That stuff is romantic, atmospheric, and mysterious, which is like a lot of urban fantasy YAs aimed at women. Things aimed at girls, even young ones, don't have to be all Barbie pink and hearts to work.

I don't really think it's so much as racist as that was the aesthetic on fairies/elves for a long time. You can see something similar in Lord of the Rings.
