My welding teacher always told us to put our heads as close to the weld as possible. You will be amazed how much yr welds improve.

You did it! Not sure if this is as strong as it was previously but you will soon find out. Those galvanized carriage bolts are only grade 2 and are probably not strong enough. Replace those with grade 8 hex head bolts if you can and add some antiseize or grease since they are touching both steel and aluminum.

Hey, thanks for the tips! I went to Home Depot looking for stainless and found only galvanized in the size I needed. That was the last time I went to Home Depot looking for hardware because they failed to have what I needed too many times. More recently, I’ve been going to Ace Hardware for bolts instead bc the selection is WAY better. But I didn’t even know about grades yet. I will look into that right away. Much appreciated!

@@eagleray1 Fastenol will have stainless hardware. Menards in the midwest will also have it at a better price. You can also put in more bolts, but a higher grade will be more resistant to sheering off. This design has a lot of twist on those bolts - especially the bottom bolts.
If I were you, I would change back to the steel crossmember, bend it back, and weld that on. It would be much stronger than the aluminum and bolts.

@@123pwop Thanks! I’m a much better welder now than I was when I made this video, but we all gotta start somewhere.
