THis is me detailed review of the Asus N551JK (part of the Asus N551 series), a 15 inch multimedia laptop with a matte display and powerful hardware.
The Asus N551 is an updated version of the Asus N550 launched last year and fixes some of its issues with a new cooling solution, a removable battery and easier access to the hardware inside.

I just bought one (Asus N551-JM) with an Core i7-4710HQ,8Gb dd3, GTX860. Put in there Samsung 840 120 GB EVO SSD, and the laptop kicks ass. Slight overclock on the GPU (boost around 1230 mhz) and it chews games on FHD resolution... Very good piece of hardware, recommendation!

Josip Brdarević Hey, I'm just doing some research on this laptop, so far it seems like it's great and all, but I'm concerned about the temperatures in modern games. Could you share your experience? Is it cool enough? Do you epxerience any stuttering in games due to high temps?

CPU gets to 82-85 *C, GPU is a bit cooler than that. Doesn't get too loud and I didn't notice any thermal throttle.
Recommended! It's a great machine, work/gaming station. GTX 860M is pretty OCable too.

I'm looking to buy an ASUS N551JQ which I am hoping is similar and everything said in this review seems promising until you got to the WiFi. Currently the sale for one of the laptops include an Intel Wireless-AC 7260 802.11 ac/a/b/g/n 2x2 wireless card. Is this better than the one you used for the video? Please advise. Thanks

I gotta give it to the marketing and design departments for minimising the thickness of these beasts! When I first saw print ads for this ages ago I was so impressed with how svelte it looked, but now I know it was all curves and angles😂

Hi, can you help me choose between N551JK-198H and N551JX-CN068H? The IPS panel is important and I can't get reliable info of whether both models have it or just JX. Which one would you recommend? Also, do you know if both have matte screen?

This is the best keyboard I've ever typed on. And i tried Mac's and other stuff. At least best for me.
I would kill the designer that put the power button among the regular keyboard buttons. Couldn't they think it would cause accidental shut downs?....this is the only thing that keeps me from buying the laptop...and I need one. Is there no other way to turn the laptop on or off?
Well I'm pretty sure that like most other laptops, simply pressing the power key will only put into sleep mode, whereas to turn it off, you must hold down the key for several seconds, but I've heard that shutting a computer off in this method can cause problems somehow, so it is recommended that you turn off the laptop by using the startup/shutdown commands in the start menu. Honestly I think you are overreacting about this, as there being a power key is pretty much standard on most laptops that I've seen, and I do not see why this small feature would make or break this laptop.
I have this computer, one of the problmes is the transition from conected to direct power and the use only od the battery, the problem is when is only using battery the dark images gets darker, as an intention for save battery, the fact is when i return it to normal power of the charger still the same with dark images and the graphics start to make trouble and sames like the color is over brigh but ugly. If any of you guys knows the reasons i'll be grateful.

Planning on getting this laptop, (N551JK-DH71 model), is the wifi card still an issue? And if so, will one of those USB dongles help with that? Also, is the noise it makes constant, and/or loud enough to distinctly be heard in a classroom scenario?

The wifi is a bit annoying. It's my only complaint about this laptop. But if you are sitting close to your router, I can't think you would have any issues.
I haven't heard any noise from this thing yet other than when running it hard with gaming. It's whisper quiet most of the time. Had this one for 10 months now.
Hi, I plan to buy this laptop. Do you know whether the OS is stored on the motherboard? I want to change the HDD for SSD so I hope BIOS will pick it up.
have you tried the asus N-552. Is the screen flimsy on the N551. Is the built quality better or worse as the n53sv

I only see few differences in RAM 16 to 12 and on screen 17.3 for 15.6...~
And i would like to use then on games, like GTA V, DayZ etc.. Editing like Photoshop After effects... Use for record my Music with my guitar... Make videos for youtube, work, maybe stream, that type of stuff...

One suggestion,is it too hard for u to edit in the sound quality with subwoofer attached.i simply cant imagine on my mind on what u describe. And temp test on plam rest too on load and idle. And can u do a review of clevo w355ssq
It looks like n56 with bigger hinges ... Sure the processor, ram, etc are different but it seems like there is no improvement from n550

If there is not a big price difference, then get the G version. Im getting n551jm becouse its 240€ cheaper than the G version
That keyboard is lousy... Why did they have to do that to the ENTER key?
Is the top part of the notebook really, really made out of aluminium or is just a very good imitation?
I personally think the n551 is uglier than the n550, luckily the n550 is still being made, since versions with the latest hardware are available on amazon.
GadgetJM it's possible plug in an external microphone with jack?
PC&Games it only has one combo jack, so you'll need a splitter for that

protip: if your laptop shuts down after exactly 4:30 minutes and you don't know why don't send it to asus instead go into your bios settings and on the security tab make sure the secure boot keys are set to installed

Should i get this for 970 € or or the same model but the G series one (G551JM) which has 2 fans instead of 1 fan, and it would cost 1210€, is the +1 fan worth the extra 240€....??? i think it really isn't... + the N551JM looks better, i don't like the "gaming look". I would use the laptop for gaming (cs go, tf2, lol, data) and school
Velcuz for €970 you should get a lenovo ideapad y50. most shops sell the N551 for about €880. But to answer your question: yes the extra fan and exhaust are worth it. It's not about the extra fan, it's about the advanced cooling design. also the G551 uses an ssd which will hugely improve performance. Also it has a better gpu.

Velcuz well the top level ones do, but the entry level N551 JM is lower specced. The shop you're looking is quite weird in their pricing that they make the price gap so big. If you like the design of the N551 better I would chose that one.
But seriously, look at the lenovo ideapad y50, it destroys both of them.

Good laptop, but unnecessary when the N550JK is available. I even think that the N550JK is better in some points than this one.

It won't be unnecessary. The two laptops differ 300 euros in price; the N550JK falls in another price class. The N551JK is pretty cheap for its performance.

Isn't the cooling on the N551 much better. I have the N750JK and it has the same cooling system as the N550 I think and the cooling is the only thing I am realy not happy about. Too noisy and it becomes realy hot at the top of the laptop when I am playing games.
do you lose warranty when you customly insert an ssd?

hi i bought this laptop Asus N551zu amd version , and the hard drive is making noisy sound , like example clicking buzzing and grinding, is it normal for this laptop like you said ? i open any file without lagging or slow,so i dont think the hard drive is dying or am i wrong? please somebody answer me =(
sonicblast79 i am 99.99...5 sure you have an Western Digital Hdd rofl .... only hdd witch ppl need to use with loud music .... :)))))))))))) i am 2nd WD hdd owner brand new and after a week they start being noisy
so is that a bad hdd? this so anoying, i can hear it pretty clear.
and one more question , the laptop when im gaming it heat to around 90 celcius , can it damage my laptop with the processor max temperature 105 celcius?
first is not bad hdd just not defraged in off ... and 90 c to processor in gaming is normal if you have 30 C in room i think ... try to lift it up the laptop maybe you get a cooler temps ...sometimes is working
so it wont damage the motherboard or other components right? with such kind of heat lol

Using this rig (N551JM) I can tell some really bad things about it.
* First mine is a TN panel version, its bad. Its brightness is really low
* The keyboard feels something like a dry raw ceramic thing
* The combo jack is NOT working (bought splitters, driver updates) nothing works
* Why do i need combo? Because its microphone quality SUCKS, never seen anything what was so bad like this.
* Its wifi sucks, as a lots reviews mentioned, its range is low and sometimes (many times) it just randomly disconnects
+++ For 3months i have never used the keyboard backlit (I am a fan of backlit keybards since i have logitech g15) , you will never use the subwoofer.. makes no sense.
**** Except from these things I still like this rig, its fast and looks good. bud thats it. I use it for working mainly. But games will not cause a probem for it.

tuphier Its not bright enough for me. On pictures it looks good, From above, it also looks good but when you look on it from ca 45° angle you can see the light under the keys... and actually brighter than the keys itself. Hehe.
oh ok. i dont need to look at keys when typing anyway. but it really looks awesome to me so ill leave it on XD. im not buying this anyway, im looking at other asus models but same keyboard features.
tuphier I understand. Yeah I also never look at keyb while typing but on fn functions or any special stuff needed, it would look good. Btw White backlit is epic. I like it. but not useful... I can see keys better when i turn it off

GadgetJM I also am a proud owner of this laptop. Recenlty I replaced my DVD-Rom drive with a SSD-Drive. I created a video of the difference between those. Would be nice if you checked it out!

OscarTalks Good for video editing, a little slow when it comes to rendering. But it isn't terrible.
my laptop is N551ZE,the specs is AMD FX Radeon R7,4Gb ram,it stated on the laptop that it has the R9 M280X 2GB GPU but when i try to do benchmark test,it doesn't detect the R9 even using the AMD Catalyst to detect it.can someone help me????
