May 5, 1945 You’re on the battlefield of Okinawa. You’re huddled down in a trench with your battalion and commanders. You’re waiting under the dim, foggy skies, and preparing for the enemy to push forward towards your trench. Then, while everything is still quiet….you and your squad mates hear a faint whistle, and see a hooded figure on the hill off a bit in the distance.
This whistle perfectly describe death. It's far and close, disturbing and chilling, mocking and comforting at the same time. He didn't segregate people, everyone is valuable to him equally. If make peace with him, he is friendly, just a tool to escort to somewhere better. If you afraid of him he is ruthless and merciless who want to take you to nowhere.
Thats the thing. He is really just doing his job. His last line in the movie, "enjoy your life puss" shows that he isnt sadistic or a psychopath. It shows that he was frustrated with how Puss never valued or cared for his other lives, and now he doesnt feel the need to kill Puss himself because Puss showed 2 things. 1. That he takes death seriously and from now on will enjoy his life and 2. That he faced his fear of death, and has come to terms with the fact that he is mortal andnwont live forever. I wish people wouldnt see Death as a bad thing, nor see him as a good thing. He is a natural, neutral thing just as life is. Even in this movie, he was only, well, *scary* until Puss finally accepted the reality of him. When Puss looked him straight in the eye at the end of that final battle, Death really didnt seem so scary anymore. To both Puss *and* the audience, he suddenly became a lot less frightening. Its really about how you see Death that decides whether or not you greatly fear him. Its only when you accept that youll see him on your last day is when he doesnt seem so bad.

Fun Fact: In a musical standpoint, this melody have only 8 musical notes and 9th at the end, this represents the 8 lives of Puss and the one he’s living now. Another fun fact: the fact this sounds eerie it’s because of the last note that is being played, this in a musical key is the 7th note, it got a distance of a half a tone between the first note played, thats why your ear wants to complete it but it was left “unresolved”, until the second time around, it does “resolve” . So genius the musical team in this movie! It’s incredibly creative!
What makes Death one of the best villains is that ,unlike other goofy ahh villains, he actually brought a drastic change in the state of mind of Puss. Bruh a kid screamed at my theater when death actually revealed he was death like when he burst through that glass tbh I almost screamed that was creepy asl
The fun thing is that this song is in a major (a.k.a. the "light/uplifting") key, unlike many other songs about/related to death which are usually in a minor (a.k.a. "grounded/depressed") key. The first iteration of the song is also composed from eight notes, but the second iteration, which is only whistled after the final battle, is composed from nine notes. It's pretty simple to see the meaning behind that, IMO.
The second iteration is the answer to the first melody, and melodically resolves it, which fits as it ends Death and Puss's conflict throughout the film
I LOVE this for Death's theme because it can be heard in different ways. For quite a few, it's probably very unsettling. There's nothing that accompanies the melody and it's very simple in the way that it presents itself. But it's that very simplicity that makes it off-putting, even scary. But to others, it might be soothing, comforting, like all the worries that you once had can finally begin to drift away. If Death itself were to have a theme, THIS would be it...
@@CowboyProductions19 I'm not saying you should seek out death, live for as long as you can and live your life to your fullest. But when your time comes and there's nothing more you can do to prevent it, welcome it. Death will either hold your hand and escort you to whatever comes next or it will DRAG you down with all the force needed. Make your choice.
I think the producers also said that it couldn't be Death playing an instrument for his theme because instruments are man-made. Death is something beyond man's grasp, untamed.
One thing I find especially dark about this tone is the sarcastic cheer to it. Death has clearly made this little tune specifically for Puss judging by the 8/9 notes. The whistle has a heroic attribute to it almost, but it has this sardonic “oh well” to it, like “remember the hero, now he’s gone forever”. The tragic little tale of a plucky hero, echoing in the infinite. It’s perfect.
You are completely right, i listened to it again after reading this comment and I see what you mean. It's like a song played at a known heros funeral, it celebrates their time alive whilst letting you also know they are dead and never coming back. -like a song that is now legend.
The tune is actually from Shrek 2, the scene where Shrek and Donkey meet Puss, and he does the cute eyes; this tune plays in that part. Death's whistle is a variant of the tune however, so they won't sound exactly the same.
And as Death bows out, he whistles the tune again, but it's more upbeat. He's basically saying, "All right, you earned my respect. Live your last life to the fullest, and I'll see you when it ends."
I went to the cinema with my kid brother to see this film and seeing the scene where death meets puss for the first time, I remember how quiet it was at the cinema and how the whistle echoed everywhere and I got the chills just hearing, after that every time death appeared I could hear people saying "oh god he's back" which means this character gave chills to everyone and they really succeeded at making a memorable villan, well done dreamworks!!

But yeah, Dreamworks is the goat for making this movie. Big W.
It’s really impressive that a villain that has to share a movie with atleast 2 to 5 other villains (depending on how you count the Governor and Goldilock’s crime family) and has the LEAST screentime out of them all And yet still manages to be standing out on his own
Honestly, none of the "villains" were really villains, aside from Jack Horner. Goldie just wanted a human family, and the governor was just to set exposition for the story itself in reality. And Death was antagonistic towards Puss simply because he didn't value any of his lives, until his last, and he was tired of chasing him life after life. Though I agree, it is a shame he didn't get much screen time. However, I also think that makes the character all the more menacing.
I'm fricking surprised you don't have thousands of likes by now. Like, you're more true with this than many people would realise. Personally, I agree with you from the viewpoint that when death growled into Pusse's face before he left, I would've said to him: "I fear you to reach me in my close future, but I can't live without you." For me, it's freedom to know that I won't be "trapped" into my life forever. For me, it's a freeing thought to know that one day I'll be free too, just like everybody else. In your deathbed when all your senses are lost except your hearing, then you start to hear this melody. You think you could move, yet you couldn't. While Death is represented in images you once knew, this time it's nothing compared to what you've ever seen in life. There's just this darkness, chilling presence, and unnerving weight that looms around you. Not clearly in front of you, but it's there... Not a shadowy figure, but a space of nothingness that has identity to it.

Whats interesting is that this whistle sounds nostalgic, comforting in a way. When you're ready to go, your hearing is the last sense to go. Your mind conjures up a song that is the metaphor of everything you cherished in your life, whether it be a single tune, your favourite song, or something completely new and different. Similarly to dementia, when you're just about to die, you suddenly remember everything, and you become completely aware. This was represented in the last song you hear before the silence of death in The Caretaker: Everywhere at the End of Time. You hear the song clearly, and it sounds beautiful. The creepy part? It only sounds chilling and wicked when you fear death, instead of embracing it as your final destination. Death cannot be stopped, so live your life to the fullest, and be truly happy. If you've spent life well, death will be warm and gentle, tragic or not.
I love how the whistle kind of sounds incomplete… like something else should come after that last note but it just ends right there like THIS MOVIE WAS INSANE BRAH
i think it's his song from shrek 2. Puss in boots melody but without a few notes, I heard someone say that in a forum somewhere, haven't searched it yet, but it's pretty cool. It's like the Wolf is mocking him
It's because the melody ends without a resolution and we can feel that something is missing, even if we can't explain it (at least I think that's how music theory works)
This is probably the last thing farquad, the fairy godmother, and basically every character that died in the Shrek universe heard

If make peace with him, he is friendly, just a tool to escort to somewhere better. If you afraid of him he is ruthless and merciless who want to take you to nowhere.
There's always a "where" on the afterlife.
truer words

POV: you get a little too angry at the game at 3am and you hear dads snoring stop
Nah I’m cooked
The fun thing is that this song is in a major (a.k.a. the "light/uplifting") key, unlike many other songs about/related to death which are usually in a minor (a.k.a. "grounded/depressed") key.
The first iteration of the song is also composed from eight notes, but the second iteration, which is only whistled after the final battle, is composed from nine notes. It's pretty simple to see the meaning behind that, IMO.
The second iteration is the answer to the first melody, and melodically resolves it, which fits as it ends Death and Puss's conflict throughout the film
its the nursery rhyme 3 little kittens
its in G major for most of the movie, but A major at the very end
I remember a comment mentioning that Death's whistle is the tune that puss has when he did those eyes in Shrek 2
8 notes, representing the 8 lives puss wasted😨
I LOVE this for Death's theme because it can be heard in different ways. For quite a few, it's probably very unsettling. There's nothing that accompanies the melody and it's very simple in the way that it presents itself. But it's that very simplicity that makes it off-putting, even scary. But to others, it might be soothing, comforting, like all the worries that you once had can finally begin to drift away.
If Death itself were to have a theme, THIS would be it...
So true, some people are afraid of death, some just embrace it. Damn u made a good point right there bro 😄
Its really calming and I actually like listening to it and all my worries drift away
Wow you're so right, what a cool little detail.
I put this on loop while om on the toilet so I can shit myself and get rid of the constipation
You too? That’s me rn after the pizza 😂

3 days ago, I was in school and I was in the bathroom. As I came out, I heard a whistle in the middle of nowhere and I almost jumped out of my skin. A while back, I played a prank in the cafeteria where I put the whistle on full volume. Some people jumped and one dude began to swear. That was pretty funny. It’s really impressive that a villain that has to share a movie with atleast 2 to 5 other villains (depending on how you count the Governor and Goldilock’s crime family) and has the LEAST screentime out of them all
And yet still manages to be standing out on his own
Honestly, none of the "villains" were really villains, aside from Jack Horner.
Imagine, you’re on your deathbed with your loved ones and suddenly, you hear a whistle tune, and a shadowy figure emerges from the shadows.
Death: ready to go

It is for us to approach him slowly.
I'm fricking surprised you don't have thousands of likes by now.
Like, you're more true with this than many people would realise.
Personally, I agree with you from the viewpoint that when death growled into Pusse's face before he left, I would've said to him: "I fear you to reach me in my close future, but I can't live without you."
For me, it's freedom to know that I won't be "trapped" into my life forever. For me, it's a freeing thought to know that one day I'll be free too, just like everybody else. I've lived my life, and experienced it. I don't want to die, but I'll be glad to receive it at the end.
Just not early.
Death sure made one hell of a Wiseman Sandwich, that's for sure.

Whatmore, he only appears when Puss is in a possibly deadly situation, meaning Puss himself gets closer and closer to Death
Imagine, you're in the hospital at the edge of death, with nobody with you and nobody to comfort you, then you suddenly hear this whistle.

Idk, I feel like, while some would say it would be scary and frightening, I think that hearing it would bring acceptance and comfort. At your final moments, someone IS there with you and specifically for you. Your time is up, sure. But you aren't alone. It's the guiding hand to the next stage, wherever that is.

This is a beautiful sound.
