Did This Experiment Work or Did They Get Confused? (This is a Big Deal For Us)

  • In this video, we investigate an interesting question: if we move a egg mobile, and do not lock the hens up for a few days, will the chickens still go up to their coop at night, or do they get confused and sleep somewhere else? Let's find out.

I predict the layer hens will have no problem going to roost in their structure. They should home in to their roosts, not just the plot of land they are on. At least that has been my experience.
Roomba is still my favorite of your chickens. I love her independence and her resourcefulness. She's a good Mamma and always making sure she knows what all is going on. I submit to you that she is one of Sheriff Nugget's undercover officers. Yup, I'm pretty sure Roomba is tasked with checking out the goings-on and reporting back to base.
One tip for you I thought of: Don't feed the hens scratch or whole grains on the ground the day before you plan to move them. If they don't get all of it, some will probably sprout and be weeds you have to pull later. If that is going to be an issue anyway. If you are going to till that plot or not plant it, it won't matter. Just something I learned from having mobile chickens.
Holly is such a good dog! She breaks my heart a little because she reminds me so strongly of my old boy Rex. They don't look anything similar, because Rex was a rough collie (looked like Lassie), but the way Holly acts and tilts her head, always so attentive to you, Jason, and the way she plays and moves. All remind me of Rex so much! Lost Rex to old age over 20 years ago and I still get misty when I think of him. Still miss him a lot. Some dogs are those once-in-a-lifetime companions. Rex was mine. Holly looks to be yours. Such a blessing.

I hope some of the people that the generous woman gave daffodils to gave her a few of their plants or other things she might want or be able to use that they have an abundance of. In the part of Virgina where my mom lives people often exchange plants and seeds from their plants. It's nice to walk through mom's yard and have her tell me who had originally given her which plant. It makes the plants more special.

I read that in general, chickens don't wander farther than they can still see their "home" aka coop. That's about 100 yards. I don't think you moved it far enough for them to feel disoriented. They can still see your house and all the other animals around them and of course they'll recognize the bus :) I think keeping them cooped up overnight or two is probably useful when they have to move to a whole new property miles away or to a brand new coop.

Wish l had a farm, have a double lot in the City and am going to have a garden an build a cool, fresh eggs are so so much better then store bought, as a kid, we went to my uncle and aunts house and head for the barn, so l will have my own little garden. My own chickens and fresh eggs, years ago my dad super cleaned our garage, and brought the beef home to age, made our own hamburger, steaks etc. So much more flavor and we knew what was in our own burgers, steaks, chickens and learned from my mom, how to can, freeze, and use almost every piece of our cow and pig, taste is so so fresh, love you all, after our first dog died, from lymphoma, he passed peacefully at the age of 16, miss him and my parents, my Dad taught me a lot about cars and maintenence, between my parents, who are gone now and miss them everyday, so remembrance of my mom and dad and you all , are making me such a better person, keep on dancing Jason, that really brightens my day and gives me the strength to build what l can, in the City..

What is everyone's favorite part of their farm? I think if I lived there, I would set up a lawn chair in the espalier tree orchard when they bloom and read a book there.
