is one of those watches that really intrigued me. It looks amazing, tool like, but also nicely simple.
I was lent this watch for a few weeks by a chap on instgram (@timgreen81). It was great to be able to get hands-on with this watch. I have a passion for high-end quartz watches, and the 9f quartz movement from Grand Seiko is one of the best. I think this watch is a bargain, it's great value for the level of watchmaking and the money.

Grand Seiko 9F Quartz Video: ruclips.net/video/bXNgcGLODUA/видео.html
Have you seen the Seiko SBGA385 ?
Cheers Adrian, glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
Congrats on owning this. It's a lovely watch mate. Cheers!
Sumanth D cheers!
You're a diamond for making this possible, Mr. Green!
Dude, did you notice the circular dot on the bezel to the right of the 5 min. marker? I thought it could have been a bit of water or even purposeful machining. What the hell is it? Did Adrian take a drill to your bezel :)
Grand Seiko is for total bellsniffs. Pathetic brand for beta males
I honestly think high end quartz is an under-served category. It would be cool to see more high tech innovation for quartz movements
So good. I was lucky enough to get one of these from the Sydney Grand Seiko boutique a few months ago and they haven’t had one in since. Has the most wrist time out of all of my watches. Can’t get enough.
Congratulations, it's my favourite Grand Seiko
I love that watch! Strap combos are limitless.
How's it go with scratches?
dom0 the bezel design really picks up dents quickly due to the crisp edge. I tried this watch on last week and the display model even had a small ding. With the crisp design it is very noticeable unfortunately and turned me off as I am looking for a sporty watch that I can take everywhere. If you look at their 60th anniversary model with the blue bezel (I also looked at this one) - that’s the same case but GS went and used a ceramic bezel to solve the issue with dents. Unfortunately I don’t care for the blue and red elements of the anniversary release.
@@ZachBie It's the same with any highly finished watch, my cousin's nautilus has a bunch of scratches and dents. People either will baby the watch or not care about it getting scratched. But I agree I am not fond of the colours on the limited edition blue ceramic bezel
This is a insanly good looking watch!
Why? Its very plain
I love me some sweeping seconds but there's also something immensely satisfying with seeing a perfectly aligned seconds hand on quartz watches. The technology behind 9F quartz and the finishing on the casing makes it definitely something to consider! - Han
Own this watch for a year and half, and I love it. I get +2 sec/year, it's the perfect watch for an active life style because of the 9F robustness, 200m WR, lumes and it is also antimagnetic. It can also look dressier on a leather strap.
What straps would you recommend for a dressier look. Just bought one as my “dressy” piece as I don’t want. A watch only for a couple times a year. But this one can do both I think
The strap I would recommend is taking your GS off, then applying a blue alligator strap to it from a shop called 'Grand Seiko is a brand for worthless dogs' then throw it straight into the bin.
@@neallbrick9389 A black alligator looks very sharp on it in my opinion.
That's a beautiful watch that Tim owns! He clearly has great taste in watches, so a big thank you to Tim for lending it to bark & jack to review. Cool video Adrian, hope you and family are keeping well and have settled in Scotland nicely
I really enjoy the fact that this is another adult conversation about quartz. As always, Adrian's photography is spot on. I would add, however, that Grand Seiko finishing is one of those things that simply has to be seen to be appreciated. The polished angles on the hands and markers are pretty spectacular. The dial certainly "sparkles" as you turn your wrist.
Love the flat grey dial. Really makes everything stand out like you said.
I see so many great looking quartz watches and I can't continue to justify my no quartz policy, something I just picked up from RUclips. This is beautiful, I don't care anymore I'm getting a good quartz next year.
It reminds me of the brutalist looks, with those sharp edges, of the Tudor North Flag.
The dimensions of this watch are perfect and although it has a brutalist with harsh angles it is surprising pleasant to look at!
7:27 “I like the idea of simplicity, I like the idea that stuff is hidden underneath...”
You’ve crystallized exactly what draws me to great watches... and this channel Adrian. Bravo on delivering another seemingly simple and utterly stellar video!
Nice piece! I've seen this a few times on instagram and had to stop scrolling. Great editing as always, cheers Adrian!
Thanks for watching Vinny.
Adrian, your decision making process has left me baffled again! Everything you say about this watch is glowing and positive. Indeed I have heard myself say the same things, and then I buy the watch. But you finish by saying that you will not buy it! Amazing.
But this is one of the reasons why I so enjoy your channel. Continue your exploration of your love of watches, and I look forward to being baffled by you in the future.
John fenech, wow! Here I was thinking if I was the only one. I've seen and watched reviews of many a watch that I've thought I would buy in a heartbeat. Till I actually had it on wrist and I couldn't bring myself to do it. Well, sometimes it's really about how you feel when it's actually on your wrist.
Every time I see a GS it feels like I am seeing in 4K for the first time, if that makes any sense. Everything is just so crisp. Your excellent camera work also contributes to that, of course.
Great video, Adrian.
Another cool feature is that it’sone ofthe few GS non-divers that have lume. Love my two GS with 9F-movements. Not cheap one might say, but cheaper than the mechanical and stilll the stunning finish
I have a Sarx055 but aspire to a GS with 9F movement.
The lume on this watch destroys the look of the watch. Watch would look much better without the lume.
@@belmondo8741 So how will you look at it in the dark then?
@@hathaway.1166 You don't. Rather not have lume and have the watch look awesome, than have lume and make the watch look awful.
This is the best looking watch I’ve seen.
Love how underrated GSeikos are.
They are becoming rated in the community, they need to tweak a few things regarding their bracelet and as Adrian mentioned their proportions and then with a bit of marketing they will be a force to be reckoned with.
GS will become the luxury watch brand in this decade.
Fantastic watch and excellent accuracy,Seiko is top quality.
Beautiful watch!!
Grand Seiko know how to make high end watches, definitely on my list of brands to own.
strongly advise the spring drive snowflake with steel markers. The spring drive in the collection is something special. The design will bore you at the start, but it will grow on you to the point of it becoming your preferred watch. It is comfortable and light weight.
I really hope GS would start using this case on automatic sports watches. Like an anti-magnetic auto milgauss killer
I think they would have to change it and make it thicker. So it would be slightly different. I do agree that it has some interesting and unique elements though.
Or a SPRING DRIVE version
That’s a very cool piece. You’ve already convinced me about the 9F. Will consider this one as my next purchase...after I get a bigger house. We keep having kids and are living in the house I bought as a bachelor...so it’s a bit tight.
Patience... Same here. Eventually it will happen for us!
This is a insanly good looking watch! And the camera work was spot on! Awesome job Adrian!!
This would be the only Quarz to buy for me. Great watch and great content.
I agree. I have the SBGV243. It looks different than the rest and drew my eyes as well.
Got both an automatic and a wuartz after watching your video. Guess which GS gets more wrist time? The quartz!! Love its accuracy. Love how thin it is. Love how its always ready to strap on and go without adjusting and the double logos.
Absolute winners, all of em
This may be one of the 2 or 3 Grand Seikos that I absolutely love. Wonderfully understated and elegant.
That was kind of a surprise ending. I really thought you were going to go for that piece. I've seen it in a case here in New Jersey. Back before Christmas when I was shopping.(Remember in person shopping? Sigh...) I was at least as enamored of it then as you are now. I ended up getting a Hamilton for my college girl niece/God-daughter. But I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. It really is an unusual and satisfying package.
p.s. That's a sweet lookin' strap by you.
I bought my first seiko in 1984 with money left over after buying my first car. The ‘83 Giugiaro speedmaster. When Seiko came out with the 9f quartz in ‘88, I was a working lad going to university so no spares to acquire that bit (rightfully so anyway). Still have the Speedmaster and still want a 9f quartz, always have. That one is a beauty.
I own three GS watches (an automatic, a hand wound and a spring drive) and the SBGV245 has caught my attention because it represents a simple visual refinement which is quite separate and apart from the consequence of the 9F quartz movement. I find GS very satisfying from the standpoint of daily use. The 9F quartz movement is more akin to the great Honda racing engines than to one’s ordinary comprehension of a quartz movement for reasons which take a little digging.
That camera pan at the start. Classy.
Thanks buddy. 🙌🏻
Bark and Jack Did you enlist one of the kids...hopefully they will they are on the B&J payroll!
I think making review of not mainstream watches like this makes your channel more interesting
That light grey dial in combination with the olive NATO strap Looks Amazing!
Greetings from Germany 😄👍🏼
This is a beautiful piece! I love the grey color way!
That grey is so nice! Grand Seiko do it like no other!
Been wearing this piece a few months now and enjoy it very much. I like to have at least one watch that’s ready to go when I am not up to twisting and turning a crown. 🤦♂️
There’s a big level of luxury in picking up a watch and knowing it’s ready to go. 👍🏻
Bark and Jack spending 2400 on a quartz to some is insane. But the money spent is worth it in my opinion. The overall finish is the highest quality I’ve seen in this price. You should really give it some time on the wrist. I wear it on a rubber strap with the GS clasp. Greens, grays and black make the dial pop. Depending on lighting the dial can be taupe, gray or silver. It’s my GS version of a DJ.
Wow, the stock strap is one of the best I have seen in a while, aftermarket included
I agree. It was really impressed with it. 👍🏻
I’m a bit obsessed with this one right now. Currently own a 214270 and 114060 and looking to add a third watch. I place a big emphasis on utility when it comes to my watches. Let’s face it - a man can only wear one watch at a time. I don’t want to get overloaded with mechanicals and deal with all of that winding/setting as a result. That’s where the quartz comes in - it will always be ready and always set to the right time. Beyond dealing with the date every month or so and daylight savings time, it requires no interaction whatsoever. Oh and by the way it has the added benefit of being incredibly versatile and incredibly gorgeous. This watch could kill on just about any strap you could throw at it. It has a modern design but with the Japanese design cues it will look just as timely/striking decades from now as it does today. Simply put it is a phenomenal watch, full stop.
Just because of this man . I simply have to own a Grand Seiko . The watches are just marvellous
I've had an SBGV027 Grand Seiko limited edition quartz in a deep red for a few years. Amazing. It's nice having a high quality quartz in the collection. I can pick it up any time and it's ticking away with the accurate time. Photos never do Grand Seikos justice. You have to have it on your wrist to appreciate the beauty.
Not boring at all That's one dope piece. Love the case geometry. And I love grey. Now I want it too ...
So happy that Grand Seiko has been recently getting the attention it deserves!!
I had my eyes on this for a while.. amazing camera work by the way!
Hey Adrian, what a cool video. I own the Grand Seiko Sport watch and I feel even though it's a quartz watch it has mojo and soul. I've never owned a watch this accurate before or one that felt better on my wrist. I think of it as a Japanese Explorer with a super quartz movement. It's highly functional yet elegant too and a bargain at 3000.00.
Having tried this watch on in person, it is the flashiest, non-flashy watch I may have ever tried on. From a distance, the applied indices and faceted polished case features damn near make the watch look like it has pavé diamonds, but certainly not in a gaudy way at all.
This watch is gorgeous in all aspects but when it comes to quartz, I just love to see how the secong hand hits every single index. Btw that strap is simply beautiful.
I love mechanical watches, but High Accuracy Quartz movements got me in, really looking forward to get my first one, probably some Longines VHP. It's impressive in this Grand Seiko how the minute hand actually ticks as well with every second!
That...is a beautiful watch. Period.
I have the black face SBGV243 version of this watch. Wonderful! A pleasure to wear and so under the radar. Phenomenal workmanship. Love the yellow accents that are there, but not obtrusive. With a Watch Steward strap, it is extremely comfortable and good looking. I also have a few good automatics, and I'd buy this Grand Seiko quartz again!
Simplicity done exceptionally well, I had to buy one - GS SBGV245. Upon first sight in person, this watch is everything Adrian said it is and then some more. Immediately I was drawn to the simplicity of the dial, the polished and brushed case, along with the inner second track, applied lume indices. This is my 4th GS piece, 3 of which are quartz (SBGNs 005 and 007) and an SBGH269 hi-beat.
GS ran out of production on this watch and it was no longer available. However, my merchant reached out to GS and was informed that GS will produce one last production run - that's how I got mine. Get it while you can.
Thats one hell of a nice watch - WOW!!!
Lovely watch which looks especially good on the grey nato! 👍🏻 Love Grand Seiko and recently saved up enough to buy one - the SBGA285 which I am very pleased with.
Congrats mate. GS are amazing.
Bark and Jack They certainly are! I agree that GS can look simple at first glance, but it’s the execution of the details that demands closer inspection. I’m looking forward to see which one you buy... 😉
Great looking watch. Wish they made it with a Spring Drive! Keep up the great work!
The camera work keeps getting better and better
Thanks a lot mate. 🙌🏻
The camera work is AWESOME
Really enjoyable video, I like your style and how open and not pretentious these are. Cheers
Thanks so much Joe 👍🏻
Love how the beat of the song matched the ticks of the second hand. Nice work!
Thanks for noticing that. 🙌🏻
I recently acquired a Bulova Lunar Pilot and it's a great quartz watch (if you've got ~7"+ wrists), but it's no luxury watch of course. For a luxury HAQ, I'd look to Citizen's "The Citizen" and of course Grand Seiko's 9F-based watches. This is one of the most appealing 9F watches I've seen. It's a timeless design, won't clash with anything, and I think 40mm is a perfect size for a dress watch for many guys. I'd like to see more HAQ options at different price points (and sizes), because quartz should have its own chances to shine & provide the best of what it can offer. For many buyers, a $3K watch may be doable but also a bit of a stretch, and it's nice for those folks to not have expensive servicing to look forward to. I think it's a legitimate perspective on watches to only care about how the watch looks, feels, and behaves, and what it takes to keep it working properly over time (and not what's inside the case, or the particular finishing methods used, or anything else that went into its creation). It's not _exactly_ my perspective, but I see it as a reasonable one.
I also like the idea of needing to know the watch to understand what is going on which is why I've always loved the JLC True Second
Great review. I'm almost sure that I actually held this watch in my hands on my last visit to the Grand Seiko boutique in London just two weeks ago. I very nearly pulled the trigger on it as I was also shopping for a 9F movement however once I tried on the 60th anniversary SBGP015G with the 9F85 movement (limited to just 2000 pieces) I was hooked and yes I walked out with it. I just love this piece and it has become my daily. It would be well worth doing a review of this watch you will not be disappointed.
I love this watch. One passed through Porter and Sons earlier this year but I wasn't in the position to make it mine. Maybe one day...
I've been noticing the SBGV245 on your wrist in some of your more recent videos, and I was really looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Great video! I think you hit the nail on the head when you described the case design as "brutalist."
Simply beautiful, precision watch making and intelligently executed. It’s Grand Seiko at its best. Dare I say the execution asks Rolex to raise its game 🤔
Looks totally stunning with the NATO. Improved a stunner by a mile.
Nice advert Adrian. Just bought the strap for my Tissot Gentleman. Hope the 20mm works ok on the 21mm lugs.
Stunning looking watch - could well be my next purchase now. Great video as always Adrian.
It really is a simplistic but beautiful piece. Nice review!
Great watch! I just bought the SBGN005 and I’m loving it. I may add the grey beast to my collection soon.
Adrian, another very nice review! The workaround is someone bringing you the watch fro the USA.
Love Grand Seiko, just bought the SBGV221. The gray dial on the 245 looks fantastic on that nato strap.
Soon as they pop a hi-beat or spring drive in that sucker, it'll get pretty popular. That case is awesome, and they lumed the markers which a lot of the other models don't have
Adrian you are the Casey Neistat of the RUclips watch world, the production level of this video is unbelievable. Congrats man!!
Thanks so much Matteo. 👍🏻
Thanks for reviewing it. It also caught my eye the first time I saw it. By then I had already been allocated one of the 60th anniversary SBGP015s which I have now got. Same case and terrific finish. The SBGV245 is available again from the Australian GS boutique too🙂
Another great video and talking about timing..... as blue is my favorite color and being on a hunt for my second GS, however first quartz (thanks to you), I was able to locate and order (yesterday) the SBGP015. Can’t wait to see it in person and looking forward to having it as my daily for a while!!!!
Spot on Adrian. I have one. (I have six GS watches) this one is way way the most impressive step step quartz movement available.
Love this watch. So much so that I picked one up last year. Always been intrigued by Grand Seiko. I actually saw this watch in a Hodinkee article and was shocked to find it was a Grand Seiko. Thought it may be a Piaget. Although it is still reserved, the colour choice is fantastic. Highly recommend.
I have the same watch for a year now, The watch I wear the most in my collection. Its quartz so it's grab and go, it's so accurate that when you change your time to day light saving time, it's not deviate a second since I synced it in time.gov six months ago.
I have had my eye on this model since the first time I saw it! It’s gorgeous!
I wish GS would mix up the treatment of the hands a little...always with the angular hands on more or less everything they put out. I get that its a GS trade mark, but it makes all of their watches feel very much the same. I feel this watch would look better with straight hands...I might do a mock up and see what everyone thinks
Thats exactly spot on. Their designs are boring and not creative. I just don't see the appeal. The only GS that are like are the $50K plus limited edition pieces such as 9R02. I just don't see why people love these things when even the Seikos cocktail time have more artistry. I dont see why people keep saying GS underrated. Movement isn't everything.
@@TheSkatereel You highlight the point nicely simply by saying "I don't see" or "I don't get" or "this other brand" and many, many people don't - that IS what makes it underrated. It's not until you have it on your wrist for some time does it all start to make sense. It certainly takes a leap of faith to choose it over a Rolex, but rarely do people report back saying they've made a mistake.
Do you feel the same about mercedes hands on all the Rolex? GS hands are the best in the buisness. Maybe GS just isn’t for you. Just a thought. Have a nice day 👍🏼
Martin Miksa, agreed. This is already part of GS identity. I don’t think it is related to lack of creativity at all.
The hands and markers are part of the 9 GS essential design elements harping all the way to the 60s. It wont change anytime soon, think Mercedes hands for Rolex.
Hi Adrian, fell in love with this watch after seeing your video, can image that you didn't go for this one, it fitted you so well. However purchased the last one in Europe and am over the moon with it. What a stunner, exactly as you described it, strap monster for the straps i purchased from you, keep up the good work, your my favourite RUclips watch reviewer.
I don't understand why some people dont like quartz. GS make pound for pound the best quartz watches out there. The build quality is incredible and the accuracy is amazing. I have owned the GS SBGN005 and have been enjoying every minute of it.
Eye catcher indeed. Love the color profile and what a fit when paired with the B&J nato. Starting my day off with some GS love. Cheers Adrian 🍻
The 4'oclock crown is BRILLIANT, SIR...
This watch always stops me too. It’s really well done. Very cool looking watch.
That slide at the beginning is a nice touch.
That is an absolutely stunning looking watch . Wow
No compromises: Go for the Citizen 0100 - most accurate watch - period. If budget is a constraint, the Longines VHP line is also a great (and much more affordable) alternative to a 9F.
Martin R. Krause Citizen chronomasters look interesting too. Citizen doesn’t get the love it deserves, and their quartz has solar so a 15 yr battery change not 3 yr.
I like to think that watch enthusiasts who don't like quartz just haven't seen or heard of Grand Seiko yet.
It certainly has presence and is beautiful. I love the craftsmanship that goes into creating the angles on the lugs which allows the light to bounce of it. It’s a strange one as I have tried on many beautiful GS watches but have never got that personal connection to actually buy one. My wife loves them so I might get her one instead. Hope you find the one you like Adrian.
This case design with automatic movement.Perfect!
Gorgeous, eye-catching GS. I had seen this on your wrist in a recent video and kept trying to pause the video to see what it was. Thanks!
Beautiful watch - love Grand Seiko - cheers mate !
Definitely plan to add a 9f piece to my collection. This one is stunning.
Wow I absolutely love this new GS. They have a bunch of great looking quartz models I just wish they were available in either a hi beat or spring drive movement.
I have had my eye on this one for quite a while now. Absolutely lovely review!
You should have a look at SBGX341 white dial or 343 black dial. These are JDMs but you can get them in the UK.
What an amazing editing ! Your channel is going better and better 💪🏻
Jr Lajarin thanks so much buddy. 🙌🏻
The intro. Spot on. I did the same looking on insta. Then I had to find the watch and more information on it. Really good looking watch and if you said you made the nato for that watch. I'd of believed you. Really nice combination. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻
Great video.Great watch. Great Content! You can really notice how you improve your videos with each upload.
Thanks a lot James for watching. And I’m glad you can see the improvements. 👍🏻
