We put/lay right sides together to sew up, we use the word "Gap," as in "leave a gap," either to turn whatever is inside, "inside out" or to "turn out," through the gap, to bring "right sides" out, leaving "wrong sides" inside together, not the word return. I am sorry if that was too confusing. Starting and ending a row of stitches by hand we "make a knot or knot off," whichever stitch we choose to use, for machine stitching we start and end with a back-stitch whether 1, 2 or more stitches are done for strength or looks. The pretty side of fabric is the outside or "right side," or front of fabric, the inner or inside or "wrong side" of fabric is the other side or "back" side. A notch is only one triangular space, what you had to do here, is "cut back" or "trim" the "seam allowances," then clip the curves and the corners. I hope I can be seen as helpful, as that was my intention. When I designed a case for scissors, I put a triangular piece as a pocket in the back of the case, to keep the points away from the outsides of the case, so that the tips couldn't cut it by accident.
