Is The Nikon F100 The Best Cheap Film Camera?

  • In 1999 Nikon released the Nikon F100 as a slightly downgraded version of the Nikon F5, its flagship 35mm film camera at the time. Online the Nikon F100 has been labeled a cheaper, AA battery powered Nikon F6. What does that mean? It means that the Nikon F100 works very much like a modern digital camera, with many of the same features. The Nikon F100 has auto focus, aperture and shutter priority modes. It also has a fully automatic program mode for those who do not want to deal with any part of the exposure triangle. All you need to do is load the film, point the camera, and push the shutter button. With that in mind, I would say the Nikon F100 is the perfect starting point for anyone looking to get into film photography. The optional battery grip augments the Nikon F100's capabilities even further by allowing its motor drive to take 5 photos per second. The Nikon F100 is an amazing camera from the final years of film photography's dominance.

You really don't have to swap out the batteries that often. The only thing I wish the F100 had is 100% viewfinder coverage (I think it is like 95%). Thing is solid in my hands. I mainly use the 35mm 1.4G (beast of a lens) or a older 50mm 1.8 AIS pancake. Results are amazing. Only a F6 would be better. I also love my Leica M3 but a really really different experience.

I need to get more lenses for the F100. I do have the 50mm you mentioned, it looks almost like there is no lens when attached. As for the M3, that's a nice camera. I have not ventured into the world of rangefinders yet, but I do have one I will be trying out in the future.

@@AmericanExpatDaily you just need one or two solid lenses for that F100. I have a bunch of Nikkor glass because I been shooting Nikon DSLRs for about twenty years now. With film I find it that it best to just have a solid lens and learn it. I hardly ever take that 35 off the F100 unless I put it on my D750 (which is also a great camera). The M3 is great and I got that in a trade for a Fuji X-T2 (I like to say it found me). The experience is a lot different. Both are great cameras and both give you access to great glass.

Nice thing about the F100 is it can use almost any Nikon F mount lens from manual AI (it reads the F stop from the lens coupling and works in A and M modes) to up to the latest lenses (G series work, VR lenses work, all modes work) so you have about sixty years of lenses to pick from. It has the 10 pin connector so it uses all the 10 pin accessories standard to Nikon cameras (not the latest remote controls or sync to flash). It is recording the photograph settings (including the lens type if the lens is chipped), and the data can be dumped to a compact flash card with the right card reader connected to the 10 pin connector. The F6 was upgraded to use the latest flash system (F6 can use all Nikon flashes) unlike the F100 so the last Nikon flash that worked with a Nikon film camera is the SB-800.

I did not know that about the photograph settings being recorded. I am going to have to find the right hardware to get that. It really is an amazing camera, I feel very lucky to have found it for such a good price.

Hi there 🖐️ Wow I lived in South Charleston for a year back in 2011 and went to photograph Charleston the capitol a beautiful place. I have this camera it is an amazing camera, today I was checking my old cameras and I found out that the battery holder was damaged, last time I used was 2 years ago and didn’t remove the batteries so I hope I can find a replacement battery holder and the camera will work. Thanks for sharing your thoughts in this camera

Charleston is a beautiful place, great for taking photos. By the way, if the parts inside the battery holder are still intact you may be able to simply clean it out. Of course it might be easier just to get a replacement on Amazon. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Yes, but no, because I like the F5 better, but really, I like the Canons better because the lenses are better and offer better adaptor compatibility with mirrorless cameras. But only because I don't own a Nikon DSLR, in which case, the F100 is perfect. Especially if you don't want the vertical grip

Not better in terms of image quality. You won't see any difference between any f5 or f100 I use both grip or without. What should I say my f6 is better than any analog you've got. Who cares. Lenses matter😂

@@AmericanExpatDaily Correct. I remember the F6 was over a grand and had something in it that caused cancer and had to be removed. I like your nature schots. Especially beautiful places I may never see. Your night schots were a tad grainy for me. And always listen to your wife. I must say. Your way of talking and how you do your show is different than the others I watch. You remind me of a nightclub singer who tells jokes and talks to the audience in between songs and piano playing and you have a sense of humor. It is refreshing.

Glad you like the style. I agree the night shots were a bit grainy. I would love to get my hands on an F6. Believe it or not, a lot of old lenses had radio active elements. I'm not sure when they realized the optical properties weren't worth the dangers of putting your face up to a radioactive object, but it does make me think I should get a geiger counter to check all these old cameras and lenses I've got lol
