I totally agree with you! Ever since people started talking about tropes and trigger warnings, I feel like the mystery of an unread book is spoiled. For me, less is better.
I have a great Historical Fiction rec for you. Our book club is currently reading Looking for Jane by Heather Marshall. It is a very timely novel about women struggling to gain autonomy over their own bodies. I think you would enjoy it in your new era of exploring HF.
Two of my favorite contemporary fiction books with romance elements are Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? and Mika in Real Life. They’re such sweet and touching stories about navigating adulthood, self-discovery, familial challenges and exploring love along the way. I loved these books and think about them often ❤
I fell in love with historical fiction after reading House of Eve. I’ve also read Yellow wife by her and loved it. I have the Davenports by Krystal Marquis on my TBR.
Take My Hand was my first foray into historical fiction. And I love it. Been looking for black youtubers who read it, so thank you. House of Eve is great!! Sadeeqa had a few!!! The Vanishing Half is another one. And I just finished the Personal Librarian.
@@ShawnaciSchroeder ooh nice!! I’ll def check that out!! I also wanna just say thank you. My sister introduced me to your videos and I just appreciate your authenticity and genuineness!!! Ive been looking for spaces where I can feel seen and you offer that! So, thank you!!
Francine rivers Redeeming Love is the best romance I’ve ever read.. but technically it’s a historical fiction. I was taken by surprise by how good that book was.
Stepping into a new genre is wonderful. I started reading fantasy last year and I love it. There are different types of fantasy so I am having fun discovering what I like and what authors I like. It does not help my TBR to start reading another genre. I definitely have to get back to reading historical fiction and I need to get back to my reading being diverse each month and not just one or two genres.
Historical fiction recs: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah The Frozen River by Ariel Lahon Kindred by Octavia Butler (black author!)
Necessary Lies!!! Diane Chamberlain, yes yes yes!!!!!! I have been waiting for you to pick one of hers up. So excited. There are even better ones by her! ❤️ I think she always has an authors notes with the details you'll want about her writing the story.

My favorite historical fiction author who has been writing for over twenty years is Beverly Jenkins who is a black author. All of her books are good but there two books that I like the most which are called “Indigo” and “Forbidden” Both have a little spice but not too much. The books are respectful. Try it you won’t regret it.
I love historical fiction one of my favorite genre. Check out Bernice L. McFadden she is amazing “praise song for the butterflies” is one of my favorites ❤❤love your content you are such an inspiration
HIGHLYYYY recommend Amy Harmon for historical romance (especially What The Wind Knows) and Sara Ackerman (historical fiction set in Hawai'i and also has romance!, especially The Codebreaker's Secret or The Uncharted Flight of Olivia West)!! Also recommend American Queen by Vanessa Miller during post-civil war South and freed slaves who set up a kingdom :)

I recommend “Sugar” and the sequel “This Bitter Earth” by Bernice L. McFadden. I don’t see many people talk about these books but they are excellent. Historical fiction + black woman author.
Looking forward to your thoughts on Writers and Lovers! It’s definitely out of your comfort zone but I think you’ll be glad you read it whether you ended up loving it or now
I convinced myself that I’d hate historical fiction, but then I read “The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah last week, It shattered me. I cried more times than I can count, but through the heartbreak, I fell completely in love with her writing and the way she told the story. Now, I have three historical fiction books on my TBR for October.
My all-time favorite black historical fictions are the following: The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones, and Angel of Greenwood. Harrowing love stories. I read those in 2020 and 2021 and, to this day, the memories of reading both of these books are still very vivid. I can't wait to hear your thoughts if you happen to get your hands on em.
I’m sooooo happy that you have entered my genres, historical and contemporary fiction! Necessary Lies is on my TBR too. Another booktuber recommended it. These are my recommendations for historical fiction or contemporary fiction: An American Marriage (romance element and black author), Yellow Wife (black author; author also wrote The House of Eve), Take My Hand (black author; think I saw that you recently purchased this one in a book haul), Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Lessons in Chemistry (romance element), Black Cake (romance element and black author), The Girl With the Louding Voice (black author), Pachinko, The Vanishing Half (black author), Homegoing (black author), and Before We Were Yours.

Love your videos! My recommendation for Historical Fiction/ Literary Fiction: The Black Rose by Tananarive Due (African American Author). This book is fabulous and has great depth! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📚💚
Some historical fiction is based on actual historical events. Others are just set in past decades. I usually look to see if there is an Author’s Notes. If so they will usually let you know if it really happened, what inspired them, their research etc. I haven’t read The House of Eve but I did read Yellow Wife by the same author. It’s really good
Hi, Miss Shawnaci. I wish I could erase what I learned about America's usage of sterilization from my mind; but it's lodged into my brain how evil people can be over something as small as an eighth of am inch means so much in terms of power, policy, and perception of deserving-ness. But eugenics and its practices were irrational to begin with and still are in today's modern age. House of Eve is on my TBR cart deus and One Last Job is in the Amazon cart
