I agree - Jerry is one of my favorites on youtube. I love great story telling. Some other favorites are Bob Gymlan, MrBallen and David Paulides but none of those are about the great days and actors of Hollywood movies - more about missing people and Sasquatch experiences. Still, great story telling all around and that is an art form not many people master like Jerry has. He's a real gem.
Lost count how many times me and my dad sat and watched 'Ride The High Country'. Westerns are just so rewatchable, especially with actors like Joel McCrea. My dads gone now, but I'll continue to appreciate the films and actors he got me into. Thanks for the upload.
Jerry’s voice and stories he narrates makes me miss the old days. When times were so much more innocent and full of innocent wonder. Makes me wish I elks
Thanks for this wonderful biography. I’ve recently come into contact with Joel McCrea’s movies and really like them. My favorite one so far is The More the Merrier, which won the Oscar for best film of 1943. It’s a really fun film and Jean Arthur and Charles Coburn are also in it. Coburn won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for that film.
Excellent production, as always. A lot of time and effort goes into these. I'm wondering when someone is going to do the story of the life of private investigator, biographer and historian Jerry Skinner. He absolutely deserves it!!
Jerry, I absolutely love your biographies!!! They are so well edited, the music is terrific, and your voice overs are wonderful! It was great seeing photos from my home town area "back in the day" when So. Cal. truly was "shangri-la". Looking forward to your next production!
Enjoyed your video Jerry; I grew up watching all the Western's on T.V. Joel McCrea excellent actor a Cowboy at heart. Wonderful family man. Loved the shot of Hollywood High I am a graduate of 1967 up at the Hollywood Bowl. I appreciate the calmness and clearness of your voice. Till next time Jerry take care.
Mr Skinner. Thanks for aother Top Notch Tribute to a True American Class Actor. The men & Women Actors from this my Grandfather’s Generation were Down to Earth Family loving True Americans. Sadly the last few Generations of so called Actors-don’t hold a Candle to these Greats!!!!!🇺🇸
Thanks Jerry for another great biography I was only thinking it’s time for Jerry to come with another one and up you pop ,Thanks very much for the time you take to do them 👍👍👍
Jerry thank you so much again a wonderful video. Joel McCrea was one of my favorite actors. They show his films on INSP on cable. I watched his films everytime one is playing. He was a very handsome man as well as a great actor. I hate to say this I hope it doesn't offend anyone but all the actors are gone or don't do acting anymore. Breaks my heart. But thank goodness we have them in their films. Jerry again a thank you. The time it takes to put one of these together has to takes hours of research.
Congratulations,,as always u r the cats MEOW,,carry on ,,how about an update on Errol Flynn / and some Canadian Actors Thanks in advance,,HANK,, Colonel Hank HANDKE DCH QDJR Niagara Falls ont Canada.
Thank you Sir Jerry Skinner. Your talent in production with your skills in research and storytelling make this the MOST "enjoyable" channel on RUclips. Thanks for sharing
Another well made video. Thank you for sharing his story. I pray someone sees these videos and have them stored away for the future generations. They are educational and priceless. Mahalo 🌸🤙🌸
Great actor. A natural, as Jerry said. He never seemed to be "acting", which is one of the rarest gifts an actor could have. "Ride the High Country" is now considered one of the greatest westerns ever made. At the time of its release in 1962 it went mostly unnoticed by critics, but the eminent NY Times film critic Bosley Crowther loved it, calling it a "perfectly dandy little western", and the film was much admired in Europe, where it won first prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
I didn't realize how great of an actor he was until I saw him on the show "This Is Your Life" when he thought he was there to honor another actor but was actually there to get honored himself. They surprised him with old friends and both Jody and David were there to honor their father as well. Joel was so moved by it all that he could barely speak at times - he was actually very humble about his talent and thought many actors were much better than he was. I disagree - after seeing his humility and quiet response to being so honored it was obvious that the characters he played he was really playing - it wasn't just him acting like himself - it was him using his fantastic acting skills. Not a lot of people know this but it was the powerful leading actresses of his era that made him famous - they kept developing crushes on him and falling in love with him as Barbara Stanwyck did and they kept insisting that they wanted to play opposite Joel - Jean Arthur was so smitten with him that she got physically nauseated every time they were going to film a scene together in "The More The Merrier" which was another fantastic film of Joel's. He was very impressive and talented. He also loved to sing and had a great voice with a range that spanned the baritone and tenor scales. I miss him very, very much.
Thank you Jerry.. 9 months ago , on the Lee Marvin Documentary, I asked for this.. I knew you would eventually get to do this on Mr. McCrea. A Huge THANK YOU . What a really nice man he was...but tough enough to Break a Steer and ride it in a Movie. Amazing Man's Man !
Thank you Carvin, It sometimes takes me a while to get around to it, but i read all comments and keep it in mind. By the way, i liked your channel, especially the one on Jacksonville, Florida in the 1950s, Jerry
BRAVO!! Excellent job, as always. I was named after Joel McCrea, my Mom was a big fan, I was born in 1955, and I to have been a fan all my life. Thank You Jerry, this one means a lot to me.
Joel has always been one of my favorite actors from old Hollywood. I read once that he was such a natural actor he didn't need or do acting lessons. Joel had a natural, easy going style with a normal speaking voice. He was so good looking too. Nice bio here. Wow, he sure did own a lot of real estate!!
Thanks for the memories and story behind the scenes. I always enjoyed watching Joel McCrea movies and westerns as a kid and still on the rerun channel. So; thanks again for all the hard and dedicated work you do reminding us of our favorite movie stars and other notable people. Thanks👍
I absolutely loved that documentary Jerry, always loved Joel’s films growing up, and I must confess I had moist eyes by the time the documentary finished. He had a lovely life didn’t he? I’m so glad he did. Xxx
Mr Skinner’s biography’s are the best, not all narratives are easy to listen to but Mr Skinner’s is, his voice is just right, enjoyable thanks for posting 👍
Thank You. He has ALWAYS been one of my favorites. When I was much younger I felt strongly about John Wayne. As I’ve grown older I’ve realized what the ‘real deal’ is all about. Joel Was the REAL DEAL…..
Well his wife was estranged from him for over a year because of an affair that led to the birth of a child outta wedlock. Though she did take him back after a dry spell.
@maxmankid What happened to the child out of wedock? That must have been hard for both Joel and his wife. I'm glad they got back together again. I respect Joel. And both he and Randolp Scott were GREAT in Ride the High Country. I just saw it again the other day. I'm an old gramma now, 81, and I loved spending time with horses on my grampa's dairy farm when I was a kid. Oh, how times have changed. I miss the old values and simple life.
He was a fine actor. My favorites he did was.... Sullivan's Travels 1941 ( with a young Veronica Lake who is simply stunning in this film ! ) A must see classic movie. The More the Merrier 1943, very good comedy. Ride the High Country 1962 ,directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Randolph Scott. It has a great all around cast in the movie and is my favorite western he did. The Virginian 1946 is pretty good too.
Oh my gosh Jerry - my name isn't Monica - it is Mona. My channels here on youtube are monahawk and there is one called Mona Leigh. I can't thank you enough for doing this piece on Joel - he was such a special and humble human being. Did you know that Katherine Hepburn said of Joel's acting ability that he was as good if not better than Spencer Tracy or Humphrey Bogert? She did. I have a gift that Katherine gave to Joel many decades ago which my brother Peter sent to me after we found each other. Long story. Even though Frances and Joel had their very difficult times in their marriage they truly loved each other and worked through all of the difficulties a Hollywood marriage can bring and she was by his side when he passed...on the anniversary of their wedding - giving new meaning to "until death do we part". I never got to meet Frances but I really wish I had. I did meet my grandmother, Louise Whipple McCrea - she was an awesome lady but didn't want to get to know me...understandable. Thanks again Jerry - you're a sweetheart...and I have been watching your videos for quite some while. I always enjoy them very much. Mona Leigh McCrea
That was great Jerry! I loved all the old westerns and it's nice to know that Joel was a real horseman! Loved the western music intro too! Great choice!
Thank you Jerry, I saw almost all his movies. A very gentle man, I especially loved The high country. Keep em coming Jerry, I look forward to you every week. Stay well my friend, Augie Blase, Winter Springs Florida.🤠
If there's any doubt as to McCrea's cowboy cred, watch his movie, Four Faces West, where, on the run from the law, he saddle breaks a longhorn steer and rides him through the desert. I don't think anyone but McCrea could have done the wrangling for such a totally awesome feat.
i was hoping you'd do an episode of Joel McCrea. I grew up in 1000 oaks and our house was adjacent to his property. This was in the early 70's and he would ride his horse right up to our backyard and give me and my sister rides. He was a very nice and likable man as well as his wife. His grandson Wyatt owns the house Joel bought in the 40's and before covid he would have outdoor movies in the summer of his Grandpas pictures.
Just so everyone knows, Mona Leigh is Joel McCrea's daughter and i am sure would be glad to answer any questions about her dad that you might have. Thank you Mona. Jerry
A nice run of credits by one of the great western stars! Also nice to learn that he was such a family man with no shite like boozing, drugs, sexual exploits outside of marriage etc.! Refreshing!
Jerry it's Keith When I first saw the opening picture it looked like it was James Arness to me. Great story Jerry I love to see the old cars in there. Keep them coming buddy I love it. KK
Keith - I have always thought that photo of Joel looked more like James Arness as well. I sure miss Gunsmoke. They just don't make them like they used to.
Jerry, I love your videos. I have a request: Could you please do a documentary on the McMinn County War. I've seen a few, and I watched the movie, but I'm certain that you could make the story more interesting.
My day instantly became better the second I saw a new Jerry Skinner documentary was up to view. Much gratitude sir for sharing your craft with us.
Well put

what a beautiful story. i shall look up all his movies now. our old actors were the absolute best. well done Jerry!
thank you for another fantastic biopic, Vielen Dank from Germany, exchange student at Thousand Oaks High School 1978 / 79
What a life! I always liked Joel McRae. Thanks for putting this together.
Ride the High Country with Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott is one of the best Westerns
Great one, Jerry. Mariette Hartley, who started with McCrea, is now 80 and still acting btw. Helluva career, too.
She was a beauty indeed in the 70’s and still has a very dignified appearance 👌

I was a 70s kid, AND a Rockford, and Hulk fan, so I had to like her by default!

Wild West Gal, i love your name. Jerry
Growing up in Thousand Oaks we sometimes used to ride horses down to the general store for candy. It was a magical time and so very beautiful there.
A Fantastic actor and individual. Actors and people are rare in our lifetimes. Rest in Peace Mr. McCrea.

I think Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott were perfectly cast in Ride the High Country. The final scene always makes me tear up.
