Migration Crisis Is Overpowering This Tiny French Island (HBO)

  • As France just toughened up its asylum policy, mass arrivals of undocumented migrants are not only overpowering European shores, but a tiny French island off East Africa.
    Since it voted to become part of France in 2009, Mayotte has been flooded with people from neighboring islands; now, more than half of its residents were born somewhere else, mostly in the nearby Comoros, whose government claims Mayotte is theirs.
    But Mahorais disagree; they blame migrants for leeching off social services and crowding the only hospital on the island, while Mayotte already struggles to operate on par with other French regions.
    Earlier this year, locals' frustration boiled over, sparking a two-month labor strike to demand more immigration enforcement from the mainland.
    “We’re afraid of illegal immigrants,” strike organizer Maila Mouhadji told VICE News. “We’re afraid of the kids who have nothing to do and can’t work because they’ve come to Mayotte illegally … They will steal your handbags just to be able to survive.”
    France sent more police and promised to invest 1.5 billion dollars into the island. But people like Maila say the response is inadequate, and if anything, conditions in Mayotte have deteriorated since the strike ended in April. The reaction has left locals feeling like second-class citizens on their own land.
    “We can’t house the whole world in Mayotte,” Mouhadji said. “Yes, we're French, but how French are we?"

    If white Europeans say exactly these words about their own countries, VICE will vilify them and call them racist. They even started this video with the very first sentence stating that migrant crises around the world are about people rejecting those with "darker skin", and then go on to give a sympathetic report on the black native population of this island being negatively affected by migration.

      Difference is that the people of this island didn’t jump on boats and colonize about half the world. I’m not a believer in open Borders but countries like the United States, France and England can not complain about immigrants they created pursuing their imperialistic goals. Its about the legal principle of compensation, either pay back for the damage you did or make legal migration a more accessible option for the people you fucked over.

    Vice should realize this has nothing with skin colour, any nation has the right to control who can and cannot enter their borders. If the people want in Mayotte want Paris to enforce their laws, they have every right to do so.

      TheLouisXXI while yes immigration crisis has nothing to do with “skin colour” the thing is that skin colour like other things such a religion or even hijab have become markers for “the other”, so when they mention skin colour and religion here it’s just to point out that there aren’t really any evident markers for the unwanted in this society. to France they are all basically unwanted but amongst themselves there are differences, hence the lady’s last statement “how French are we?” It is true that for the most part the left only pays attention to identity in this immigration issue but ignoring identity would be a woeful mistake.

      Most people are unaware of the fact that African countries have been accepting, housing, and feeding more refugees than all of the European countries combined. One of the largest contributors is Kenya, in fact. What makes the African host countries unique is that they are taking care of hundreds of thousands of refugees with very little financial support. The reality is that only 1.5 percent of refugees from Africa and the middle east actually relocate to the west.

    • @thatsjusthim
      @thatsjusthim 5 лет назад +1

      @Doven Ro Galus your recollection may mislead you. Europe was not built by Europeans, it wasn't even known as Europe in it's development from the earliest days.

    • @thatsjusthim
      @thatsjusthim 5 лет назад +2

      @Doven Ro Galus context is important. So answer me who were the Alemanni? I can give you a hint, they lived on the land that is now occupied by white europeans. Were they white Europeans, and did you even know that they existed? Who were the first inhabitants of the Island that you might refer to as Great Britain? (Another hint, they were dark skinned) and nativity to a land is relative to timescales. You admitted this when you used the word context. Also when you said the group of people who ARE known as Germans, that was important too since they weren't referred to as Germans before. How long before?
      I don't know, that depends on context. When did the country of Germany become a country? When it's borders were set, or when it was named Germany? Or was it when the borders were re-set... Or maybe it was when they were re-set for the third time?
      TL:DR? Your argument is that they are referred to as Europeans presently, so they must have always been. I say that's incorrect.

      Doven Ro Galus you've taken what I've said (and made a point I actually made myself😕) changed some words to fit your narrative (which made it false) and then tried overwhelming me with the rest of the words. But I read what you said. A lot of it didn't make sense, for example you disregarding facts about dark skinned inhabitants. Your claim of natural lighting doesn't hold weight, several scientists and researchers working on those projects were not only white themselves but accounted for that and other factors laymen are incapable of considering. Skin color is based on genetics, geography to a degree, at best. Their DNA was also analyzed and that doesn't change as easily. Your "beliefs" do not stand on equal footing and the burden of proof would also be on you since Great Britain, Europe, nor any other place in the world can prove that they are and always have been genetically homogenous. Even right now you are attempting to give an identity to people who've already had one. If you were able to go to an Alemanni and ask him to speak German to you, or even to speak to him of Germany, he'd look at you crazy. People living on land have moved around since before history, predating even naming conventions altogether. Also Europeans are Europeans presently, they are not retroactively European just like Texas cannot retroactively become Mexico, the land was not known as Europe and the inhabitants there now were not the same as the ones before. There's even evidence of it now, with all of the Iraqi, Syrian, Moroccan, Eritrean, and Turkish Europeans who are presently on the continent. Thru marriage or citizen service, asylum or *gasp* birthright, they are European. But I bet you'd try to argue that these Europeans dont mean "those" Europeans, right?
      To help you out, the universal sign of intelligence is being able to explain difficult topics succinctly (easily) and you using that many words to in effect say "nu-uh" to me does NOT read like an easy explanation to complex topics.

    Yes, the German, Irish, and Italian immigrants faced similar problems when migrating to the United States.
    The difference is that Germans, Irish, and Italians were able to be eventually assimilated.
    Black people have never been allowed to be assimilated despite the fact that they were 1) forced to come, 2) the nation was built on them, 3) they gave America many of its cultural markers.
    Racism in countries like the one in the video are about being overwhelmed with people who are in transition.
    Racism in a country that believes in the biological differences of races is about fear of being out bred. The US has a lower percentage of the population that is new immigrant than most other countries today. This means that most of the US only sees a couple of immigrants in their town if at all. And I’ve seen it. People fretting over hearing about immigrants somewhere over there.
    In the case of the people in the video, the people share the same culture and history. It’s the problems of dealing with a high percentage of sudden new people that’s the problem.

      Social Darwinism changed how we view race. No longer do we instinctively know that we all descended from the same seed. In the countries in which social Darwinism was propagated, now we are biologically incompatible with each other as if separate species, or so we think.
      The scientific racism it produced has created permanent barriers, rather than temporary ones that can be traversed given time and effort from both sides.

    So to all the people against African immigration to France because it is "white genocide" or is "destroying European culture" I have a simple question. And no it isn't "what about colonialism?" or "didn't colonialism do the exact same?". My question is why is France still full owner of more than 50% of the colonial reserves in 14 African countries (and there are many more they are in control partial or full of also) that net them billions of Euros every single year? And then they say that they don't want poor Africans to migrate to France which has more economic opportunity and that these people should stay in their countries and fix them all while the money that belongs to their countries gets funneled out to France every year.

    There are a few issues at play here , much more than can really be discussed in a posting but as the island is on the opposite side of the globe this is the best venu perhaps.
    1. Helping the surrounding islands help themselves will be preventative maintenance. Suggestions to include giving them the tools they need such as education, farming knowledge, or even co-opratives in the area of fishing , sea farming such as for pearls or something that can be sustainably grown on all the islands could be looked into. As far as education goes with the Internet attending university online for the first few years could be done with universities in Africa. It will take government coordination among all the islands to have truly peaceful borders. Hopefully the right person will read this and facilitate appropriate action.
    2. In regards to colonialism, racism, and insinuations of lower IQ. In the context on this particular island most of the inhabitants appear to be African with France claiming it as a colony. The island inhabitants are probably genetically identical to the people on the other islands, in that aspect the radicals can get off their high horse.
    In regards to colonialism and associated racism read “the color of the law by Richard Rothstein”, that is racism. The local vigilante headed by the lady in the video is doing the most drastic and draconian acts with her basis that she does not want to live among poor people. I am sure France spends much more money on keeping the islands as a territory than it takes in from the local economy in the form of taxes, export of goods or tourism. From a financial perspective rescinding the colony status may actually save France money in the short and long term. Furthermore there does not appear to be white colonial racism or impression of white superiority based on the video, the cops appear to be doing their job.
    In regards to IQ and various races: people under that impression should read seer by angela thompson smith and visit www.earthfiles.com and watch all the youtube vid on Linda Moulton How's earthfiles RUclips Channel chronologically; we are all somebody’s experiment. And actually Africans have a higher intellectual capacity and mental abilities, this is known in America esp when given the chance at normal lives minus economic uncertainty, racism, systematically jailed, or being exploited. Mind you the scientists who insisted that Africans are inferior were white male scientists with incentive to keep the social status quo during their point in history, so in essence the talk about IQ is hogwash albeit there is natural genetic variance in any population including Europeans.
    This is my opinion on the posted vid of the overall situation on the island and my view as a person of color with university education in minority studies. For things to improve and to stop the flow of migrants thier incentive to migrate should be reduced. Actions to include giving the neighboring islands the tools to better themselves and the reigon can be done, tourism and investment on the islands can be looked into, farming on land and by sea could be looked into with regional co-ops done for the crops etc.
    And lastly border enforcement isn’t meant to be a walk in the park or easy at times but it should be done in a responsible and ethical way, destroying peoples homes, possessions and livelihoods is poor practice and policy regardless of who you are. And to the lady who is spearheading it I see you as a hypocrite as there are better short term and long term solutions. She should also keep in mind that her generics are the same as the surrounding islands and just because her passport is a different color doesn’t make her or the island inhabitants better then anyone else. If she really wants to help she and her fellow islander should get university education and grow the economy, there is no doubt the gained knowledge can also be shared and help the island and region in general.
    9-14-2020 Update: In regards to things that can help the economy of all of the islands listed in the video please see below. Instead of France giving the islands a handout why not invest and train them in the below industries? there is no doubt if successful the model can be replicated to the surrounding islands.
    www.greenwave.org/
    This site goes over how to ocean farm
    ruclips.net/video/rzodor-1XBo/видео.html
    This video goes over the benefits of new protein sources that do not require much land, a lab could be built on the French territory so people can increase protein intake minus all the land needed for cattle ( more land for tourism)
    verticalharvestfarms.com/about-us/
    This is a site that goes over how to raise crops year round regardless of climate in a fraction of the space compared to traditional farming.
    France: If you really want to help how about you look into implementation, procurement, and training of the islands residents in the above emerging technologies. Benefits include sustainable increased food production with models that can be shared cooperatively amongst the islands, I could look into private funding but message me and let me know. Benefits also include increased exports from the islands and farming technologies that can be replicated along the west coast of Africa. The small island is a perfect test bed to export the above sustainable technologies before testing them on a larger scale in the surrounding islands or West Coast of Africa. Now the inhabitants no longer have to worry about being a burden to the French in regards to taking more than they receive for the French economy, they can train themselves, work on in the above technologies and put in more to the French economy than they take out all while improving the lives of all the islands by strategically teaching them ( Other islands) how to farm and grow themselves via the above technologies after they learn them.I am don't know if my rant will make a difference but these are my thoughts on the video and proposed solutions for all parties involved. Thank you for taking a moment to review my comments.

    Every migration crisis has the same remedy, it’s not mass deportation, that’s a short term bandaid. If we don’t share our wealth with poor countries, if we abandon the goal of global prosperity then this will continue, we westerners must give those people a reason to stay home if we don’t want them in ours.

    • @pignonMZ6
      @pignonMZ6 5 лет назад

      Agreed, but I think it's easier to find a way to help these people than to reject and deport them in the future. It's not about race or religion, it's about cost. Building a wall that doesn't stop most of them is expensive, paying agencies to find them and deport them is expensive, all this non-sense is not only expensive, it's ineffective. Western leaders, the UN, the EU, all of the western world, must find a way to make sure the population from those countries (mainly Africa and South America) can succeed and prosper where they live.
      The end game is also a lot better for us, helping those countries develop means one day they could become trade partners, with our current policies we are creating generations upon generations that resent us deeply, how is that productive?
      Don't believe me? Check Brazil or South Africa, I'm not sure we are flooded with people from there.

      I agree but billions have been poured into Africa & the political powers have failed to invest any of the foreign-Aid budget in their people they've stolen it & squandered it on private jets building mansions & shopping trips to Europe & here in the UK we can't even fund social-care for the elderly & children with special needs.

    • @pignonMZ6
      @pignonMZ6 5 лет назад

      I know, it's the same pretty much everywhere in Europe and the US, we can barely afford our own social policies. But the sort of policy I'm hoping to see one day is not just an adjustment in our respective budgets, it's a bit more radical, the kind of policy I'm talking about would eliminate the cause of most wars almost immediately. I'm not some crazy communist or alt whatever, I just realise we spend billions fighting poor people that get brainwashed by fanatics who wouldn't stand a chance if those countries had the rule of law and decent leaders, maybe we could use those billions another way...

    The leftist ideas are good for poor countries, not vice versa. It is the poor countries who need socialist programs and ideologies not the rich ones. Those poor countries need welfare programs to modernize their society. Yet we have a rich country of France who's trying to be left, which works insufficiently. Let's remember that it was with France's support a successful leftist regime in Burkina Faso was forcefully removed in 1987. After the coup Burkina Faso went back to feudalism.
    In Burkina Faso's case the leftist regime was working and it showed a good example to the rest of Africa. It really helped the people. However, the former colonial power and the neighboring dictators were scared of the Revolution spreading. In my opinion France needs to install friendly leftist governments with self sufficiency in its former colonies and economic growth. By doing so France won't have a problem with migrants. All I'm saying that every African country needs to have its own Thomas Sankara. The world would be a better place.
