Can you discuss what athletes (pro, college, and rec) can learn from this in terms of avoidance? The amazing athleticism and skill put him in a position to continue the play while moving with extreme momentum downfield. His awesome athleticism and keen skills allowed him to decide to try to slow down and cut back to the right to avoid the defender. But it was this decision combined with the massive energy and the angles he had to plant with that exceeded the maximum tension of his joint. Do you find that athletes need some guidance on how to avoid these type of injuries? As an aging athlete and referee, I know there are situations where my brain wants my body to do risky moves. My awareness of this enables me to attenuate the stopping or acceleration or turning rates to de-risk the maneuvers. Seahawk Tyler Lockett seems to navigate the field more carefully but no less skillfully or quickly since his injury a few years ago. His injury was contact induced, but it seems like when he is in fraught situations he ensures he secures the catch and falls in ways that reduce injury potential. Should young athletes be trained in injury avoidance?
This comment needs more visibility. I believe it is imperative that they be trained in injury avoidance. I believe artificial turf has a hand in this as well. I found an article saying that artificial turf seems to cause injuries more and this encompasses ALL sports that use it such as Soccer as well. Grass is ONLY worse in the condition in that it's not maintained properly. I think there should be some pushback against artificial turf and athletes need to be trained differently to avoid these injuries.
Same! So many ACL tears I’ve seen on live tv now just because of this where I see it and then end up seeing the next day or days later that they ended up tearing ACL
does a partial tear actually hurt more than torn? i hurt my knee really bad a week ago, and i couldn't walk like other people does when their acl got torn, hence the pain. Does that mean i hurt mine worse or less?
My doctor had told me that partial tears can be a lot more painful in the aftermath than a complete tear. Something about nerve endings still sending signals to the brain with a partial tear. Could be why he was able to walk seemingly painless afterwards and same with Tom Brady in ‘08.
about a week ago, i had a bad knee injury where i couldn't stand and fell right after the popping noise happened on my right knee.. I haven't checked to the MRI yet since it's still swelling right to this day. Since a torn acl can still walk right after it pops, is it safe to assume partial can't move after it pops? it's because i literally couldn't move because of the pain.. I don't know if people generally have different levels of pain receptors, but mine hurt a lot.. I'm really hoping that it's only a partial tear from the symptomps that i feel..
I was in the stadium and saw it happen live. I knew as soon as he went down it was an ACL tear, it was the same instant reaction as metchie. Hurts to think about how we could’ve done had they been healthy, but their recovery is more important than a game
My son walked around with a torn acl and meniscus for 3 weeks before he had surgery. It is definitely possible to walk around with an acl tear. And tbqh he never even complained about having any pain.
I had and ACL while water skiing. it was swollen big time I walk 3 miles home on it from my girl friends house afterwards. Funny thing is I have never had a operation on my knee and it took about about 6 months for it to heal up. I do feel it every once in a while but it has never slowed me down.
I tore the ACL in my left knee, along with the meniscus, when I was 25 and walked around for two months before surgery. Knee was not stable, but I was able to walk almost normally.
As someone who tore their ACL, I remember how it felt in real time. I watched this play and said immediately, “damn”… With that being said, same thing just happened to his teammate Metchie. Do you feel like the turf is unforgiving? ACL tears just seem to be so common on them.
Yeah some people can definitely walk after an ACL. My dad tore his ACL snow skiing and was able to get back up and ski down the mountain. By the time he got to the bottom it was the size of a grapefruit. It was only later he learned that he tore it

Really enjoy this vids and explanation, Brian! It's understood that misfortune will happen to athletes, but I wanted to ask you your opinion as to what you think they can do to strengthen knee joints, elbow joints and the ligaments within these areas to withstand taking on extreme pressure when making these cuts/shifts in movements? Is it just inevitable these injuries will happen, which lead to surgery and recovery? You mentioned a hope that Jameson is really "flexible", but I'm sure no athlete wants to base his future on that hope alone. Thanks.
