I've been trying to figure out just what gesture drawing is and your explanation is the best I've come across so far. I think I get it now! Thanks!

Glad it helps! Yes I think the confusing thing about it is that ‘gesture drawing’ is a name for a very specific exercise but it is also a technique you can use to start a sketch or drawing. Someone who has studied the book The Natural Way To Draw will have a different interpretation to someone who practices life drawing and different again to someone whose artwork has a loose gestural style. It’s a good technique to practice if you want to get better at sketching quickly but probably not so helpful if you want to draw in a very specific style like hyper realism. Got to pick and choose what techniques are most useful :)

Cool. I didn’t know there was a name for what I’m doing. I’m try info to get the whole thing because when I focus on detail, I can’t see if it’s wonky.

Yes looking at the overall object is what this exercise is all about! Contour drawing is more about detail. You can switch between both types of drawing depending on if you are looking at the bigger picture or small details ☺️

Thanks for this video! Ive been watching alot of videos about geture drawing and they helped me realize what I've been doing wrong, its about moment and feeling not drawing exactly what you see, and i understand it now :)

Yes! Drawing and exploring the object in the moment is what it's all about. I think sometimes people think of gesture drawing as a way to draw realistically but really its an exercise, to help develop your observation skills and coordination. It can be used at the start of a drawing but not often used as a finished drawing. "Moment and feeling" is spot on!

Thank you for this. I’m just going to start doing it bc I don’t understand it. How is there tension or energy in an Apple? This is why I get lost on the gesture method. I watch Proko too and he’s saying this object has energy, or tension, or force. The only thing that connects with me would be the term “flow”. I see the curves and I get how you could see a lamp has curves. So too an Apple. But I don’t get the other stuff… YET. 😊. Ps. I appreciate what you’re doing! 👍

Hi Daytona, Apologies for the delay in replying. I understand what you are saying and an apple doesnt have tension or energy per say in terms of movement like a figure does. I'd think of it instead as describing the form with your pencil. How can you tune in to the 'movement' (direction) of the lines and edges and weight and volume of the object and use the movement of your pencil to describe these. Gesture drawing is not always appropriate but I think it is a very good exercise for practicing sketching quickly and for understanding an object beyond just its outline. Once you get used to it, it becomes quite an intuitive action where you are just responding to what you see with the movement of your hand. I hope that helps - feel free to ask more questions!

Hi Love your content and also for being left handed 😊 Does your website offer lessons in figure drawing?

Hi Dave, I teach life drawing in person but not online yet. I have long term plans to add more advanced lessons including figures to my membership but for now I'm focusing on people learning to draw and improving through practice, and figure drawing is really a whole other level! If you are interested in figure drawing I can recommend Kenzo from Love Life Drawing - check out his channel, he's not left handed 😄 but he's very good at breaking down the figure drawing process www.youtube.com/@lovelifedrawing
