I bought a 9xi in early 1993, the excuse being that my first child was due soon and so I could justify the expense. At that time it was competing with the Nikon F801S (8801S) in price and I was hesitating between the two, but since I already had a Maxxum 7000 with some lenses and I also found a store that was selling it at 50% of the advertised retail price, I didn't hesitate any longer. I never regretted it and to this day I still have it even though I also have the Minolta 9 and the 7, I never wanted to sell it. I have the wireless flash controller that only works with the xi series, in the following series you could use the built-in flash as a controller but not the xi series controller. The Dynax 9 (maxxum9) was furiously criticized for having a built-in flash, the reviewers were all Nikon or Canon fans or paid by them, none of them took into account that this flash served as a remote controller for other flashes and called it unprofessional.
If I had the ability to travel back in time to 1992, when these first came out, I would buy a brand new 9XI and capture some of the best photos possible from that period. A cracking camera. And a cracking video.
Great camera, had it until the flat cable in the door broke - a known "feature". :( BTW, the "FUNC" button on the back also works with the rear dial (not only the front): metering mode, exposure compensation.
Story goes that Leica R8 and 9 have nothing to do with Minolta, but looking at R8 and ignoring the top controll whells, the body looks weird and 9Xi is the only modern camera that has something related to this weird shape. From R3 to R7 all Leica R were made after Minolta models, R3 - XE, R4 - XD.
It has a battery grip which allows the use of 4 AA batteries and allows the use of a hand grip that makes taking portraits easier but has no shutter button.

Thanks it is a rather special camera isn’t it …but you can still get them today and they are still great fun
The 9xi and 9000 are both on my wish list to do reviews on! Excellent overview!
I love mine, thinking about buying one or 2 more, great value for money!
they are really good value and incredible cameras ...what makes the whole Minolta AF thing better is how good value the lenses are as well.

Good tip!

Everything but the looks!
Very very true 😂😂

That’s very true the 9xi and R8/9 look similar don’t they …but they were totally designed by lecia
Does anybody know if they have a vertical control grip for the 9xi?
It has a battery grip which allows the use of 4 AA batteries and allows the use of a hand grip that makes taking portraits easier but has no shutter button.
Did you mean Alfie Bass ?
We’re do a say that ?
Well, I have one. With the bottom grip.
No you can’t have it. 😂
If the 9xi is Darth Vader what's the minolta alpha 9 going to be😮
I think they sort of shifted away from the plastic so the alpha 9 was a bit more traditional
The Chosen One 😉😂
Yeah its pretty good 👍
Deathstar
Built like a brick 💩. Loved mine.
