Another great win here for Danny Sullivan and the Penske team which kept him in first place for the CART championship. Nazareth was fun track to watch these Indy cars race at.
This was Dick Simon's final race. Simon would turn 55 in just two days and after triggering a serious crash at Pocono that took out Mario Andretti and Danny Sullivan several of the drivers convinced the chief steward (Wally Dallenbach) not to allow Dick to start. But John Caponigro - who was the CEO of CART at the time - overruled Dallenbach because the starting field was already very small at just 20 cars.
Once paved Nazareth was a great track for high downforce Indy Cars, it must have been terrific being there. So were Phoenix and Homestead before the reconfigurations for stock cars that need high bank constant radius corners. The features on Danny Sullivan and Rick Mears are worth cutting and re-releasing on their own right, alas Speedvision, the only network inclined to do so and staffed with people from racing is gone just like Nazareth.
Very! The next race in Laugna Seca, ESPN would state he was killed in plane crash just after Derrick Walker left Penske/ Sullivan team to take after Porsche,

It is eerie to see Al Holbert interviewed at 1:31:58 as he was killed in a plane crash exactly five days after this interview.
I watched him win with co-driver Derek Daly in the Lowenbrau Porsche 962 in San Antonio Texas, that was my first big league racing experience.
