Aww. Im sorry. Yes, they do like berries. Next time try some fencing around them.

I've just retired and am in my planning stage of my backyard garden. In the meantime, I have wild blackberries, black raspberries, dewberries (first time I ever saw these and it came right up on my back deck), and wineberries. I thought keeping a few native berries would be a good idea. I've heard not to mix wild and cultivated varieties. Eventually, I'll have espalier dwarf apples, pears, plums, cherries, etc. Would they work in the same garden? My yard is at least 1 AC, so I could spread them out.

First - I think you are very smart to think and plan out your yard! I have always had a mix of wild and domestic varieties. Something in me screams "ACK" if I think of removing a productive plant! I have actually put compost and mulch around a wild black raspberry patch close to my cabin. I think one key is making sure everything has good airflow because that cuts down on fungal issues. And having a good management system in place.

@@foxruneec I am the same way about removing productive plants! I'm glad you said you mix it up. The birds get carried away with their planting, though! I do have a lot of botrytis issues. The good management system in place sounds like I have a lot still to learn and much trial and error. I'm trying to learn/plan as much as possible, because I've done some things backwards. I don't naturally have a green thumb, but I love to create, and then research/learn in order to create. I'm improving.😁
