- My first impressions of the Viltrox 35mm lens for Nikon's Z mount. Is it a good alternative to Nikon's version? Spoiler- I think it is!!

I would consider this lens for my Nioon Z5! Great video.
It would be perfect for that camera!
The 85 is ridiculously sharp, fast to focus and great color. Ive used with people, landscapes and night street photography with great results. EBay new can be less $, as always read sellers reviews.
Good review look forward to water fall adventures!!
Thanks Chuck, that's good to know about the 85. I think these are nice lenses at a very attractive price point. Hopefully the work gets out and they continue to make lenses for this mount.
Viltrox is a saving grace for those of us who are Fuji users due to budget. They are the only company until recently who offer AF lenses for the Fuji system at a reasonable price. I have this lens in the Fuji mount and love it! I got my version as a used version, so it was an even better bargain.
They are definitely feeling a void that sigma and Tamron are leaving right now. I think eventually they will come out with zmount lenses but this lens is very good and I wouldn't hesitate to get the other two in this lineup.
And since you made this video, Viltrox has added a 16 mm f1.8, 20 mm f2.8 and a 40 mm f2.5 and a 50 mm f1.8 for FF Z cameras. I have the 16mm, the 20 mm and the 85mm f1.8 and am very happy with all of them. The price points don't hurt, either. :-)
This is a really tempting lens even though I have the Nikon 14-30 and 24-70. I like primes and have the Viltrox 85 for my Z6. Also, I liked the separation from the background in the vlog using the 35 and Z6ii.
For the price I think it's a very nice lens.
The first Viltrox lens that I purchased for my Z6 MKII is the new 28mm, I only use my cameras for photography so I can't say how it works for video, I brought a Fujifilm XT5 with the 13mm and the Nikon with the 28mm to shoot at the Gomez mill house in the Hudson valley of New York state, both worked well but the 28 mm was a better focal length to photograph than location. The 13 mm works well when you have a wider location to photograph.
I've been very happy with all of the viltrox lenses that I have. They seem to really be trying to make a splash in the market right now
Another great video Bill! The results look really impressive. I’ve read that there’s some kind of agreement between Canon, Nikon, and the major third party lens manufacturers, Sigma and Tamron specifically, to allow Nikon and Canon to fill out there lens lineups before they start producing lenses for the Z and RF mounts. I’m not sure if that’s true or just a rumor. But at a recent interview with the head of Sigma, no one asked the million solar question. So everyone is wondering if there was some kind of agreement that question was off the table… for now. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I’ve already made the investment in the Nikon version of those three focal lengths: 35mm f/1.8S, 50mm f/1.2S, and 85mm f/1.8S.
Well if that's the case then fill trucks is taking advantage of it and stepping in with some decent lenses. I would love to get my hands on their 85 mm and see how that is.
@@BillEricPhotography If you do, let me know and we’ll do the same comparison with the Nikon version.
I texted you.
@@BillEricPhotography I’m no insider. I just read customer reviews and was interested in the 85 as well. There seem to have been some issues with it in the original release, it suddenly becoming inoperable or in one case even allegedly making a camera inoperable.
One user says you should update the firmware immediately upon receiving the lens and you should be ok. There is a “new” version out by Pergear which is supposed to be more lightweight compact and better IQ which may be the one to get. Keeping my eyes open but hoping the issues have been resolved.
Well if I get my hands on the 85 I can definitely report on it and see if any issues have been fixed. So far the 35 mm seems like a very nice lens.
They have a cheap 24mm f1.8 too?
Time to go shopping. :)
Yes they do!
Great video! Very helpful content. I might need to check this out, I’d like to get a fast prime in this range. I just purchased the 14-30, haven’t used it much. Seems just as sharp as the 24-70 f4. I keep waiting for Sigma and Tamron to come out.
This is definitely worth a look. It's a very nice lens!
Just wish they charged a little more and weather sealed it as the Z bodies are very well sealed so l like to take advantage of that fact.
That would have been nice.
Great review Bill the video quality was excellent I'm all for third party lenses that can save you a lot of money the only Nikon lens I have is my old Nikon 35mm f1.8 G which works well on the D750 looking forward to the waterfall video thanks as always.
I feel the same way. If I can save a few bucks I'm good trying this party lenses. I had that 35mm g lens. It's a good one.
I’m happy that people are enjoying second part lenses like the viltrox, but for my experience I’ll never buy again a sigma, tamron, viltrox or any other lens for my nikon cameras that’s not a nikon, just cause it’s something you carry for life and you always want to get what you really trust and really deliver what you need. I tested on my z camera a second part lens, and even beeing ok, I felt the difference so clear, specially in harsh conditions, like low light and color quality on bright light..at least as a professional, I just always go for nikon!
Definitely makes sense but for someone who's not making money with their camera it can get very expensive to buy only Nikon branded lenses. And there are some great alternatives out there.
Quality content here. More power to your channel
Thanks Jacky!
Viltrox is doing a good job. It will wean away many iPhone or high end camera phone users into the photography fold.
Nikon canon Tamron Sigma zeiss lenses are not their competitors. Very prudent business strategy. Good luck.
I've been on vacation with my family and I'm only been using the 75 mm 1.2 and the 24 mm 1.8. both Viltrox. II know we haven't put a video out in a while but I'm thinking about making one about my experience. Been really enjoying using them!

Happy holidays with great pictures.
Bill, I currently own the Z50. This may be the solution for low light video's and photo's. How was the AF on this lens, similar to Nikon prime lens?
I don't do a ton of video other than the ones you see us make here on RUclips so I really can't speak to how it will do with fast moving subjects. For still photography I think it's absolutely fine. And the video stuff that I do it was also fine for that. It's definitely a little bit of an unknown entity but had more than half off the Nikon cost I think it's worth a shot.
I know Viltrox do a 23mm f1.4 for Canon EOS M Cameras, maybe you can ask them to lend you one and see how it goes.
That's not a bad idea. That would be a nice lens on the M50.
I have been eyeing these, I really am hopeful that Sigma comes out with something soon. My 18-35 Sigma Art was my favourite lens and it’s just not the same adapted (it’s great adapted for video though. I’d love to Viltrox come out with a 24-70.
The Viltrox will be about 50% of the Image Quality of my S Line Nikon 24-70 F2.8 >> the best 24-70 ever made by all brands .. You get what you pay for period
It seems like they are just doing primes right now but a 24 to 70 from then is something I would definitely like to try. I was impressed with everything about this lens.
Well I guess we will have to see on that but I don't think Nikon's 35 mm is twice as good as this 35 mm. This lens is every bit as good as my 50 mm 1.8 Nikon lens. I think this is a great alternative for someone who's on a budget.
Nikon S 50mm f1.8 vs Viltrox 35mm f1.8? If you could only keep one?
I would keep the Nikon. I think 50 mm is a little more versatile than 35. Now if you factor in the cost I might stay with the viltrox. For the price of the Nikon I can get the 35 and a fill trucks 85 1.8.
Has there been any issues since the new Z Firmware Update with this lens? thank you
No this lens works fine on my z62
Here's a good review on the 24mm Viltrox which you might find of interest:

Thanks!
Sadly almost all Viltrox reviewers, got theirs test lenses send/lend from Viltrox.
So this test lenses are definitely handpicked from Viltrox' QC - read some things about bad centering from some real world users...
What do you mean by centering?
@@BillEricPhotography
Sorry english is not my native language, but it is something like this phenomena:
"An optical centering error occurs when the optical axis of a lens differs from the mechanical axis. The optical axis is defined by the line connecting the two centers of curvatures of the spherical surfaces, and the mechanical axis is defined buy the ground edge of the lens."

Nice video but plz try to focus on the sound in next movie, it is to quiet, barly hear on my laptop speakers.
Make mine the Genuine article or I give up 45 years of Nikon photography
I don't get the loyalty to the name brands. Everybody has their preferences and I totally get that but I have used everything and I doubt if you look through my catalog of images you could tell me which ones were shot with a Nikon or without. Some of them that I've had over the years I think were better than the Nikon version. An example of that would be the 70 to 200 sigma that I have right now. I shot with the Nikon version and this sigma and everything about the sigma is better in my mind. Eric is more like you he prefers to have all of the Canon lenses that are made for his camera and it works out perfectly for him. I guess choice is good.
