SURGERY RECOVERY VLOG | I HAD A GUM GRAFT

  • I had a gum graft which is considered a minor surgery. I have a receding gum on my bottom front tooth and if left would mean losing my tooth. A gum graft is where gum is cut out of the roof of your mouth and stitched over the exposed root. I did a lot of research online before and after the surgery, but one thing I struggled to find was a day by day list of what to expect after the surgery, what the pain would be like and what kinds of foods I would be able to eat as the days went by. So I have documented my own experiences in the hopes that someone in the future will be able to watch this to answer their questions when they have this procedure done. I will of course be updating in the future as well; it has only been a week so far and it's too early to know even if it has worked or not. You can subscribe if you want to make sure you don't miss future updates.

    I know it's been a few years, but seriously thank you so much for making this video! Getting my gum graft tomorrow and I've been so stressed but your video is the only one online documenting recovery and helping me through!

    Thanks for sharing your experience with us. You're a champion for talking about the smallest details. It really helped a lot seeing and hearing someone going through the same thing. I've had this done on Tuesday and you're right, the hunger is the worst. I mean the pain is really not that bad and like you I didn't need the pain meds all that much, but I was irritated all the time because I was hungry and my appetite was fine but I couldn't eat. Lol. Thanks again for sharing this, hope all is well now.

      @@imeldacordova7908 it healed up fairly nicely but is still quite a bit receded. The periodontist didn't expect it to be fully covered anyway since it was a pretty extreme case! But I honestly experienced no pain at all, not sure if that's rare but I was super grateful for that. If you're having the procedure done, just know it's really not that bad! Wishing you all the best 😊

    Not many detailed videos of the post op daily care, so thanks for doing this. It is so comforting to compare human experience to others.Day 1: I had 9 gum grafts on left top and bottom with donor tissue (bless those and another reason why I am organ donor).
    Day 2: Initial hydrocodone (325mg) wasn't cutting pain, dr said to take 800 mg ibuprofen which then made tolerable. Have alternated tylenol and ibuprofen with meals since then and been ok. Did cold packs both days. Day 3: So much more swelling, by eve with same routines before swelling down halfway. Did take nap for hour after tylenol, which often makes me drowsy. Ate egg over easy on very cooked beans on my good side.
    Bought whole leaf aloe vera juice as additional healing support started tonight.

    Had a gum graft exactly a week ago. First couple of days were very bearable pain wise - but food was a bit awkward initially to get used to. Then days 2-3 I started getting used to it and eating more, more variety etc. Pain hit from day 3-6 only mainly in roof of mouth as swelling went down on gum, gum doesn’t really hurt at all unless you touch it etc. roof of mouth will hurt but gargle water and salt and take anti inflammatory pills. Anyway… day 7 and everything seems to be okay hopefully but I can’t obviously check. It has been annoying but keeping distracted and still finding ways to eat so I feel okay. It’s definitely not as bad as I thought. Time goes by day by day and I’m able to go about my lifestyle as normal in general from the second day. Just eating is a bit annoying but the sting on roof of mouth when eating is the only issue, that goes away with sipping water simultaneously. And that area is t of concern it’s guaranteed to heal. The gum graft itself isn’t bothering me at all and I hope that means that it’s healing well. Hope whoever reads this has a lot of faith that it’ll go well. Btw… procedure I was completely awake very nervous at the beginning. But after a few mins of closing my eyes and singing to myself, popped a diazepam, yeah I was very calm actually - you don’t feel anything. It was actually quite fun I’d say almost as an experience. The only annoying thing like I said is roof of mouth will be a thorn in the backside but it’s honestly not that deep of an issue. Drinking water and small doses of painkillers will do the trick if even needed

    Thank you for sharing your healing journey. I had gum grafting about 10 days ago over my entire lower gums except for a couple teeth where I have a crown. I did not have the hole in the roof of my mouth because of the extensive grafting but I had to go a steroid dose pack for 3 days after the donor tissue tissue was grafted so I did not have the issue with the plaster. Since most of the lower gums were grafted, I cannot chew at all until my sutures are removed on day 14, but I like your idea of the soft soggy bread in soup, which I haven't tried yet. Hoping that you continued to heal, and I would love to hear your experience when the stitches were removed and how that has changed things.

    I’m absolutely petrified of having this done, mine is also one tooth at the bottom front, I’m more worried about the gum being taken from the roof of my mouth, I hate not being able to eat the way I want too, because like you I lose weight very quickly. I’m just scared of the whole thing especially not looking at things or touching with my tongue etc. Argh :(

      It's not very nice having food restrictions, but it's not as bad as it sounds and it's over in a couple of weeks. For me I never wanted to touch it with my tongue cause it hurt to move my mouth so that made it easier

    I had mine done 4 days ago and It’s have been pain free. I’m so grateful because I still have the protection on the roof of my mouth. I have been praying to God keep it there, so afraid of the pain in case It’s come off. Thank God It didn’t 🙌🏼 I woke up in my third night with my gum bleeding I was freaking out but I heard Its normal to bleed a little in the first days. It wasn’t hurting tho so I hope everything is ok. I have been very careful with everything. I will go back to the dentist in 3 days and I can’t wait for this to be over, It’s so annoying to eat anything. What’s weird that my dentist told me to brush my teeth after the first 24hrs. He didn’t give me any mouthwash or antibiotics prescription. I’m still kinda nervous about it, I don’t know. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, It helped me a lot to prepare for mine. So I appreciate it. There’s not a lot of videos about this on RUclips that gives you all the details. Thank you!

      Just came back from the one week appointment. The doctor took off the protection of the roof of my mouth and also the stitches. He said It’s healing good and told me to just go back in one month. I was kinda confused cause I thought it was going to be like yours haha but I don’t have a 2 weeks appointment. I didn’t have a plastic on the roof of my mouth tho, was something different. Anyways, no pain and I had an easy experience over all. Very happy!

    I had 4 teeth graft so far I have experienced lot of pain which has gotten worst as the days pass. I'm about 6 days post op and the glue they put over the wound in the roof of my mouth fell off the 2nd day because I used my sonic care tooth brush the directions don't say not to use an electric toothbrush I later found that online. The spot where they took the tissue has been horribly painful with everything. I'm really hoping I don't ever have to do this again all I can say if anyone has gum issues do all you can keep your teeth clean don't ever want gum graft. I have had other surgery's like knees I would say this has been the most painful procedure I have ever had. I'm taking 800MG OF ibuprofen 3 times a day as well as Vicodin 5/325 each night to go to sleep. I wasn't given any antibiotics which I think could be the problem must be infected.

      blastman8888 Oh God. I have to get this done on the 7th for 2 of my front bottom teeth. It wasn’t really anything I myself could have prevented though. It was caused by my braces. They even have to realign the muscle that is attached from my bottom lip to my bottom gum because it turned sideways from my jaw shifting, which pulled down on my gums even more.

    Did you or any of you had the experience that a white coating occurred on the gums of and around the surgical area after a couple of days or a week after surgery? I've read somewhere that it is supposed to be like that and that this coating helps the gum to heal and you should not rubb that white stuff of, but it also seems that no one mentions this, so I'm not sure if this is indeed normal. Also because of that the gum feels a bit stiff and tingly. (btw. and I had a graft surgery without stitches, the gum is held by collagen stripes)

    • @bonbonzz
      @bonbonzz  5 лет назад +2

      I didn't actually get a choice, I think it's up to the periodontist more than the patient. But I think the reason is that if it's your own tissue it's more likely to take, whereas if it's from someone else your body is likely to reject it

Dentistry in the U.K is quite brutal. We get a ridiculously weak, numbing injection to our gums, that faded during my procedure. So painful. Then you only got a option of ibuprofen for pain relief 🥺🥀

I was a little sore where he stitched the cadaver gums around my teeth the first day, but I took a total of 2 codeine pills that completely took the pain away. I was a little swollen for about 3 days, but it didn't hurt. The worst part for me was the inconvenience of waiting 4 weeks to get the stitches removed. I've never had any tissue taken from the roof of my mouth, but I heard that way is more painful.

      fartun hussein hey, glad you found this useful :) it cost me about $1800 (NZD) just for the surgery, but all up including all the appointments was closer to $3000. I think on average it is between 1-2k per tooth. Mine could have been cheaper if I chose not to be sedated so it depends what you need out of it.

My graft is already beginning to sag, I do sometimes have “phantom pain” sort of in the front area. However, I must add for anyones curiosity I do smoke and tend to have a dry mouth. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I tend to think those play a factor.

    • @bonbonzz
      @bonbonzz  5 лет назад +3

      It's white because it's still dead skin. Our gums are usually a red colour because blood is running through them, but because that skin has been cut from somewhere else it doesn't have blood in it yet. Once it heals and has "attached" to your gums around it, that's when it should get that red colour back

I look on the internet and it says it should be fully healed in two weeks.

      Mine took way longer than that to heal. You can usually get stitches out after two weeks so maybe that's what it meant, but it can take months to fully heal. I wasn't allowed to bite on the area until about 3 months later!
