    Kev, Andy is lucky to have you. Also, 10 mg of an ssri is what I was on from ages 19-30, and that was considered a low dose for an adult. Improved my life immensely. 10 mg may be perfect for Andy. IDK about antihistamines for sleep (not a professional), but I'd try the raised ssri alone first so that you can see how it affects him with no other factors involved. Keep up the good work.

    Props to you Kev and Anna for properly advocating not only for Andy but for autism in general I think many parents are exhausted and just want the best for their kids and hastily agree to whatever plan any doc throws at them in hopes it will work that doc definitely learned some new things especially the playing outside suggestion if Andy just got home from school his "social meter"/"social battery" aka his tolerance for interaction is very low to nonexistent how could a professional not understand that especially for a kid who stopped going to school because it's so anxiety producing

    It is so awful that the CAMHS psychiatrist has not bothered to read Andy's previous notes and that there has been no communication with the previous psychiatrists. Unless the psychiatrist refused to read the previous notes from other psychiatrists. It is strange in this age of computers that it sounds like the psychiatrists don't keep a record of their notes on their computers.

    That psychiatrist sounds clueless and honestly super pretentious believing that his 'new ideas' as his psychiatrist without much background information could be better than what you two, his parents have seen in him over the years. It sounds like he is treating Andy as a stubborn child who needs to 'learn' rather than an autistic child who is learning how to live life and live in a world which is very difficult to live in. I saw one when I was 17 at the worst time in my life who insisted I was 'fine' and 'just overthinking' even though I was being torn apart by a huge mental health issue. He even came into the waiting room and spoke to my Dad about it in front of waiting patients. So don't worry you are not an isolated case with ignorant psychiatrists. They aren't professionals at life, just people in a job who have studied for it.
    Well done for having Andy's back! He is making wonderful progress!

      Don't think you can say that you don't know what's been put in Andy's records that he can see. What he suggested are all good ideas for a number of people would probably help. Calling someone clueless isn't really fair.

    • @imaginaryenemy2565
      @imaginaryenemy2565 5 лет назад +8

      Their most likely very inexperienced with Autism so many people claim they can "fix" autistic children or discipline the autism out of kids when they don't understand that at it's very core its a neurodevempemtal disorder children on the spectrum are all unique but some symptoms are universal and typical methods of discipline and parenting tend to either fail entirely, worsen behavior or cause regression

  • @pacemarshall9358
    @pacemarshall9358 5 лет назад +6

    The psychiatrist sounds generally like he wants to help Andy. However, his idea of helping Andy is different than your idea of helping Andy. In and of itself this isn't bad. Actually, many doctors and psychiatrists have a different idea of helping than parents/caretakers do. Often because of what you mentioned: the doctor's idea of helping Andy is building resiliency and integrating him more with his community and society, and your and Anna's idea of helping Andy is making sure that he is happy and feels safe. Many times psychiatrists and social workers not only push their client a bit to get out of their comfort zone, but also push the parents/caretakers to move out of their comfort zone as well to create growth. Growth isn't always easy or comfortable (and I needn't tell you that--you already know!). Sometimes it takes the form of asking you to try something again (like this psychiatrist is doing), and other times it takes the form of ignoring your expertise as a parent and ignoring or not reading past doctors notes (another thing this psychiatrist is going).
    It's unfortunate that this psychiatrist isn't interested in working WITH you and Anna, hand in hand. It's also really upsetting that Andy doesn't get to keep a psychiatrist for more than two visits. I can't imagine how frustrating that is to not be able to work hand-in-hand and consistently with one psychiatrist.Hopefully in six months if you're given a new psychiatrist they are willing to listen to you and have a discussion.

    If they want you to take away his crisps they need to be in your home to do intensive eating therapy first to get him to try new foods and theat takes a lot of time and effort and is very stressful for Andy. Taking away his gaming and iPad will be a huge deal for him also. They would have to have respite to help with that to get him busy and out of the house and doing things instead. You cannot do it alone! We all know how much he would protest!

    I’m on 20g fluoxetine tablets and I’m 80kgs (6.2ft) and it does wonders. 10g sounds like a decent amount for Andy. Would be interesting to see his reaction to it, I don’t feel sleepier but sleeping more is better than staying up stressing so we will see.

  • @fionascheibel977
    @fionascheibel977 5 лет назад +1

    Interestingly Fluoxetine increased my anxiety. I got put on propranolol that a bit like Andy taking advantage of the sedative side effect of an antihistamine propranolol has a calming side effect for me as well as its blood pressure lowering main purpose it is usually prescribed for. I also take melatonin to help get me to sleep and have that same issue of not being able to stay asleep. I get really distressed when i know i need to be asleep but arent and then that distress makes the issue worse.

    It’s nuts that there is no continuation of care. How can they expect to give Andy the support he really needs to be ‘doing well’ by anything near their definition of it if there is never someone working with him for long enough to fully understand his case! I have the same issue with social workers - I never have one for more than just a yearly review and then it’s changed by the next time. It leaves me without the support I actually need.
    I also feel like this guy doesn’t really understand how much effort it’s taking from both Andy and you guys to have things where they are right now. It doesn’t sound like the guy understands autism properly. Also he needs to take into account that with things like changes in respite and going to Disney, Andy is already facing a lot of stretching so it’s not like everything is just stagnating...and sometimes consolidating progress, like the fact he has been trying bites of foods and putting on weight and going to school (all despite some hiccups that could have really thrown those things off again), is important before making another push forward otherwise it can lead to burnout and losing progress again.
    All in all I think you and the professionals who actually know Andy have a better idea of what is right at the moment than this guy. I’m glad Andy has you guys to advocate for him in situations like this.

    Ugh I hate when professionals have their ideas on what you should do with your child. It makes me want to pull out my hair when I get told things to try. My son isn't as picky as Andy is with food, but he still only has a handful of things he'll eat. I have tried EVERYTHING to get him to eat other things, and he will just not eat. Same on the other aspects of life too and improving on things. Professional people don't understand and they don't listen. It makes you want to scream and then you just come off as an aggressive asshole parent. At least that is how it makes me feel.
    Sending love and support!

    To get Andy trying new flavours, why don't you try giving him different flavoured Dr pepper like cherry or black current, this may get him used to different flavours and if he likes it then may encourage him to try food that has that flavour. Not sure if you can get different flavour Dr pepper in cans or bottles but you definitely can in fast food places like burger king.
    Not sure if it will work but just an idea 😊

    Frustrating visit. I would definitely introduce both medications with some interval, to separate effects of both. Antihistamines do not make me sleep better - they make me dizzy, confused, I have memory loss about things I have done while on them. I felt heavily intoxicated. Have met many people who feel the same. So it is good to first judge the effect of increased dose and just then try antihistamines.

    Tbf, having so much salt is bad for you and does make you excessively thirsty, and spending a lot of time looking at a screen is not healthy and gives a lack of vitamin D. Personally, I would do what you tried to get him to do when he tried to reach the bells to get him to try a little bit of new food each time as well as crisps.
    It is true that fresh air makes you tired and at least, however, I can see what you're saying.
    I can see what he's saying as he probably sees a lot of parents who just give their kids what they want just to keep them happy for an easy life, even if it wasn't the best thing for them, such as letting them spend hours on the PS4 all night, thus letting the child govern their life.
    I think there is a balance of focusing on both his long term health and happiness here.
