We have a darling boy we’ve named Winston .. he came from a rescue. He is a year old and we’ve had him 6 weeks. He’s already learned sit, stay, break/release, down, up, car (to go on a ride which he LOVES), to “go back” and is now house trained. He’s learning to respond to a whistle and his name for recall. He is even learning “calm” which helps him settle. We are getting ready to work on heeling - wish us luck!
He IS a chewer! He’s a lover, a huge cuddler, he’s sharp as a tack, a total stubborn rascal when he doesn’t get his way and is always up for a walk, a treat or to be brushed. We adore him and already cannot imagine our life without him!
All the best to you and your sweet wheatie!

Dude I was literally very similar, except he was originally my grand parent’s dog but they gave him to us when I was 5 and he was a year old (they couldn’t really handle the dog and his high energy compared to us), and he was with me until he died when I was 18, just a few days before my senior high school prom.

Spot on! Our boy Max is 3 and exactly like Cooper. Sweet, funny and friendly. 2 speeds ...zoomies and sleep. Lots of sleep. Wheatens run hot, so our snuggles are brief. Mostly he will lay on our feet or close enough to touch us. Great city dog too.FRIENDLY! People or pets he loves them all. Gentle with kids and older folks too. Love this breed.❤

My first Wheatie boy, Walter, was like Cooper. Walter had Cushing. After 14 years of enjoying him and his capers, I adopted a Wheaton again. Sean is an 11 y.o. party boy. He became a blind diabetic dog with pancreatitis…challenging, but manageable once he got insulin and I bought washable pads. It’s hard because I’m disabled and am 71. I also have a Yorkie, Tucker, and Bijoux, who is a Glen of Imaal terrier. Great dynamics for security and companionship, but sometimes Sean may bump into them and get warned he’s invading personal space. His health is well managed by using Gentle Giants dog food products. He was 34 lbs and now is about 26 lbs. I love my terriers, and try to give them short hair cuts every 3-6 months. Baths & brushing more often. Cooper is lucky to have such a great family who appreciates his sweet nature and activity needs. May you all be blessed to party with your fur baby!

I have a 6 month old Whoodle who seems to pant a lot and and her belly always feels warm. Glad to see this seems normal of the breed. I have read that Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are better suited in colder climates. Seems logical since they are a Irish breed.

I just got one, Tanner Whiskey. At night before we go to bed, I sing the clean up song and we put the toys back in his toy box. He’s almost 6 months old. Super smart. I had a Wheaten years ago, Barney. The best dog ever. He was almost more like another person rather than a dog. He was very good at reading your expressions and interpreting what was going to happen next. He loved tummy scratches and going on trips. He was sensitive to loud noises and would bolt under duress, so I kept him under positive control at all times when not in an enclosed area. He was such a good boy. Miss him so much...

WE picked up a Wheaton who was abandoned when she got too old in the puppy mill, and she's now a wonderful part of our family. She's so smart and accepting, but a bit timid even after having her with us this last year. She only recently began playing "chase me, chase you with our older Yorkie." She loves to get out of the house and go for rides in the van. Sadly, whenever she hears puppies whining on TV she gets anxious and runs for at the TV to listen. I'm sure she misses all of the puppies stolen from her over the years while being bred by a selfish human using her body to make money! So far, we can't cuddle with her but she loves for me to stroke her head when she's in her bed at night before wishing her good night, and likes me to baby talk to her. She sleeps by my chair and almost never leave my sight - it's as if she has to know moment to moment exactly where I am all the time. I think she likes it here with us now, and I pray she can overcome her fear of other people. She deserves a loving family and we're trying our best to help her become a normal bog as best we can. The thing is, she is not 'My' dog, she's my son's dog. He has PTSD and takes care of her really well. But she hasn't bonded with any of us yet. Maybe in time. We love her and will do anything we can for her. She's just a fantastic dog who came from a bad situation and doesn't trust humans at all.

My Baxter is exactly like Cooper:)
He doesn’t chew on our things, ( never did, not even when he was a puppy ) He is not the morning-dog. I learned him not to jump on ppl, he loves our guests.
When we are on the walk he is only interested in dogs ( not other animals in the forest or ppl ). Full of energy, he runs very fast! But he also enjoys to chill on the couch or bed all day :)
He is not a big eater, so I can’t trick him w treats, he has his own personality, very stubborn 😂😂 we had some problems with the ears ( black earwax which doesn’t want to go away) but healthy, happy and goofy.
    Cooper is super cute 🥰🐾🐾

I had 2 through my childhood, they are an amazing family dog. Small enough for a couple of kids to walk, their shed is minimal, and they're energetic but not insane. Very playful, mine loved burrowing into pillow forts, going for a wagon ride/walk, or leaping into a lake.
I will say... They are more stubborn than most dog breeds. If you want the perfect trick learning dog this is not the breed lol. I could never actually train mine to properly fetch. She would get super excited to chase the ball... And then get bored after a few throws. But she was very trainable with interactions and general obedience. They're kinda like a very friendly cat in their demeanor, they certainly think for themselves. Always upbeat and excited, and very much the opposite of labs or retrievers.

Love your dog and appreciate the video! We adopted one accidentally four months ago from our local shelter, they thought he was a poodle mix. He's about a year-and-a-half old now and is full of personality but you're right, not a morning dog. He is a mama's boy and does love snuggling with both my husband and I when he's ready, on his terms. And he looked so much like a Cooper that we named him Cooper! He hasn't been quite as good as yours as he's chewed scissors, a remote-control, and spatulas but does love his dog toys too. We have a standard poodle as his playmate and they have a blast together.

Great video! And its so funny how the wheatens have their specific character. We have a 6 month old wheaten called Potter and also a 2,5 year old wheaten friend. I was always been a cat person, although I grew up with dogs and love them, but we have allergies in the family so my children started asking for a dog and after a long time thanking about it and getting to know a wheaten we settled on adding a wheaten to our family and I do not regret that decision he is the best! He is a good learner but of course he can be naughty sometimes 😁 he loves activities but is also weary calm in between. They are so friendly and really become a part of the family 🥰 I would really recommend a wheaten as a family dog!

We have our own wheaten, Claire. We got her when she turned 4. We don't think she'd been properly socialized and probably had spent way too much time in a kennel. When she came to live with us, she was terrified (especially of men) and didn't know how to walk up and down stairs. I found out about a year later the people from whom we bought her had been shut down by the SPCA. She used to chew on shoes, cords, earphones, shoelaces...probably severe anxiety. She is much better now and has adapted nicely to the princess lifestyle. She is still pretty nervous if there are cars or other people/dogs when we go walking. Her canine sister, Britney, is a miniature schnauzer...and Britney is the BOSS.

Sheldon, how could you render poor Cooper naked like that? Wheatens are shaggy beasts and that is their charm. A bit more brushing is perhaps in order. It is important to remember that they can also be extremely good guard dogs. My Winston has HUGE fangs, as do all Wheatens, and would not hesitate one micro-second to use them to protect me. They are also tenacious terriers. They were badger (and other vermin) dogs and have infinite patience and commitment when stalking something. I always say that between him and my 100 lb. American Bulldog, he would be the first to get to an intruder, even though my bully is the one everyone is most intimidated by. (He is actually the biggest baby in the world and would be happy to let Winnie take the lead.) It is those eyes that get you! So soulful. Irresistible. My only foster fail in 30 years of rescue.

Also used to guard the farm due to its massive size when fully grown

I have a wheaten Terrier also, she is 9. She is absolutely identical to yours in look and mannerisms! I do the puppy cut as well and love watching it grow out. Unfortunately as it gets long it’s just so hard to maintain. She gets cut every 3 months also. Beautiful dog man!! Thanks for the video!

It’s like you were describing my Wheaten! She is so lazy in the morning, but every night she has what we call her “witching hour”, when she’ll stare at us, pant, and sprint around in circles at the slightest opportunity. Also we have managed to teach her a few tricks, but she will only do them when she thinks we have treats- and when she thinks you have treats she will just go and do every trick she knows in front of you until you give one. Also, same thing for the food, she will slowly graze on her kibble throughout the day

so I got Cooper from a puppy store in Columbia, MD. sort of regret not going through a reputable groomer because I later learned the unfortunate reality of puppy retail stores... but I can't regret it entirely because I wouldn't have Cooper in my life :) there are so many tips for new dog owners! I'm sure there are some good videos on youtube on in! good luck!

I have a Wheaten named Ted, and he is a mess! Definitely a mama’s baby, under my feet or on my lap every chance he gets. We take him everywhere with us, because he gets separation anxiety. He jumps, or tries to jump on everyone who comes in the door. If we ever got robbed he would just let the crooks in as long as they gave him a good pet first.

There must be an Ur-terrier with all the traits of the terrier. Our dog, a Welsh, also hated cuddling and slept most of the time. When he got his haircut it was like having a different dog , so much smaller and looking more like a schnauzer. Treats were a great and possibly the only motivator. My dog passed away after 17 great years and my heart is still broken.

I just lost my Wheaten on the 17th due to kidney failure. Her name was Ellie Mae and she was only 5 years old. If you own a Wheaten you MUST take them to the vet and have them check their blood for kidney issues. I just wish I knew this before because Ellie was EVERYTHING to my family and it's been devastating.
