      +FordTechMakuloco Variable valve timing is the instrument of the devil. No gain that I can see and when they fail there is MUCH PAIN. The last good engines Ford made was the small and big block overhead valve motors used in NASCAR. They now produce engines that you either cannot keep a spark plug in or cannot remove a spark plug from. This is progress?

      +Hawaiian F150 I agree, FTM is a class channel all the way! I wish I could find a channel of that quality for Mazdas, I'd be in heaven. lol

    • @hawaiianf1504
      @hawaiianf1504 8 лет назад +1

      +Baxrok2 -- oh man that would be good. I wish I knew of one too. Every car maker has or has had really great, really good, good, not so good and really bad vehicles in their lineups. No exceptions. Some only needed tweaks to get it better and some needed to be redesigned. Some never needed anything because they just were perfect out the gate. I think the greatest engine design that Mazda put forward for a production vehicle that the public could buy was the Wankel Rotary engine. I saw on TV that someone had that engine with a turbo going crazy fast down a 1/8 mile track. Unbelievable. I'm sure there are serious issues with any design especially when it is used for reasons and in applications other than it's intended deigns. Bbut whoa, solid sustained use at over 8000 rpm on a motor that has to have a wide variety of temperatures and pressure being applied to it. It's just wild.

    Eric, I was a MECHANICS counter parts man at the same chevy dealer for 34 years here in Phoenix. Have seen many ideas from GM come and go. Have seen many of those 2.8 engines run 300,000 and the only failure was the that cam actuator. I enjoyed all my years working with mechanics in our shop and seeing problems for myself and helping my friends solve the issues we ran across. WE had rows of parts books we had to know to look up parts the correct way. In the 80's and 90's , computers and the auto school TECHNICIANS started to show up. I liked the switch to computers, they made my job easier because I already knew the old way. I have mixed feelings about some of the uppity yuppity school trained technicians . Just because they can pass a written test does not make them a mechanic . The cars today are built for these people, they replace parts in assemblies. because they can't FIX anything. That engine you are working on was designed by people on computers that never saw under the hood of a car and wouldn't care to anyway. I guess I am a product of times gone by, but I knew from the first video I watched from you the you are a real mechanic with real values and honesty . I'm retired now but enjoy every one of your videos. Thank you for allowing us into you and your families lives. Oh, one side note. After a total of 42 in the auto industry working with GM, I will only own a Honda or Toyota ! I need the most value for my money😀. A lot of GM cars are designed with the mechanics in mind !!!!!! And they were pissed at you !!

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  8 лет назад +9

      +zonie1953 Haha thanks for the encouragement! I just try to do the best I can at what I do and looking up parts in books huh? Wow reminds me of going to NAPA when I was a kid before they had computers to look stuff up in.

    • @erickieffer8440
      @erickieffer8440 10 месяцев назад

      I would agree that older GM cars, not the front drive ones, were designed with the mechanic in mind, but this sort of lunacy seems to prove that they don’t want you fixing their cars anymore. I wish they still made the B-body cars, fuel economy be damned, I’d buy a few if I could.

      +South Main Auto Repair I am humbled that you like it. That is probably the best thing to hear. Just to know that it'll work for you is top of hill for me. I know how comfortable some tools can get and switching over can be hard sometimes. At least it can be for me sometimes. I'm glad you and really hope everyone else likes it. Thanks for the kind words from you and +Gary Louis . You really can't go wrong with the limited lifetime warranty too. Think its only $6 (covers return shipping back to you). Obviously they won't cover intentional misuse and abuse. My scraper is not a Super Scraper and am thinking the company is long gone. Believe mine was made from the 1940's to 1980's and am sure its now long gone. I know mine is over 35 years old, maybe even 40. Got two of them in early 1970's. Mine is about 10 inches long with another 4 inches for the long wooden handle. I do keep the tip covered (a small folded over piece of rubber gasket material acting like a sleeve to protect the carbide and that end is covered with an old Crown Royal Bag ;) when its in my tool box. I think I showed you a pix of mine. The old wooden file type handle fits the hand real sure like. I gave my son it's twin brother a few years ago. Both are still in great shape even with all the use they've seen. And man I tell you straight up, they sure been used a lot over the years. Still have a really sharp and straight edges.Think that for one of them I originally used a folded over and duct taped piece of cardboard. Sometimes I've been known to toss in a wrench or two into the toolbox. I did that once and saw the scraper jump over to the back of the toolbox and I was "Yikes - DagNabIt!". It just didn't feel there was enough crush protection so I covered it too with a rubber sleeve like mine.

    I've used the SuperScraper for years but the 2" version and for a completely different purpose. Here in the Southwest the UV eats the paint off of car hoods, roofs, and truck lids. I use the SuperScraper to scrape off most of the damaged paint from the car prior to going to sandpaper to finish the job of preparing the car for repaint. Saves a lot of time and sandpaper. I actually sent mine back once for resharpening and true to their word they did it for free and the scrapper was as good as new when it came back. Fantastic customer service.The best place to buy these is Carbide Processors. I've used these guys for years for saw blades and router bits for my woodworking business. Good outfit.

    I am not a professional mechanic nor will I ever own a Colorado, but for some reason I have watched every minute of every video on this project. I just like hanging out because your commentaries make me feel like I'm there and have a part in the outcome. Weird right? I have many interests and DIY videos are just one of them but this has become my favorite channel. Great Job Eric, on all fronts.

      +J BONE I would tone it down a little bit. You are mixing getting a car back on the road as a welfare job with a paid 4-digit $$$$ job. I don't agree with Erics welded-in Ball-joint either.
      But anyway, calling him a hack on the internet is very very easy, I would like to see you lying on the ground in the cold building your own business and helping people out with their car problems. You are most certainly no match to his endurance and professionalism. And everybody makes mistakes, but that doesn't render everything else they've done useless or a 'hack'.
      We are not calling Eric O. a hack either because he doesn't open the bleeder when pushing in caliper pistons. Your so called EricTheHackGuy is the only one on automotive RUclips who does promote this method and actually he is right.
      And let me tell you to broaden the picture: Here in Germany NOT A SINGLE ONE of these cars would still be on the road because of safety regulations. So don't get to exited about a frickin ball-joint. Makes me laugh.

      +Markus Krause I understand what your saying. But we all have opinions and maybe I should of left out info about ETCG on here and posted it on ETCG site. I like ETCG but lately he seems to have a oh well attitude lately. Something I wasn't expecting coming out of ETCG mouth. I do appreciate all of what he has done to date but not everything is always a positive reply after all. Have a good day. Jay

    • @baxrok2.
      @baxrok2. 8 лет назад +2

      +J BONE I agree with you about ETCG. He and his channel has changed. Lately, he most definitely has a "oh well attitude" and it's so noticeable that many are talking about it. While fixing peoples cars for free is truly great it's clear that he just doesn't love it anymore. As evidence, he is no longer in the repair business.

    • @hawaiianf1504
      @hawaiianf1504 8 лет назад +2

      +J BONE -- Hope that I remember how many times I have made a mistake. That the good Lord will allow me the ability to see each mistake I made and for it to make me a better person, father, grandfather and wannabe mechanic. Hardest thing for me is remembering not to re-do the same brain-fart thing over again. Yup - that's one of the many problems with me - and the older I get the shorter my memory and other body parts get. For sure, it'll happen to all of us. Eric, from EricTheCarGuy has done many, many outstanding videos long before most others and Eric has helped so many more people than most realize.

    Amazing series Eric. It has been educational, interesting, suspenseful, and flat out a ton of fun to watch! I did away with cable a year ago and watching a series like this is better than any of the garbage showing on the boob tube. You're an amazing teacher, mechanic/technician, outstanding video maker, and one hell of a great guy.
    I think you summed it all up when, at the beginning, you said, "everything's got to be perfect." I have a 2010 Honda Accord which exhibits VTC Actuator rattle intermittently on startup. This series has helped me understand what is likely going on (loose lock pin not engaging on shutdown leading to loose actuator driven by cam lobes on startup). Fortunately replacing the VTC actuator is much easier on Accord K24 engine. Very educational. Great video. Regards

    Very patient and professional. Appreciate your devotion and time to increase productivity. My you enjoy a prosperous and blessed life.
    Corpus Christi Jeep failed to diagnose a slipped chain on a well maintained, 140,000 mile Grand Cherokee. A defect in material choice by engineers, that let the engine immediately run out of time. The Jeep mechanics were still totally puzzled after $100 diagnostic.
    The chain slipped one more tooth while moving the vehicle. It progressed to instant valve-piston contact, which then resulted in a new engine replacement required.
    The original problem was a broken nylon timing chain tensioner, that if properly diagnosed on first tooth jump, would have been far easier and cheaper to fix.
    Thank you for a four letter expletive free, instructional video. I immediately close those vids after the first F bomb, and search for others more family friendly. Thank you again.

    Yeah determining TDC on these Atlas engines can be a pain as there are no external marks to indicate it. That's why GM came up with the J-44221 cam holding tool. Luckily it's only 12-13 bucks and not stupidly priced as most of their specialty tools are. Another great video series as always Eric!

    I read through some of the comments. Then it occurred to me...from the math lesson in part 1 and the scanner reading, well i bet that actuator (phaser) is what made the numbers come back to 2 when you would command it to move. The computer saw the issue and showed we just didn't see it maybe. Im sure you thought of this as well. Top notch work.
    I have come to enjoy watching yourself as well as rainman ray.

      +South Main Auto Repair Yep, Amazon, eBay, and Direct traffic has all exploded since this morning! I am familiar with the offering Lisle is still in development on, but they're not in production yet... All 3 models of the SuperScraper are still being made with the original manufacturer, Innovative Tools in Cedar Rapids, IA. They are also the folks behind the lifetime warranty and re-sharpen commitment. ToolCrate USA is currently only distributing Super Scrapers after learning Innovative Tools didn't really sell them individually. Does your shop have a 2.5" wide yet?

    I'd have to agree this is a cumulative effect, each worn piece in the chain adds more slack to the timing events. Looks like you could become a dealer for those scrapers, might want to order some to put in your store - not sure how that works, whatever. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to make these videos, it can't be easy juggling all your other work and still taking time to play cameras and editing. Interesting observations: Why didn't the chain guides come as a *SET?* (who would STUPIDLY only replace 1?) Did you have to replace those black plastic bolt spacers- or did you reuse them? What is their purpose? You didn't show the tightening of the long rack through bolt/nut (I assume you did) before/after installing the cross member. It was amazing and very telling- how much you had to rotate the cams to get the new parts to align; the factors of: stretched chain, worn guides, and loose actuator all contributed to a *HUGE* amount of slop in the timing! With engines like this- the days of using a timing light are about over, unless you fluorescent marker the crank pulley, and a mark on the block for TDC and watch them. Most early *EARLY* GM were 8'-11' BTDC for _ignition_.

    Hey Eric. Been watching this series from the beginning and I think you have done an excellent job so far. I also think your fault code is repaired. These videos show people what BS we have to go through to repair vehicles sometimes. That job is a lot of work. Only thing I might have done differently is replace the intake cam gear and crank gear as well as prime the oil pump.The amount of crankshaft rotation while the piston is at TDC is called neutral dwell. That's all I can remember from my brain archives but I believe the number of crankshaft degrees is the same from engine to engine.

    • @hawaiianf1504
      @hawaiianf1504 8 лет назад +1

      +wysetech2000 -- Do you think the teeth on the intake cam and crank are worn enough to warrant replacement or is replacement recommended only because it is an easy thing to do at that stage of the repair procedure?

    • @satamanschmidt3428
      @satamanschmidt3428 8 лет назад +1

      +Hawaiian F150 I think the cam adjuster was 100% of the problem. As soon as I saw the chain there simply was not enough slack in it to warrant the code. Considering the mileage and the amount of work needed to get to this point there was little to be gained by not changing the chain and associated parts that Eric did. $400.00 in parts to prevent a redo down the road was a logical choice. That stated out here a $2,000 repair like this makes a hell of a lot of sense since there would be no reason the truck could not last another ten years with these repairs, back there the rust will kill it long before these parts fail again. Sort of an interesting situation.

    • @wysetech2000
      @wysetech2000 8 лет назад +1

      +Hawaiian F150 When I replace the timing chain on anything I always replace all of the components. Only Eric could inspect the remaining gears for wear even though his cam is great.

    • @hawaiianf1504
      @hawaiianf1504 8 лет назад +2

      +wysetech2000, +SATAMAN Schmidt -- being a lowly armchair DIY auto mechanic that I am, I don't have the experience y'all have. With the video information that we have I would definitely change the chain, the guides and the actuator any and all seals, gaskets, O-ring's and only fasteners that were worn and/or needed changing. I looked at the other gears on the big TV and from what I saw - I didn't see any rolled edges or cam or teeth deformities. Doesn't mean there is any but I wasn't there and didn't them buggas's in my hands either. After not seeing much wear on the other cam's and crank gear teeth - I probably would change them only if the budget allowed it and only if the owner agreed to cover the cost. If you do that where does a reasonable person stop? Why not do the bearings and send the block out for some valve machining or truing the head surfaces just to make it all new, right and tight. Reasonable Fair Cost is such a big part of a real and fair mechanics vocabulary. At least it is for Top Flight Mechanics like Eric. And I agree to what wysetech2000 correctly eluded to "Only Eric could do the inspection" - he did it and he called it. His decisions are engrained in his moral character and besides, that's name on that motor. The gears weren't worn enough to warrant replacement.

    • @hawaiianf1504
      @hawaiianf1504 8 лет назад +1

      +Hawaiian F150 Dang - sure would like an "EDIT" button. ** .. besides that's Eric's name on that motor"...

    Thanks Eric,
    Your video is very detail.
    When I check the movement of your Cam actuator, it looks like it turns about 9 degree -- which equals to your calculated delta cam-crank pattern angle.
    So I suspect all your gain from the entire fix comes from the single part - cam actuator.

It tuned out the bolt holes were not blind holes and since I thought is was a bad idea to have the bolts exposed to the water jacket. I went ahead and put some of that white Permatex Teflon sealer on the bolts. I thought about how it would change the torque but did it anyway. So far so good. Just wonder if you or anyone else has any thought about using this sealer instead of doing it dry?

    The first head of GM Engineering was a man named Boss Kettering. He was the inventor of the points and condenser ignition and the electric starter. He was also the founder of Delco. He made a statement which to this day hangs in the lobby of the GM engineering building which is: "Parts left out cost nothing and cause no maintenance issues." That's about how I feel about variable valve timing. FTM has about 10 videos on the problems these cause on Ford vehicles. VVT is a worthless "improvement". I'll never have to worry about a phaser problem on my 3800. It doesn't have one. The more crap you put into an engine the more problems you'll have with it. Simplicity rules.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 8 лет назад +2

      +SATAMAN Schmidt That was my line of thought too. What is VVT supposed to improve, anyways? Torque, emissions, gas mileage? But with a giant repair bill here in the $1k-2k range, all those "savings" over the life of the vehicle go right out the window, and then some.
      Just had the pleasure of driving a 1992 Olds Cutlass Ciera with the 3.3L V6. Mountains of torque, smooth as butter. But still had hand crank windows and no cruise control! Beautifully simple and sweet. Almost felt like a caveman driving that thing around lol :)

    • @Discretesignals

    I live and work right down the road in Cedar Rapids, IA from Innovative Tools that produce those scrapers. If you order from them though they want you to buy a dozen at a time and you have to become a dealer. If you only want one scraper then you have to look elsewhere. I wonder if they could get me a deal locally and tell them that their product is in demand?

    I wonder if there’s a locked cam sprocket, meaning no variable cam timing, available for engines so as to avoid these problems which I see with so many variable valve timing engines? I’m sure it would also involve some sort of computer reprogramming as well.
