Lesson 4 hits hard. My wife makes fun of me for "ritualizing" my pack openings. I'll get a booster box (one for opening, one to set aside) but plan a day later in the week to open it, I put on some good music, surround myself in my previous hits and current collection, pull out my etb booklets and slowly check off cards I don't have, I'll open three packs at a time then have a quick break and go back at it, I need my favorite energy drink and THC vape. I make the experience something to look back on. I don't think I'll stop. It's how this dad decompresses after a hard week of life.
I see absolutely no difference between doing what you describe (I don't do quite as much) and going fishing in full gear for a whole day (which I also do). It's getting away from stuff, internally or externally. Cavemen sat around the fire and watches the flames dance for hours, we look at pretty cards or take pictures of fish. Same same.
Totally can relate to this video! Just started collecting middle of last year. Nostalgia of Pokémon 151 brought me back into the hobby! Art work in modern cards are getting better and better.
So refreshing to hear an actual collector with a passion for it! I'm sick of all these 'investing' youtubers, hoarding sealed products and only chasing the big cards. Love your content, keep it up!
This is awesome! I started collecting about 7 years ago and 2 years later gave an entire collection away....last year found myself collecting again and totally left in regret after giving that collection away. But now iv been collecting for just over a year. Just may take your advice and document more of my collecting to add more value and moments to the money spent. We needed this collecting advice. Thanks keep it up!
Great advice about following an illustrator whose works you enjoy and not focusing solely on the card's monetary value! I believe this is what made Pokémon so magical in the beginning. Keep up the great videos, just subscribed!
I love what you said about the value for collectors coming from the stories behind each card. More than anything, I remember the circumstances surrounding each of my most favorite cards: Seeing the art of the test tube Mewtwo which pulled me back into collecting after a decade, my Galarian Rapidash V that I found only because my friend said I should look at one more table before leaving a convention, my husband pulling the shiny pikachu from Paldean Fates which happened to be the only card I cared about in the whole set. Every time I see these cards in their displays...I flash back to those precious moments :)
Dude I love the part about, “Don’t open just for the expensive cards and not enjoy the moment.” I recently also pulled the greninja and I absolutely appreciate the art of the card and the memory I can think back on everytime I look at it
Not into Pokemon card collecting (at least not yet), but as a Star Wars Unlimited collector and small time content creator, this all resonates with me! Love the content, keep it up!
Much appreciated! Glad these lessons extend across all collecting worlds. Good luck with your star wars collection (huge fan myself) and your content creation! 😊
I love collecting but i'm probably never buying packs again. I like collecting as a hobby, but if i ever stop collecting im gonna get more back from singles.
honestly i really needed to hear all of this right now. i've been feeling down with a streak of unlucky pulls for awhile. also i have a similar story, i also pulled the greninja ex sir from a random gengar back to school 2 pack blister with my partner while on vacation. it was an insane moment and i wish i had it filmed. that was the moment that i thought starting to film my openings regardless what i pull haha. it's also refreshing to hear someone say collecting isn't investing. i love pokemon and the art in these cards. awesome video and awesome collection!
Your Greninja pulls makes me really happy! I can relate so much to that. It might not have been filmed but that memory will be engrained in you. I'll say the same thing everyone told me, you're luck is coming! Maybe you're just saving it for Sparking Surge haha!!!
I wasn’t going to comment but I caved.. first: you just gained a fat sub from me. Second: I love your view on the subject/ topic. Third: I love the moment at 3:35 this is how I am with a lot of my cards.. it doesn’t matter the value.. it’s the memories.. especially when you share them with others. Like when my mom pulled the mew vmax alt art from fusion strike or when my little brother pulled leafeon vmax alt art from eevee heros. It’s those memories that make me not care about monetary value and more about the memory that brings me back to that moment in time. The card becomes a memento. I recently started collecting again and I’m glad I have a better mindset this time. It’s not about the money for me this time.
I'm happy you took the time to comment! I realized I couldn't be the only one experiencing this way of collecting. Seeing all the people relating to my first year back has made this next year so much more exciting!! Congrats on the amazing pulls and look forward to seeing you around!! 😊
This definitely seems like a great way of doing it. I watched one RUclips video of a guy hunting down underrated art at a card show and spend $4,000 on singles without ever ripping a pack in 3 months... it's time to liquidate and reevaluate the hobby and my method of collecting lol may have to become a vendor at some local shows to get the most for my cards 😅😅
I'm into the idea of hunting singles. Can still be a fun experience based on my time in Japan. Sometimes you find that right card or right deal that gets you fired up.
Just caught up on all the videos I had missed and it's been a joy following your channel! I can't wait for what the future holds for this channel! Since i just caught up, I have to mention that your trip to Japan seemed amazing. Sounds like it ended up being a huge success! Also what can I say, pulling the Greninja SIR while looking for frogs during a hike is just too perfect haha.
Ive just barely started collecting bulk my first goal is one of every pokemon, just going for literal bulk first so all commons and uncommons. The joy of shifting through hundreds of cards and finding a few i dont yet have is incredible they may just be chep bulk but to me its super fun and exciting
I was on a hot streak after getting my first 151 Charizard and the Greninja SIR pull on only an ETB & Booster box for TM really helped me close off the year. Might have used up all my luck with that though 😅
I spend WAY more on packs than the cards are worth, most of the time. But I still won’t buy the singles. That feeling of getting the pull is worth it to me
I’m a month in collecting with a 900aud collection after spending about 500aud thanks to silver tempest being loaded with hits lately I got 46 packs in a row with hits included 2 lugia v alt arts so lucky
Dude, that's amazing! I think the majority of my losses are from Sword and Sheild era sets. I've pulled hundreds of dollars worth and the best card I've got from it all has been the Glaceon. It's been rough.
Thanks dude! Just saw your Instagram page. Love the colour and direction you're going in. Just got back into Go after my Japan trip. Keep up the content!
@@WagsTCG thank you ! I got back into Go and collecting last year myself. Still sorta new to everything but excited! Looking forward to more content of yours!
I’ve just started collecting cards. Bought my first booster box of the TM set. 74% complete . At this point is it a lot cheaper to just chase singles as it surely would result in many doublers and the cost would be insane ?
Hey! Welcome to collecting!! TM is a great place to start with tons of really great illustration cards. I think it depends on your situation. Obviously the thrill of collecting is buying packs and chasing your missing cards, which plays into that fun/pack idea I mention in the video. In general though it's usually cheaper to buy singles. Ask yourself whether you have the budget to continue opening packs and if so, are you ok getting doubles in the process. If that answer is no then try to find some deals on singles. Buying singles can actually be a fun too! Looking for deals and placing bids in auctions to complete your collection is a different kind of fun.
@@WagsTCG thanks for the reply. Yeah I think that’s where I’m at. I reckon I’ll jump on a stellar crown booster box. Get the buzz from that and then chase what I missing in singles . Still have an unopened box of 151 also
That's actually a really good point. I'm trying to master set 151. It's a slow process, but when I take breaks and come back it's much more exciting to open packs.
Luck and budget are variable. Not aiming for the best, just a realistic 1 year of a Pokemon card collector. Pulling 3 of the top card from scarlet and violet sets with a small budget is arguably pretty good.
Lesson 2 is very true except when you're explaining to your wife why you spend 2000$ in 6 months on pokemon cards, then it needs to be described as very smart investments
The collection is based off my past year of collecting in the scarlet and violet era! Pulled Greninja, 151 Charizard x2, Cassieopia, Van Gogh Pikachu and a bunch in the $30-50 range. It adds up!
You must have missed my top loader binder at the end. The first page alone is $500. I have my collection input into the Collectr app which tracks most recent sales. You're right though, most of the cards I show in the first 7min of the video are in the $1-$5 range.
Join me for year 2 by subscribing to the channel!! See everyone soon!! :)
yo what binder do you have, it looks really good. Do you have a link for that

I feel the tranquility from here! This might be my favorite comment since I started collecting.
