Had a '96 for eight years. Bone stock except for a 2" lift and 31 x 10.5 AT's. Hands down the most reliable vehicle we have ever owned. Not a purebred off roader, but it'll go 90% of anywhere a Rover or a Rubicon will go. And who does that very often? For a great rig at an affordable price, get one before the kids wreck 'em all, like the old CJ's.
Slingsomelead agreed a mate tried to buy one here last year in chicago and they were all rusted wrecks with broken and rusted frames for over 4k. That was a steal
This brings back memories. I had it in 2 door, 92, same color and model. Bought it for $1100 in New York. Mine was rusted and the floor boards had holes. I’ll take this one off your hands!
My dad used to have one of these in Indonesia when it first came out, sold it after a few years of ownership. It was a manual, when cold it was difficult to engage reverse, the AC was always problematic, clutch was heavy af and burnt out prematurely. But when the stars aligned and everything was working as it should, according to him it was one of the best cars he ever had.
I absolutely love that Cherokee. Really takes me back to the one I had back in college. It was a great road tripping vehicle, and when I went off-road to do some backwoods camping it handled the terrain just fine. Added bonus, my then-girlfriend didn't complain when riding in it as opposed to the little, POS hatchback that I had.
Having owned Cherokees since the 90's it irks me when someone calls the XJ a crossover. It didn't start as a car and convert to a 4x4. It was made from the ground up as a propper 4 wheel drive utility vehicle. The Suburban, K5 Blazer, Bronco and SJ Cherokee / Wagoneer were utility vehicles, the XJ was a "Sport" Utility Vehicle. Like the F150 is a pickup truck and the 80's Ranger, Chevy S10, Jeep Comanche & others were called "sport" trucks. Sport being the operative term meaning: small, nimble & easy to park.
From Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Cherokee_(XJ) "The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) is a compact sport utility vehicle that was manufactured and marketed by Jeep in the USA from 1983[2] to 2001, as well as in other countries, and sometimes under other names, until 2014, with Jeep selling almost 3 million units between 1984 and 2001.[3] Sharing the name of the original full-size Cherokee SJ model, the 1984 Cherokee XJ was Jeep's first all-new vehicle design since the 1963 SJ Wagoneer, from which the '74 SJ Cherokee had been derived.[3] Instead of the traditional separate body and chassis, the XJ featured a light-weight, compact and space-efficient, integrated body and frame design,[4] The models were originally marketed as Sportwagons and became the precursor to the modern sport utility vehicle (SUV) as that term was not yet in use.[5][6]"
A station wagon, also called an estate car, estate wagon, or simply wagon or estate, is an automotive body-style variant of a sedan/saloon with its roof extended rearward[1] over a shared passenger/cargo volume with access at the back via a third or fifth door (the liftgate or tailgate), instead of a trunk/boot lid. The body style transforms a standard three-box design into a two-box design - to include an A, B, and C-pillar, as well as a D-pillar. Station wagons can flexibly reconfigure their interior volume via fold-down rear seats to prioritize either passenger or cargo volume. There is no sedan variant of the Wagoneer or Cherokee.
man, I just fell in love with that XJ, what a beauty. From a proud owner of two XJs and a JK one of the XJ with almost 300k miles in it and still going strong
I'm 59 years old and have probably seen most of those 2.9 million Cherokees built, lol. Having said that, I really enjoy this one. I haven't seen one in a long time and that color is very cool and probably rare. I don't remember ever seeing that color. When you introduced it in the last video, it really looked great. Nice choice, Tommy!
I had two Cherokees; 1986 Limited with Select Track and 1998 Sport rear wheel drive. Awesome vehicles, very honest in their response. That one looks pristine!
Exactly what I have been waiting for. It even looks better than my '92 Cherokee. Now install the lockers and take it up GM hill. Thanks Tommy, good job.
Had a 92 sport myself. Power nothing. No A/C. It was great. Literally nothing ever broke. I built it and 4x4'd for years. Only problems it gave me were due to upgrades I made or poor quality parts failing that I installed. 4.0L 5spd. It was a dream.
great to see a stock XJ on the trail! - most of them weren't lucky enough to see a dirt trail in their mechanical lifespan. But even lifted ones with open diffs have to use momentum to carry them over some obstacles with wheels spinning - old school fun!
Couldn't tell, but I suspect that had the turd D35 rear axle. I wouldn't lock it unless you like seeing why the c-clip axle sucks so bad. If you're looking for a Cherokee to off-road, try and find a chrysler 8.25 rear. A D-44 was an option, but incredibly difficult to find. The Chrysler is almost as strong and can handle lockers much better.
I have fond memories of the '95 Cherokee I had. Rock crawling behind Central City, Mosquito Pass... just some of the fun places. It did have the limited slip differential, and all terrain tires, which would have helped the one in this video. The ride was a little harsher than the current crop of Cherokees.
Perfect truck for a pair of Detroit Truetrac's or Aussie Lockers. The Cherokee is a great vehicle for a daily driver and off roader. They aren't expensive and are somewhat cheap to modify. It's a shame they didn't come with front and rear lockers or limited slips stock, but they are fantastic trucks. The power of that 4.0L feels a lot better than it actually is. I often hear that they are torque monster's and that is far from correct, but other than oil leakers they do run smooth and for a lot of miles. If you guys do something for it just for the show be a bit different and put in a pair of Detroit Truetrac's or Aussie Lockers (they would likely sponsor you for the show) along with a good set of stock replacement Rancho or Bilstein shocks and go have fun off road with the tires you already have. Too many want to lift it and add big tires. With front and rear lockers or limited slips it would go just about anywhere the average off road guy would ever care to do. Thank you for the work you guys do. It's appreciated. I'll be following this new toy.
I love my xj it goes anywhere.disconnect the front swaybar and it will flex like crazy...oh u done need swaybars on a xj anyways they are real stable on the highway too..approach angle & departurer angle will increase with a lift..
I have a 1997 xj sport. It has a budget 2" lift and the rest of it is bone stock. It has 247k miles on it and still runs like a scalded dog. I will probably keep it forever! I bought it because it had no power windows,no power locks, and no ABS. Less stuff to break.
I miss my 96 Classic Ltd XJ, even if the a/c was always pretty rubbish. Comfortable and great ride height plus all that power. We had to get rid of it because of the bad fuel economy but I didn't want to.
This is a NICE XJ! The only upgrades I would do would be a limited or traclock rear differential, front tow hooks and if it does not have a tow hitch, add one of those.. I would grab a set of cheap steel wheels with more aggressive off road tread in about the same size. Then you can go almost anywhere you would want to go that would not be destructive to the vehicle. This one is about as good as it gets for a small very capable SUV.
Middle of summer is like Cherokee sale season here. If the 4x4 works, but the AC doesn't you can get a really nice one for $3K-$4K. If ugly and painted with black primer or bed liner doesn't bother you can drop that price way down. Of course, the price goes back up with the first sign of snow.
With a rear locker, a lift and some beefier tires that thing wil do almost as much as modern jeep, especially if you know how to drive off road oh and btw, that thing looks near mint, where I live in the mountains of va, all the older ones are pretty much rust buckets, wich is a shame those things are reliable if they have been maintained.
I've got 2 of these with the 4.0 liter straight 6 cyl,(both are the 2 door versions though) one is a 1989 Pioneer I bought for $2000.00 about 4years ago,its fully equipped power everything with the same transmission and transfer case but with a limited slip in the rear from the factory. I'm running 35" BFG Mud Terrain tires in the summer and 33" MTR's on it in the winter. It has about a 4" lift that has sagged to about 3" and trimmed fender. It still has the stock drive train. I've also got a 1990 2 door(completely bone stock)that I just bought for a $100 that has the 5 speed stick with no extra options but they both work really good even with over 220,000 miles each. You got it for 3 grand with brand new michelin tires?!? Ummm you paid for the tires and then practically got the Jeep for free!!!🤑👍
Paid 5500 for 2001 excellent condition,129,000 miles, needs driverside door hinge fix bought the plate from Hooligans love my Jeeps I have a 1990 yj as well!!
What I hate is when someone calls the "BEER HOLDERS" in a Cherokee "Cup holders". You didn't do this , but it came to mind as I read some comments about using the word crossover.
I got a 2000 Cherokee sport about a month ago with a 5spd manual for $1200 lol, if you're not afraid to do a little work you can get a good cherokee for dirt cheap
Good stuff. I live in Michigan and am looking for a cheap 4x4 for the winters with a bit of off road capability too. Those older Cherokees cover everything I'm looking for. 4Runners are great too, but resale is too high imo. I'm only looking to spend between 2-4k.
Disconnect that sway bar and you would open up like 6 more inches of travel movement on each side on the front and you wouldn’t even have had to use momentum
That is a really nice JEep but really if you are going to rugged country, expect to get scratches and dents. That's the rule of the wild country. No one leaves unscarred.
Tommy that is a classic and a great buy ... That Jeep was a cross over .. We Chevy offroaders hate what crossover did to GM .... I am thinking about someday having a classic Cherokee beside my 89 S10 Blazer.... Look cross over fixed it to where we have no Blazer zr2 made ... No GM Equinox can not offroad like the old Blazers .... But are being made for families and to replace the cars... Tommy you should do an offroad test on the new Blazer RS to see what it can do... It does have an offroad mode...
I'm a happy camper.
Got a 01 WJ 4.0 121K.
"Can you still have fun off road with it?" You say...
Hell, a locked XJ can keep up with any year Rubicon.
That's a $6,000 ride here in CA. Been looking for a 98 99 for years that isn't hammered.
Had a '96 for eight years. Bone stock except for a 2" lift and 31 x 10.5 AT's. Hands down the most reliable vehicle we have ever owned. For a great rig at an affordable price, get one before the kids wreck 'em all, like the old CJ's.
I prefer the timeless, boxy look this Jeep has. Hope you have lots of great outdoor adventures with it. The scenery out there is just sublime.
3k here in Missouri gets you a rusted high schoolers Cherokee with miss match doors and peeling paint! That thing is 👍🏻
Slingsomelead agreed a mate tried to buy one here last year in chicago and they were all rusted wrecks with broken and rusted frames for over 4k. That was a steal
Matt Davies lol I have one for sale in Indiana that has rust on the bottom for 2200. Limited edition too ;) give me a call lol
No shit! What a deal...I'd buy that in a heart beat
welp it's still for sale lol
Same here in PA. There's nothing under 5k that I'm willing to sit inside.
This brings back memories. I had it in 2 door, 92, same color and model. Bought it for $1100 in New York. Mine was rusted and the floor boards had holes. I’ll take this one off your hands!

its a station wagon hence the wagoneer name
Like the the Power Wagon is a reformed station wagon?

The Wagoneer was developed as a station wagon and referred to as a 4 wheel drive wagon by Jeep.

Love these Jeeps. 1998 Sport ,113k and still going strong.
Damn that Cherokee is clean. What a deal.
Now I miss my Cherokee. Yours is a beauty. Thank you for the video.
man, I just fell in love with that XJ, what a beauty. From a proud owner of two XJs and a JK one of the XJ with almost 300k miles in it and still going strong
New shocks and some mud terrains would make a world of difference...
Such a good looking Jeep for its age !!!

I painted my cherokee the same colour. Mine is a 2.1 diesel limited
I had two Cherokees; 1986 Limited with Select Track and 1998 Sport rear wheel drive. Awesome vehicles, very honest in their response. That one looks pristine!
Doing fun things in cheap (and genuinely affordable) cars. Now, this is the kind of content I can get behind.
Exactly what I have been waiting for. It even looks better than my '92 Cherokee. Now install the lockers and take it up GM hill.
Thanks Tommy, good job.
I was a Jeep tech around the time these were new. Honestly believe the 91 and 92 are the pinnacle point of XJ competence and reliability.
@Jezebel the Jeep
Wild about that Renault sourced EFI, are we? To each their own.
2W3X4YZ5 actually I have a 96 zj 4.0 engine, but the body and frame are 88
@Jezebel the Jeep
👍🏻
98 and 99 were some of the best years
Had a 92 sport myself. Power nothing. No A/C. It was great. Literally nothing ever broke. I built it and 4x4'd for years. Only problems it gave me were due to upgrades I made or poor quality parts failing that I installed. 4.0L 5spd. It was a dream.
If only the newer Cherokee was like this rig. Simple capable solid off-road SUV.
great to see a stock XJ on the trail! - most of them weren't lucky enough to see a dirt trail in their mechanical lifespan. But even lifted ones with open diffs have to use momentum to carry them over some obstacles with wheels spinning - old school fun!
That XJ is great. Good and comfortable on-road and good off-road.
I still can't get over how good a deal that is. Seller had NO idea what they were doing.
Get some quick disconnects for the front anti-sway bar and you'll be in business. The old Cherokees are very capable in stock for in off-road terrain.
I LOVE my 2001 Limited Black Edition.
Third XJ so far and still ride/drives beautifully.
That 91 Laredo is a sweeeeeet ride!!!
Real good for the price. If it only had a locking diff. Your more likely to go on trail this than a new 60k jeep.
For under $300 you can get a locker for each diff.
About to buy an XJ this weekend... Good to know you can get those so cheap! Thanks!
Couldn't tell, but I suspect that had the turd D35 rear axle. I wouldn't lock it unless you like seeing why the c-clip axle sucks so bad. Mike Miller, excellent point. I hope I didn't just drive up the price before I get mine.
Ah, I had a 91. I love the interiors on those.
Why tf did I cry watching this. I’m a weirdo for loving this car that much, first car, first love. I miss you Blue ! 😭🥺
Thats a really clean Cherokee, very good deal.
I have fond memories of the '95 Cherokee I had. Rock crawling behind Central City, Mosquito Pass... just some of the fun places. That thing looks like it was kept in a museum. Amazing condition and no miles. Can't believe u got it for that price.
Amazingly clean.
That is super clean, you would never be able to find anything that good of shape in MD
These Cherokees and Jeep Commanders are some of the most understated Jeep 4x4s out there.
Jeep made 2.9 million of the tough, handsome and dependable Cherokee XJ -and mine is built with parts from 1.9 million of them.
I have owned two of these beasts; old school will never die!!!
Do me a favour, put the trans in neutral before shifting the transfer box. That way you won’t need to wrench on the lever to shit it!
What a beautiful vehicle!
I love my xj it goes anywhere.disconnect the front swaybar and it will flex like crazy...oh u done need swaybars on a xj anyways they are real stable on the highway too..approach angle & departurer angle will increase with a lift..
Just got me one exactly like this, just in black. It’s a really fun and beautiful car.
I got mine last November an 01 with a lift and tires for 3400. Not bad for my first jeep. 🤙
I have a 1997 xj sport. It has a budget 2" lift and the rest of it is bone stock. It has 247k miles on it and still runs like a scalded dog. I will probably keep it forever! I bought it because it had no power windows,no power locks, and no ABS. Less stuff to break.
Great job ! Now I want a 91 Cherokee!!
That Jeep is clean what a buy
XJ for the win! Just put a 6.5" lift in mine with 33" tires. Fun, wow!
Great segment guys keep up the great content across the board of the tfl channels
Thanks

Great series. Hope you keep it as stock as possible. It’s a classic
We get those Cherokees for around $1500 to $2500 up in the North West.
Love my 1991 Cherokee.
I’m in the PNW, where do you find em that cheap?
Always liked the XJs. Good choice.
That has to be the cleanest $3k Cherokee I've ever seen. That would fetch easily twice that here.
400 for mine in Michigan, and it still had 95% of the "frame" and rockers!
Idk enjoy your guys videos but you never really take the Jeeps truly off road just on some dirt roads or wet dirt road
Finally you guys get a good 4x4.
Nice video,..interesting to see this one go up the hill,..I never doubted it would, because mine did almost everything I wanted it to do too.
Miss mine too I had a 93 country edition white with gold trim and chrome accents. The 4.0 HO was a good engine.
Wow what a steal for 3k. Just picked a ‘92 Laredo Colorado Red up 239k for 3,300 and needs works. Plus you have the higher 4wd it’s insanely clean
My 2 door 5 speed XJ is starting to exceed my mechanical knowledge to maintain but damn do I love it!
That thing is in astounding condition. Take care of it. Hide the sawzall. Baby it and maintain it. There aren't that many left.
My first ever vehicle was a 94 V8 Grand Cherokee Laredo.
I had a BJ60 with worn leaves and the articulation was quite good. I definitely went with stock spring rate when replaced.
It was great!! Off road tho and had massive bull bar and light bars and everything regret getting rid of it
Get some lockers!! It’s all it needs!
This make me miss my Cherokee
LEGENDARY! Love the XJ!
in France a cherokee in this condition costs in the 4200 usd
I have the same one as the Goonies
I love it
good video
This is a great series. Keep up the good work!
Cool!!!! they were really great vehicles.
carl t exactly right! 👍👍👍
Thanks for bring back 'DiffLock'. I missed it
We’ve got 3 stock XJ’s love them all ! Such great vehicles as well as very reliable
I love these xj's better than the new ones
With a rear locker, a lift and some beefier tires that thing wil do almost as much as modern jeep, especially if you know how to drive off road oh and btw, that thing looks near mint, where I live in the mountains of va, all the older ones are pretty much rust buckets, wich is a shame those things are reliable if they have been maintained.
My 92 is in 4 inches of lift and 31s, adju adjustable arms. Very capable rig, just need lockers
Wow that jeep is super clean. I dont think they ever took it offraod
AW4 is a great trans...Basically a Toyota trans with some Borg Warner parts inside. Millions of Toyota Tacoma use that trans. (The AISIN version)
does that mean you can put a marlin crawler on it?!
That Jeep is in amazing condition.
Officially...Trail Rated! Great job
You got a good deal. These have been hiking up in price.
I don't remember my grandfather driving anything else. From the 80 until 2016! He would just change the color every 10 years :)
Beautiful drone shots! The jeep look clean..
Nice find
Good stuff. I live in Michigan and am looking for a cheap 4x4 for the winters with a bit of off road capability too. Those older Cherokees cover everything I'm looking for. 4Runners are great too, but resale is too high imo. I'm only looking to spend between 2-4k.
Great video, Tommy seems to be very knowledgeable and has great driving skills. One of the best presenters on this channel.
Disconnect that sway bar and you would open up like 6 more inches of travel movement on each side on the front and you wouldn’t even have had to use momentum
Yes. More of this please!
That is a really nice JEep but really if you are going to rugged country, expect to get scratches and dents. That's the rule of the wild country. No one leaves unscarred.
And yes definitly the most comfortable car iv been off roading in
Tommy that is a classic and a great buy ... That Jeep was a cross over .. We Chevy offroaders hate what crossover did to GM .... Curious as to why the WJ doesn't get much love. The Quadradrive system is one of the best and the inline 6 is pretty good too.
Wish they made them boxy like that still
Great video! I'm working on a cherokee build myself and I plan on documenting it RUclips too!
