One of the funniest musical action comedy movies ever made. RIP, John Belushi, Carrie Fisher, John Candy, Henry Gibson, Cab Galloway, James Brown, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Alan Rubin, Matt Murphy, Donald Dunn, Kathleen Freeman, and Charles Napier. We miss you. You made this film a fun ride.
I was 12 years old when in 1980 I kept nagging my parents to allow me to go see a movie because Princess Leia was in. They allowed me to go see it on my own... And from the very opening notes of Matt "Guitar" Murphy droning that A# and the section coming in The Blues Brothers changed my life. I took a hammer to m piggy bank that very night and bought the soundtrack the next day. I took up guitar lessons a week after and to this day 40 years later I'm still playing the blues. So thank Carrie Fisher for taking that role, without her I'd have become a square.
That line makes the end of the movie make a little more sense, to me. They actually are on a Mission from God! That's why the car survives the insanity and then just collapses. In my head cannon anyway
Belushi and Aykroyd DID do great things together. The “Blues Brothers” got their start on Saturday Night Live as a skit. It was so popular they took it on the road and even recorded several albums. ‘Rubber Biscuit” was one of their hits. Aykroyd said he wanted to do this movie and get as many old time blues musicians as he could in it before they passed. Just to remind folks just how awesome they were. Cheers
Rubber Biscuit, Soul Man, Sweet Home Chicago, Hey Bartender, I Don't Know, Flip, Flop & Fly... just some really great music. A lot of people think they were just a joke band, but their first album went double platinum and they sold out tours.
"I'm sure there are other famous singers in this movie, but so far I've only recognized James Brown" while the Queen Aretha Franklin is singing ... that made me want to cry.
Someone may have mentioned it but the mall they filmed the chase scene in had already permanently closed and the production crew actually put most of the stores together just to shoot that scene. It was called the Dixie Square Mall.
@@Rodshark75 The mall was never really used after 1979. Except as dug den, gang turf, and a favorite hangout for homeless. There were attempts to use the property for a few years but all failed. In 1985 a police station was constructed on part of the lot, but they ran into discovery of massive foundation issues. The mall was actually the mall was in the ownership of the local school district as they used it for schooling in 1979 when the schools were finishing construction of a new building which went over schedule. That summer Landis leased the mall, staged all the shops (which were vacant and had minimal signs). Then they left it partially destroyed (cleaned up, but with the signs intact, most of the storefronts having been knocked out, and the floors heavily damaged). The district sued for excess damages to the property, but then later dropped the case. The city of Harvey abandoned it, and it was left to rot from 1981. It became a crime/gang den. At least one documented murder was committed there, but there were believed others (police finding bodies there was not unusual). In 2006 some contractor tried to deal with the place, they demolished one department store but that just made more structural issues in the process and abandoned the rest of it. In 2012 Illinois State and the City of Harvey were actually able to use federal relief funds from Hurricane Ike (is a very convoluted way) to demolish the buildings.
@@Rodshark75 No it wasn’t. The mall was basically locked up after filming was completed. They want to reopen it but the place was trashed by shooting the movie there.
Saw them at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia,MD. They weren't just a novelty act,John and Dan took the Blues Brothers thing seriously when it came to the music and they were actually pretty good.
Dan got John interested in blues music. John wanted to do a bit performing a blues song on Saturday Night Live. Lorne Michaels said they couldn't do a musical number, they booked singers. They could only sing if it was a sketch. There were be costumes in the wardrobe closet, so they created the Blues Bees and that was enough of a sketch to make it in air. The audience loved the performance. John and Dan created The Blues Brothers and started performing in clubs around Chicago. Now that they were a musical act Lorne let them perform on SNL. They released a couple albums. Then the idea for the movie came up.
When Cab Calloway transforms the stage during Minnie The Moocher (one of his signature songs back in his day) it represents when music plays, magic happens. We see it whenever people start dancing
So few people know him today. Sad. My favorites are his version of St. James Infirmary and him teaming up with the Nicholas Brothers to do Jumpin' Jive.
In the 90’s my preteen kids saw a skit of this at a baseball game and asked about it. So we went and rented a copy of the movie and watched it. The kids loved the whole thing especially picking out actors they knew and asking about the ones they didn’t. My oldest daughter, who is now in her thirties, will still sometimes start going “Hut, Hut, Hut,” when she’s doing something and doesn’t know she’s being watched.
Cab Calloway ( the guy just after the Nun scene) was a big band leader from the 30"s/40/50's era. He'd be a band you would see in the old detective movies when they ended up at a night club.
One of my favourite movies as a kid. My parents are big blues fans and I have some fond memories of them introducing me to this movie and all the great musicians in it. I literally destroyed the ost record by playing it too much. As an adult I'm mostly amazed at the sheer amount of vehicular destruction that takes place. :P It was fun reliving it with you guys!
Thanks for a fun reaction! There are three cameos that are usually missed by younger reactors. One was already brought up: Joe Walsh was the prisoner who jumped on the table and started dancing at the end. The other two are: Chaka Khan as the choir singer they focus on a couple of times in the James Brown church scene, and I'm pretty sure that's Harold Ramis in an uncredited non-speaking cameo when all the cops and soldiers rush in to the state building and ask the two guards if they've seen two guys dressed in black.
Harold Ramis is not listed on IMDB as being in The Blues Brothers, but it could have been uncredited. In any case, that cop actually does look quite a bit like him, so could be!
One of my favorite films of all times. Fun fact, this movie was in the Guinness book for largest car crash in a movie, a record it held until Blues Brothers 2000.
Thanks very much for the reaction. Some trivia: The Ray Charles outside dance was done in freezing weather, but people made it look like summer. The car was supposed to have magical properties due to a large magnet above the garage. Dan Aykroyd wrote a very long screenplay, but it was edited down a lot by Landis. The Blues Brothers was a musical skit on Saturday Night Live in the 1970's. This is Aykroyd's backstory for the band. Paul Schaffer was the band leader on SNL but couldn't be in this movie. The stunt crew leaders had to prove the Ford Pinto was airworthy and wouldn't sail in the wrong direction before they dropped it.
jameshenner5831, actually, the stunt folks had to prove that the Pinto was NOT airworthy, specifically that it was not aerodynamic.....it needed to fall straight down, but the FAA was concerned that it might tip to one angle and glide a bit sideways, hitting the ground in some unintended area.
I'll never forget the first time I saw Blues Brothers. It was a sunny afternoon and I was walking around town and needed to kill some time. So I decided to go to the movies. I saw the title of the movie and was captivated because I was very into blues and funk at the time. I was excited about the artists in this movie and had to laugh my ass off at the comedy scenes. How cool was that. I missed every other joke because I was laughing so hard. Afterwards I told my friends about this movie and no one would believe me that there was a movie with Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles and James Brown and more together. A few days later, we went to the movies together again to prove that I wasn't a liar or an idiot. I can't even count how many times I've seen that movie since then. It is one of my all-time favorite movies and is one of my personal top five films.
In 1980, Carrie was briefly engaged to Canadian actor and comedian Dan Aykroyd, who proposed to her on the set of their film The Blues Brothers. She said: "We had rings, we got blood tests, the whole shot. But then I got back together with Paul Simon."
One of the absolute classics. I saw the beeped-for-TV version of this as a very young child, since my musician parents consider this “music history”. It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World is a great comparison!
It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World is one of our favorite films, so it's great to see a movie swing for those high fences when it comes to stunts and car chases.
I went to the theater to see this. So many musical stars. Cab Calloway, James Brown, John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin....the list goes on. So many destroyed cars. This was the most expensive movie made at that time. They went through even more cars than "Smoky and the Bandit". That was Joe Namath asking for Miss Piggy in the toy store. I'd love to have that Grad Prix Carrie Fisher was driving. The girl that was waiting for Elwood at the hotel was Twiggy, the British singer.
This movie is close to my heart because of the nostalgia factor. I was born and raised in Chicago, and I can call out pretty much all of the locations, especially the downtown ones that you can barely see due to them speeding through the Loop.
The song everyone thinks of as the 'Blues Brothers Theme' (the one you sing a bit of at 1:57) is actually a slightly upbeat instrumental version of a song by Otis Redding called "I Can't Turn You Loose" (Johnny Winter also does a great version of the song as well)
The music for which was written by Steve Cropper, the rhythm guitarist in the Blues Brothers band. It was a regular riff used in many Booker T and the MGs tunes, of which BB bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn was also a member.
The nun always makes me think about my husband's stories of Catholic school. There was an Irish nun named Sister Rosario who was not to be trifled with
The girl at the gas station is Twiggy and the first prisoner to jump up when they are performing at the end is Joe Walsh from the Eagles. Also this movie held/holds the record for most vehicles wrecked in a movie
Record for car wrecks only surpassed by 'Blues Brothers 2000', still a pretty good soundtrack, film not so good but still worth a watch. Hi from the UK.
the elevator music is s song called Girl From Ipanema. They actually used to play the very same kind of music over the PA at Wal-Mart in the early 1980’s .
Dan Aykroyd actually proposed to Carrie Fisher when they were making this movie, and she said yes. They were briefly engaged then called it off and broke up.
For 2 years, this movie had the record for most cars trashed in a movie at 104 cars. Amazingly, no one was apparently injured filming the climatic chase scene, although Belushi did injure himself riding a kid's skateboard just before filming the concert! The record was broken by The Junkman which destroyed 150 cars and a plane 2 years later. The record is currently held by Transformers 3 at 532 cars (coincidentally also filmed in Chicago)
That ain’t Chicago in the beginning. That Statesville prison in Joliet. It is closed now, but they use it events. My dad worked there when I was a kid.
You got my Cheez Whiz, boy? 😂 Thank you for watching this classic. Old fans like me often have trouble with the sequel Blues Brothers 2000, but I really enjoyed it. More amazing music fills it. Have you watched Joe vs the Volcano yet? I think hbomax has it streaming. I think y'all would love it! Tom Hanks in his earlier days.
@@LatetotheParty the entire film is my comfort place, from the soundtrack, to the symbolism, the writing, the casting, the side-stepping of tropes you might expect.... It would be such a pleasure to see y'all experience it for the first time. ☺️ Tom and Meg are magic together, but this is their most fairy tale-esque surrealist adventure by far.
John Belushi was originally going to be cast as Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters but died before filming, Onion head later named Slimer was a tribute to Belushi
Great review and great channel. It's comforting to see people who genuinely know what what they are talking about regarding pop culture. You are both clearly big fans. Fun Fact - The young boy that tried to steal the guitar from Ray's is Argyle from Die Hard.
The shorter of the two guards escorting Jake across the Collins Street prison (yes, I am a Joliet native-that prison is one of several in town, so we distinguish it with its address) is played by the Jesuit priest who was my drama professor at Marquette University several years later. “Gerald Walling, S.J.” is directly above “John Belushi” in the final credits.
not sure if this has already been commented or not... but the Mall they were driving through was slated to be demolished and the production company asked if they could delay the destruction so they could film that scene... the "clean up" was a blasting crew fins finishing off what Jake and Elwood started!!! hahahaha
Another fun fact: The police dispatcher who says the use of unnecessary violence has been approved is the gangster from the black and white movie Kevin is watching in Home Alone. They also really were going close to 120 mph through downtown Chicago too. John Landis thought people would notice if they filmed it slower and sped the film up So he just did it for real.
I saw this on its opening Friday, and is one of the most memorable nights of my life. A friend and I had driven from Portland to Seattle to compete in the Friday night bicycle races at the velodrome, but they got rained out. So we headed downtown looking for something to do. We saw the marquee at the Coliseum Theater, and got in just in time. The theater was packed and raucous. We had a great time. It was a few years before I became a real blues fan and understood just how important all those musicians were. The Blue Brothers set me off on my blues journey. My first blues concert was John Lee Hooker. Sadly I never got to see Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles or any of those other legends, but I have seen BB King, Etta James, Albert Collins, Pinetop Perkins, Charles Brown and many others.
WOW! That had to be the most exciting thing to ever happen. I saw the movie in Chicago and seeing it being filmed in many places it took me on an great ride. I had no idea the movie would be as good as it was.
We lived in a suburb of Chicago when this was filmed...downtown was shut down on a Sunday while filming the chase scenes. Always loved this movie and do rerun views often. Does not get old!❤😊
The blues bros dance in the middle - not the beginning and not the end - but the middle section of the dinner scene, never fails to bring a smile to my face….as does Chaka Khan
John Lee is one of the greatest American musician of all time. His influence on blues, r&b, and rock music in amazing and undeniable. But he was around (mostly) before the era of the music video so most people, even music fans, don't know what he looks or sounds like.
I really enjoy this movie thank you so much for reacting to it. Plus what most people don't realize to later is it John Landis actually slug in a loving tribute to many of the icons of rhythm and blues music Without people realize it. Because many of the icons in this including Cab Calloway, Johnny Lee Hooker.Ray Charles, James Brown, and Areatha Franklin are all gone now. This one of the only vehicles to see them perform for future generations.
Robert: If you're going to shoot in a prison, use it. Also Robert: No wonder it's 2.5 hours, it's taking forever to walk through the prison.😂 Vanessa: Next they'll be jumping over rooftops. Movie: 😎
The Blues Brothers "theme song" is actually a combination of 2 classic soul songs. "Time is tight" by Booker T & The MG's and "I can't turn you loose" by Otis Redding.
I always feel old when I see a reactor who doesn't recognize any of the musicians in this movie. Good thing they list them at the end. You already recognized some of the non-musician cameos, like Frank Oz and Paul Reubens. The woman in the gas station was 60s supermodel Twiggy and the guy in the sauna was Steve Lawrence. All of the band were well known session musicians at the time- Matt "guitar" Murphy, Donald "duck" Dunn, etc. They've all played with the who's who of rock and blues musicians. The mall chase scene was, at the time, the most expensive scene ever filmed. They found an abandoned mall and fixed it up and filled it with stores, then proceeded to destroy it. And, only because you brought up the French Connection chase scene, I heard that was done without permits. They just set up their cameras and filmed, then left before the cops showed up, so all the "extras" you see are real people.
They actually *did* drop a car from a helicopter (over an empty/undeveloped area) and filmed it. They even had to get a certification from civil aviation authorities that stated that the car would generate no lift force and wouldn't glide or drift off target,
The BEST movie soundtrack EVER!!! I must have been about 8 or 9 when I first saw the Blues Brothers and I was hooked to the music, so much so I went out and got the soundtrack on cd and started buying old blues records. This held the record for the most cars wrecked on screen until a movie in the late 90s beat it by one vehicle, that movie was Blues Brothers 2000 😆. When ever me and my best mate used to go on road trips we would start them with “It’s a 106 miles to Chicago….” 😂
Blues Brothers, 2000 which is the sequel was filmed after John Belushi and Cab Calloway passed away, so Cab Calloway, Junior starred in it, and John goodman took Jake’s place
I'm new to your channel, and very impressed at the knowledge you exhibit with the people and tunes you recognize. But you might have missed that Cab Calloway is the orphanage maintenance man. I think that John Lee Hooker was the street musician. Singer Steve Lawrence was Sline, the agent. 1960s top model Twiggy was the girl at the gas station.
They were on Saturday night live first, Dan Aykroyd, and Jim Belushi as The Blues Brothers. They did so well with their music and their great band and they became popular.
At the time of filming, Chicago was in the process of replacing its entire fleet of police cruisers. Joe Landis & co. bought them all, for the express purpose of smashing the whole bunch during the chase scene.
😅At 37:40, when you said. "Now it's the Chase", cracked me up. As I knew you had no idea how much of anderstatement that was. I could even quote Crocodile Dundee and say (in regards to every other chase scene) that's not a chase scene. THIS is a CHASE SCENE.
Well this was a fun reaction to watch after a shitty week at work. Glad the two of you enjoyed the film. I have my dad to thank for introducing me to it, one of my all time favourites.
Blues Brothers was a tribute to the Blues which was dying down and almost forgotten in the late 70's. This movie help revitalize the music we called The Blues...Blues, Jazz and Rock and Roll produced the Rhythm and Blues gender of music which lead to Soul which lead to Funk which lead the mess we call Hip Hop ( music without musicians or singers)...
Yes Dan and John BOTH wanted to preformed as musicians, and actually had a band before this movie. John Bulushi and Dan an the band played several shows which lead to this movie.
Fun fact The Maul was due for demolition so they set the scene to do some of the demolition for them while filming the movie. The Cop car pile up and chases in this movie were a lot like Smokey and the Bandit

I love watching people discover this movie for the first time! It is a classic - than you for sharing this!
The guy in the steam room was Steve Lawrence of the Steve Lawrence and Edie Gourmet duo.
I grew up in Harvey where the Mall scene was filmed.
@@kwerk2011 Yes! I recognised it as "Time Is Tight".
The nun always makes me think about my husband's stories of Catholic school. There was an Irish nun named Sister Rosario who was not to be trifled with
The Blues Brothers were originally a skit on Saturday Night Live. It was so popular they turned it into an actual act.
the coolest part of this movie was the fact that three, maybe even four generations of music was highlighted!
That one scene during the car chase through chicago when they drive by, that speed was insanely fast! No fast forward effect, real driven high speed!
the elevator music is s song called Girl From Ipanema. They actually used to play the very same kind of music over the PA at Wal-Mart in the early 1980’s .
Bullet, Smokey and the Bandit, Hooper, The Hunter, Speed Zone, Cannonball Run…. Great movies with great stunts and car chases..
Dan Aykroyd actually proposed to Carrie Fisher when they were making this movie, and she said yes. They were briefly engaged then called it off and broke up.
Wow there were actually engaged frfr. It makes sense anyone wouldnt know about it since their engagement was briefly
😂
Thank you for watching this classic.
We've never seen Joe vs the Volcano.
@@LatetotheParty Gotta watch it. Its a fun whimsical flick. It also is the first pairing of Hanks and Meg Ryan.
@@rubensalvador9422 I had no idea this was their 1st pair-up 🥰 That makes it even better imho.
The Cheez Whiz line is honestly one of my favorite lines in all of moviedom.
All of the Blues Brothers albums are great, not just the soundtrack. I listened to them all through college.
Curtis is played by legendary blues singer Cab Calloway.
I forgot how fun this movie is. I was 9 when I first saw it on TV. Good to refresh my memory.
Happy you could refresh your memory with us!
Favorite line from this movie, being a musician: "What kind of music do you usuaully have here?" "We got [both] country and western..."
this movie is one of a kind - there will never be another like it. i watch it about twice a year and it never fails to please.
"Fast and Furious ain't got shit on the Blues Brothers!" TRUTH!
Seeing this in its theatrical release was an awesome experience. So much talent in one movie. So much outrageousness in one movie.
one cameo name I haven't seen mentioned yet, John Lee Hooker with his distinctive bass growl. man is an absolute Blues legend. RIP.
John Lee is one of the greatest American musician of all time. His influence on blues, r&b, and rock music in amazing and undeniable. But he was around (mostly) before the era of the music video so most people, even music fans, don't know what he looks or sounds like.
First time seeing the scene where Dan Akroyd’s character quits his job. I got 2 copies of the movie. Thanks for finding this version.
Also Robert: No wonder it's 2.5 hours, it's taking forever to walk through the prison.😂
Vanessa: Next they'll be jumping over rooftops.
Movie: 😎
🤣
Yeah, I cracked up when she said that. My city. Love it.
They even had to get a certification from civil aviation authorities that stated that the car would generate no lift force and wouldn't glide or drift off target,
And to get that certification they first had to drop a different car.
That mall was already on schedule to be demolished, so Landis was lucky to have found it at the right time!
39:51 “next they’ll be flying off rooftops”
Knowing what’s going to happen to the Nazi made this so funny
Did you notice Carrie Fisher's salon name?
Curl up and Dye 😂
Blues Brothers, 2000 which is the sequel was filmed after John Belushi and Cab Calloway passed away, so Cab Calloway, Junior starred in it, and John goodman took Jake’s place
I'm new to your channel, and very impressed at the knowledge you exhibit with the people and tunes you recognize. But you might have missed that Cab Calloway is the orphanage maintenance man. I think that John Lee Hooker was the street musician. Singer Steve Lawrence was Sline, the agent. 1960s top model Twiggy was the girl at the gas station.
The Blues Brothers were also the main attraction of the 1997 Super Bowl halftime show along with James Brown and ZZ Top.
Such a great movie with so many great talented people!! Definitely a mood lifter. 💗💗
They were on Saturday night live first, Dan Aykroyd, and Jim Belushi as The Blues Brothers. They did so well with their music and their great band and they became popular.
they met in Toronto at Second City before moving to New York for SNL.
@@scalefree thank you!
At the time of filming, Chicago was in the process of replacing its entire fleet of police cruisers. Joe Landis & co. bought them all, for the express purpose of smashing the whole bunch during the chase scene.
This movie set a record for most cars in a crash. Which it held until the sequel was released in 1998
Me & my brothers grew up watching this film. Adore it so much.
Under the Rainbow (1981) another comedy that should be right up your alley.
Who wants an orange whip?
✋️
🤚
Landis was on a heck of a roll back then , so many greats!
One of the best movie soundtracks ever.
The actor who played the kid who tried to steal from Ray's, is the same guy who played the limo driver in Die Hard.
a true "timeless" classic as it STILL holds up 40+ years later.
I saw it when it first came out in the theater, it was a RIOT the audience was really into it
The Great Cab Calloway is in this . That line " Get Me My Cheese Whiz Boy ? " Is not only famous from this movie , but used in Family Guy 🧀😂🤣.
It held the record for the longest car chase, most cars used and most cars destroyed for YEARS. And remember all real stunts, no CGI!!
And the band are genuinely some of the best session musicians in all of early R&B
Well this was a fun reaction to watch after a shitty week at work. Glad the two of you enjoyed the film. I have my dad to thank for introducing me to it, one of my all time favourites.
Hope your week ends on a good note. Happy we could help take your mind of things! 💜💙
And yes, Chopper is indeed a psycho. 🤣
Curtice Is The Legendary *CAB CALLOWAY*
This movie is a Love Letter To the Legends of Blues Motown and R&B
You get me my cheese wiz boy!” I’ve used that about 1000 times over the last 40 plus years
Blues Brothers was a tribute to the Blues which was dying down and almost forgotten in the late 70's.
For years this film held the world record for most cars destroyed in a single movie.
That car loved Elwood, and gave its life for him!
Until the very end!
@@LatetotheParty I had a ford escort, and the life of that car was great!
The last I’ve heard this is the biggest selling blues album of all time 🎉
One of the greatest films of all time.
Oooh yes!!! Loved the Blues Brothers!
Fun fact The Maul was due for demolition so they set the scene to do some of the demolition for them while filming the movie. The Cop car pile up and chases in this movie were a lot like Smokey and the Bandit
