Europe’s migration crisis - Five years on | DW News

  • Five years ago, in the summer of 2015, Europe faced its biggest migration crisis since the Second World War. Hundreds of thousands of desperate people fleeing war and economic hardship tried to reach the continent. The largest group of migrants making the perilous journey came from Syria, where four years of civil war had forced them to flee. President Bashar al-Assad's forces had increased their attacks on opposition strongholds and the so-called Islamic State was gaining strength. But people from many other countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Eritrea, also left their homelands in search of a better future in Europe.
Faced with an unprecedented migration influx, Chancellor Angela Merkel's government decided to open Germany's borders, and almost a million migrants claimed asylum here. As part of our series looking back on that summer five years ago, we met up with two of those migrants. In 2015 both were full of hope, but now they face very different futures.

You left your wife and kids in a war zone?

You mean he should take his wife and kids thru the war zone? While it sounds terrible, sneaking one person thru is much easier than 5. And with kids? Would be difficult. But we don't know enough about his story to give a valid judgement..

Pavel Sychra if your family is not in a war zone then there is no need for immigration. At least defined by a civil responsibility. I’m pretty sure everyone agrees that Syria is not the best place at the moment. Also a place I would not leave my wife or my child.

@niall joeseph But at least the family isn't dead, which would be a huge risk. You won't change my stand on this. We don't know his full story and can only imagine what it would be for him there like. I'm not saying what he has done is right, only bringing up a potential risk he would be taking.

@John Nabil The problem is often they put in extra hurdles like demand language classes. These classes should be free FOR EVERYBODY, if only to make the step into them as low as possible. Why? Well there are always people that have trouble reading and writing and this shame will keep them from getting help. So free classes with no shame is a first step. Sadly the reason they are "paid only" is not just a budget thing, it is also to please people like you that just want to whine about them. Otherwise a free practicing class would be available for all, as such things are a benefit for everybody.

The idea is that they will get a job, get set up, apply for citizenship so their wife and kids don't have to make a perilous journey too. Yes, Morocco is a beautiful country. But most Moroccans want to leave. If you haven't noticed, it isn't economically well, and it's government is strangled by corrupt politicians and royals who hoard money for themselves. A beautiful country means nothing if you don't have opportunities in it.
Second, men migrate so that they can establish themselves. They migrate so that they could get better paid, and they send that money home to their families. Once they bought an apartment or house and are well established, they bring their families over to ensure the family's security. Its called using your mind. You can either send the entire family on a very risky journey and have them all drown at sea, or, if they make it, live a hard financial life trying to find housing and jobs, or you can send one person to minimize the risk of the destruction of the entire family.
Second, aren't you the Europeans who claim to be not sexist? Why does it bother you so much that more men are coming than women?

The leaders of the EU created the problem and it is much worse there than it is in the USA. Unfortunately our political leaders are just as clueless. We will have the same problems with the same people it just takes longer to get enough people across an ocean. At this time we apparently only have one area that is on the way to their own justice system and cultural beachhead in this country.
