When medical treatment becomes too expensive for a cat, sometimes we need to surrender them to the city to give the cat a fighting chance. The city treats the cats, puts them up for adoption, and if the cat is not adopted returns them to the the same neighborhood which they were picked up from.
    The disadvantages of this are:
    1. You have no say in what if any care the cat receives.
    2. Sometimes the city leaves the cats in the wrong neighborhood.
    3. Cats under one year old cannot be left in the same neighborhood because they do not put chips in them.
    4. When you call the city, you need to set aside an entire 1 or 2 days. They may arrive in 15 minutes or 48 hours later. This means you need to have the cat near you or in a cage that entire time. You need to be paying attention to your phone and ready to meet them at any moment.
The Pandas caught a contagious disease that turned their mouths, skin, eyes, claws and teeth yellow. 2 veterinarians told me they weren't even equipped the treat the disease. The 3rd, most expensive veterinarian told me that it could be treated, but including housing I was looking at $700-$1000 per cat. That is, if the disease was even treatable. I would need to pay up front to find out.
I surrendered the Panda twin kittens to the city knowing I would never see them again. We had raised them since birth. I was very close to them, but I simply did not have the money. The disease had already spread to a 3rd cat, and to save the entire community I had to act fast.
The city called me, told me that the kittens were well, and that they were returning them to me. This felt like an incredible blessing. You just never know in Turkey. They say, "this is the policy" then sometimes they surprise you. Now we need to get them neutered and vaccinated.
