  • We have HUGE NEWS to share, so be sure to watch to the end to see our next big plans for the homestead...!
    In this episode of the Cabin Build Series, disaster strikes as extreme weather conditions and gale-force winds completely ruin all the hard work we put into the exterior cork cladding of our tiny house in the mountains.
    We get to work to repair the damage, as well as make a lot of progress on the cabin kitchen build, too.
    Watch as we build the plywood tiny house kitchen from scratch and install a sink to get one step closer to comfortable off grid living!

    A good vapor barrier is essential for protecting the integrity of your building materials. I love the idea of cork but personally, I would use it as inside insulation where water absorption can be managed. I have had too many bad corks in my long wine drinker life to be sold on this for the exterior surfaces.

    There's also the option of using insulation screws (with a wide washer) when fixing cork on to a non-rigid substrate like this - might be worth looking into if you have any issues in the future with delamination.

    Oh congrats!!!!! You look positively glowing!! Now i underdtand why ;)
    Glad you were able to fix the panels, it would have been disheartening having to redo it. You may have already looked into it, and decided agajnst it, but just in case, polyurethane is food grade and often used in wooden DIY kitchens. You need several coats but it will protect your wood the best and looks really, really good, as it brings the wood tones to life.
    Best wishes on the rest of the build. And gotta say, seeing the primer on the wall, the kitchen set-up it all already looks great!! Well done you three & Paco!!

    • @SmithsdaleFarm
      @SmithsdaleFarm  11 месяцев назад

      this would be sensible long term. For now we are going to stick with the glue and pin method. Once the weather had taken its toll we will have to change the MDF eventually I believe.

  • @ninemoonplanet
    @ninemoonplanet Год назад +1

    I worked with MDF and found it absorbs moisture, then expands and warps. Personally I don't like using it in any areas where it's open to moisture. If I did use it I would always add paint (acrylic), or at least some kind of moisture block.
    Maybe use an adhesive that's also a moisture resistant, instead of lime.

    • @SmithsdaleFarm

      It's ok for things like shelving in dry areas as long as it's sealed with paint. I have used it to put backs on cupboards, but it's usefulness is limited.

      Yes we are using solar for everything while we are there, we have a bluetti power bank - there should be a link somewhere if you're interested. For water, we only have rain catchment, so water storage is something we will be using a lot of in the future. I think the max you can build is 15m2 but we are 8m2 to be on the safe side & raise less questions.

    Hello, first of all, I would like to congratulate you on the completion of your beautiful little house and, of course, on your unborn children. But I'm sending you a little help that might help you get ahead in the future. In my opinion, gluing the cork would have been a better solution with this or a similar product.
    Soudabond Easy Genius Gun
    Polyurethane adhesive foam, for both absorbent and non-absorbent surfaces.
    If you have any professional questions online or would like my opinion, feel free to write to me. I have several years of experience in several construction trades, such as dry construction (plasterboarding), painting, plastering, masonry work, cold cladding. We try not to comment much on permits and permissions to be honest, because the rules differ so much from region to region, and even village to village in Spain. Just because we did something one way doesn’t mean it will be the same for everyone so we wouldn’t want to give advice or false hope for other projects.

    Shame about your cladding, and a lesson to all of us about spreading adhesive! If your current repair turns out insufficient, you might try adding some thin waterproof ply over the MDF to attach the cork to. Also, brushing on paint and varnish is fine, but I encourage you to experiment with mini-rollers. And finally, congratulations and best wishes for the next generation!
