  • In as much as actor Morgan Freeman's voice epitomizes the perceived voice of God, there's no perceiving when it comes to the voice of drag racing.
No single voice has been more closely associated with NHRA Championship Drag Racing than that of Dave McClelland. For 42 years (1961-2003), “Big Mac” announced NHRA events, served as TV host on TNN, cut TV and radio commercials and served as emcee at countless NHRA functions from banquets to press conferences.
In this episode of Legends: The Series, Season Three, the man hailed as the forever “Voice of the NHRA” explains how he went from college in Iowa to TV cameraman in Arkansas to announcer at a dragstrip in Louisiana to General Manager of Dallas International Motor Speedway to the NHRA home office in California.
It obviously was a labor of love insomuch as his first paycheck to announce the U.S. Nationals at Indy was $25 plus a hotel room he shared with a racer from Florida. No food allowance; no travel expenses. But, as he explains, it was all part of a wonderful and unlikely journey.

I was at the Winternationals a few years ago sitting in the stands with a friend of mine who used to drive a fuel altered back in the day. Dave walks by, sees my friend who he knew and he sat down with us for about an hour to watch racing. He was a complete gentleman. He talked to me like he knew me my whole life. Just a fine, genuine guy.

I'm here a couple of months after the oh so sad passing of this great, but humble man, who played such a big part in the soundtrack of my first 40yrs of life. Having grown-up at the dragstrip's of So-Calif, you best believe that man's voice still echoes through my racer's soul & will continue to do so, until I'm back in the stands & happily listening to his golden voice over the track PA system once again 🙏 RIP Big Mac, for you Sir are LEGEND ✝️

Back again watching this for the 3rd time I think. I’m turning 30 years old this year and I’m a bracket racer but a big history buff of drag racing. I love all these videos and series of the history of drag racing.

Thank you Bobby. What a great voice. I'm from Bakersfield. Been going to the track for 53 years. Bernie Mather was the first I remember. I grew up with Dave and Steve, what a team and what great announcers. I announced for 11 years at famoso. When I quit racing I hope I get to do it some more. See you in the lanes. Dragster Jeff out!

Coming back to watch this for the umpteenth time. Such an amazing video guys. I don't understand how this one didn't blow up. 32:10 to the end always gets me. That advice can be used for any career field. And I'll always think about Dave when the announcer goes silent at the track or isn't the most exciting person to listen to announce.

Best rivalry...? [29:39] Swamp Rat and The Chizzler. Those "rivalries" were hyperbolic in nature, even when Muldowney brought the femanism factor into it... That called PR.
