That's not necessarily true a salt water tank can cost as much as fresh water tank depending on what you get.

Mollies definitely can survive in saltwater if acclimated slowly.
I have found that they didn’t lose color when in saltwater but GAINED color when put in saltwater.
What kind of color? A pale color?
U sure they aren’t just some plastic battery powered ones
@@dandyphan8511 They gained more of their yellows and oranges.
And are awesome algae eater for saltwater aquarium as well
I put mollies and guppies in salt water when they were in fresh water they died slowly due to finrot and stuff but the other tank with salt water they gained color and did not die the water is clear too
I love how so many people think they know everything about fish and are hating on this guy for putting mollies on saltwater. Mollies can live in either saltwater or freshwater.
Actually kind off they actually live on river deltas where the water conditions are between freshwater and saltwater. Like freshwater puffer, edlers, some guppies, bubblebe goby etc.
@@dimitris.4484 True, but they can live just fine in either fresh or saltwater as long as you drip acclimate them or something similar. My lfs has had mollies in their saltwater show tankfor a few months while waiting for some fish they want to become available.

However. These aren't wild caught mollies. In fact these kind of fish "balloon mollies" don't even exist in the wild. They made a deformed fish, bred in freshwater for the pet trade, bred to have curved spines and unhealthy characteristics. I can assure you that balloon mollies will not do well in a salt water setup. Maybe live for a year Max! Nearly all pet trade mollies are primarily freshwater, because that's where they have been kept and bred for thousands of generations (Molly generations). What a lot of the folks commenting down here don't realize is that mollies are brackish water fish; they tend to be found in semi-saltwater conditions and are able to swim further upstream into the more fresh water in their native habitats. This is perfectly fine for them, they are not being abused in any way.
Per Wikipedia; "These livebearers are native to fresh, brackish and salt water in the Americas, and some species in the genus are euryhaline." It's all good, y'all.

I didn’t know mollies could live in salt water!
why would you even have a saltwater tank if your not even gonna put saltwater fish in it🤦♂️
Mollies are a common feeder fish for marine fish. They are found in nature in fresh brackish and full salt.
+selectpet, yes,Mollies generally live in the brackish lakes of Florida and similar climates, though they can easily acclimate to saltwater or freshwater. My mom used to live in Florida when she was a kid, and when she went out on boat rides with her father-in-law, they would always spot Mollies in the brackish and freshwater lakes.
MasterAquatics: What happens if you put freshwater fishes in saltwater?

I literally just acclimated mollies and really enjoyed this video! ☺️
Funny thing I learned that Mollies were brackish water fish when I tried feeding one to a Scorpion fish I had, the scorpion fish never ate it but I realised the molly survived and decided to release the scorpion fish (it was caught by my late father at the beach) and the molly lived a happy life in the saltwater aquarium.
What did you think was ganna happen when you did this?!?!
Exactly what did happen
I think this can be done with about any fish that originally came from coastal rivers and live in a delta type environment. They have to be able to survive the brackish inflow that comes with the high tide or situations where currents just wash them right into the ocean for more prolonged periods. Now if their original freshwater habitat is high up on the river or inland lakes, then they're going to have some issues.
U make us wait so long for a saltwater tank and now you put mollies inside?

In case you didn't know, goldfish aren't meant to survive in saltwater. ... If the goldfish spread, they'll cause even more havoc than they are already. "If they can tolerate salt for a short period of time - enough to make the swim - from one river to another, they can spread,
Molly's are from brackish waters therefore can survive in both fresh and salt also they are great algae clean up crew too

A little known fact is that mollies are actually salt water fish. In the wild they lived in shallow lagoons of the Gulf of Mexico and as recently as 30 years ago many of the mollies sold for aquariums were wild caught.
Mollies can be found naturally in fresh / brackish / and saltwater... the title is misleading, there're very few things that I hate more than misleading titles.
Why so many dislikes??
The fish are safe.
Becouse people who dislike think he put Goldfish 8or other 100% freshwater fish) in. But mollies are fresh brakish and saltwater fish

i get that you technically can put them in saltwater but why?
Joey Wadsworth because why not
Mollies are actually brackish fish, so they can be acclimated into freshwater, saltwater, or brackish water.
Joey Wadsworth prob to show people what you can do with some fish
I find that saltwater fish are expensive for a shoal, aggressive, loners and everybody has chromis. I want some yellow in my saltwater aquarium...mollies seem to be a good choice. I gotta try it out.
Way back when I was a kid, it was hard to keep even black mollies in fresh water. They always got sick, which would eventually get all of your other fish sick eventually. Oddly the stupid molly wouldn't necessarily die, but everything else would, especially if you added salt to cure the ick or whatever was killing your fish.
Over the years, mollies have been bred to live better in fresh water, but they are still pretty much brackish fish. I might add that we used to feed guppies to salt water fish and we had some guppies that were still alive in salt water after a day. Guppies can do brackish and possibly marine conditions too.
Using mollies to cycle in a marine aquarium is a good idea, I once used monos. When the tank had cycling issues, I just moved the monos back into fresh water until the marine tank balanced out.
The down side about using molies to set up a marine tank is that eventually your true marine fish are going to kill your mollies. I can't say why, but it happens more than not... so pretty much consider them cheap and expendable atarter fish.
I love molly fish lips just OMG I CANT
why are you doing that ?
Thats wayyy tooo stressful for the fish to be in front of predators .
putting freshwater fish in saltwater is cruel

Y D ya and shrimps really good if it's human grade unseasoned uncooked fish or crustacean is bettef
Its the same with any feeder animal that isn't quarantined. If he quarantined his feeders prior to feeding, there would be minimal risk of any casualties in his aquarium. He already knows the risks with feeders. He just wants to do what he wants since those are his aquariums. And they do not label them feeder fish because it is cheaper. They label any fish feeders if those arent their best selling or best looking fish. Most people dont go to pet shops to purchase goldfish or minnows unless its for feeding.
I like your land fish its cute
A respectful experiment.
I was so inexperinced back then, I tought tapwater (which is technically freashwater) was good enough for any fish.

Why so many dislikes? This is purely a science video!
You should try hikari first bites for your fry it’s a lot easier then brine shrimp and a lot cheaper
Brine shrimp is actually cheaper and has better health benefits
I sell saltwater mollies all the time they are excellent algae eaters for nano tanks. And for the haters do your research before bashing him and realize that mollies are brackish water from the beginning so if you want to be a hater hate your local pet store for forcing them to be freshwater and not their original brackish water that they were born into in the first place
thanks for helping me on my anatomy and physiology test with this video lol
Why are people hating on this it’s a pretty interesting experiment
I put a dolphin in my pool, doesn't wanna work ;insert Elon Musk meme;
I like the way you want to show people weather it can survive or not, but such experiments can cause death, and causing death is one of the worst things you can do to a captive fish whom you grew
That’s not the point, he just wanted mollies in his saltwater tank, he knew they could live
Can you add mollies to saltwater yes? Is it smart or kind? No. Fish aren’t experiments and shouldn’t be treated as such. They belong in slightly brackish water. They CAN adapt to saltwater, but studies say it can cause more harm than good, and can end up stressing them out. Please. I have a 30 gallon aquascaped aquarium of my own and am a veterinary intern. Just because you can do something… doesn’t mean you should. Will it survive? Most likely. Is it in the fish’s best interest? Absolutely not. Just risky altogether.
That cat looks like my cat that I lost 6months ago😭

I only had black mollies once a long time ago in salt water they did fine I don't remember their black ever being dull or not as black.

I already knew mollies can be both fresh water and salt water. But u I never tried it. Thank for showing us.
They thrive in brackish water. So saltwater is not a problem for these guys.
Please quarantine all feeder fish or make sure they're clean
contaminates could be carried by them and they will mess with the water and fish
Yes put goldfish in saltwater. Said that they would they said. Did my research first, I did.
Logan Nguyen do you know there really salt in there and we goldfish can’t stand salt
Mollies can live their whole lives in saltwater because in the area they live in the wild they constantly move between brackish (Freshwater that is a little salty) and saltwater just like a Axelotl but axelotls can’t survive in too salty water

Haaaa, stop the hate by acknowledging the fact that molly fish can live in either salt or fresh water. Idiots who were spreading hate
Mollies have the unique ability to survive in freshwater, brackish water and even full salt water. They do best in SLIGHTLY brackish water. Although they can survive in full salt water and full freshwater, it is not ideal for them. Mollies need a slightly brackish water with an alkaline ph of 7.5 - 8.5 and nitrate levels 10ppm or less. Mollies do not tolerate higher levels of nitrates as easily as other fish as it can stunt fry development and shorten life expectancy . Although they are hardy, they do have requirements
Plot twist: the water was never salt water
ikr
From my experience Molly’s colors tend to improve significantly in salt water
Mollies used to be the standard for beginning a saltwater aquarium. Back then it could be difficult to cycle a new marine aquarium but the mollies kicked things off and they were very inexpensive.
My very first reef tank was started with 2 black and 2 gold mollies and I don't remember them losing their color at all of course, that was in 1987 so it's been a minute.
I've actually been toying with the idea of starting a new reef aquarium... Haven't had any saltwater aquarium in 20 years... and if I do, a few mollies would be the only vertebrates in the tank.
Who have cats they definitely put aquarium in their house Lmao.
The colours do change, but it's for the better, not the worse
Fish Hitler lol

Love the cat
Mollies are highly adaptable to fresh, brine or straight out saltwater. They actually prefer a bit of brine
I’m watching this at 2am while I’m on my break
I havent watched yet but this reminds me of an experiment me and my dad were conducting from the ages of 6 or 7-8. We started out with all the fish being in freshwater, and over time like after the course of a month we'd add a total of a teaspoon of salt into the tank. And we did that for a year and all the freshwater fish were still alive. They only died from hostile fish and old age. It was cool as hell.
What about the other way around?
Saltwater in freshwater
Honestly, I have a freshwater pond for Koi fish because they look amazing so I wouldn’t know if that worked. Though it seems like a fine idea to try, it would be wrong to do it and have the fish die.
mollies and platies can be brackish fish or if acclimated it can be either or.
My cat is in a good shape in saltwater. They doing just fine and they love it. Its already 7 months my cat live in saltwater.
