    This is great. Thank you so much for just using two hand tools. For beginners like me this helps a lot. I'm always discouraged when someone uses a full shop of power tools - table saws, table routers, planers, etc. This is an encouragement to me to keep on building with the limited tools I have before I make more monetary investments in larger wood working tools.

    Nice bird house design. George

    Good little project. Way overkill on the materials though! 3/8 cedar for outside would be good and a way to open to clean wood be helpful.

  • @MrLibra56
    @MrLibra56 3 года назад +3

    Perches outside the entrance often allow predators to get to the chicks. Birds have the ability to 'grab' onto the wood and don't really need perches. I had to remove the perch from my nest box as a magpie landed on it and was about to try to get to the chicks...

    You have some serious problems with the design. Bird houses require certain dimensions for each breed of bird. Even the size and height of the hole Why two entrance holes? Bird houses should never have a perch since predators can use it to enter the house. There are no drainage holes and there is no way to clean out the birdhouse. The house needs to be cleaned after each nesting. There should be ventilation slots where the sides meet the roof.

    One more board and you would have 3 spaces instead of 1 small and 1 large !!

    How did you cut the acute bevels for the peak of the birdhouse? you skipped overt his in the video, but I'd imagine that angle is higher than the max 45 degree bevel of a handheld jigsaw.
    I'm trying to figure out a similar challenge on an A-frame replica birdhouse I'm making right now, and I'm at the point where I'm looking at creating a makeshift tenon jig on a table saw to stand the pieces on end for those tight angle cuts, but this seems like it's more complicated than it should be.

      I'm watching this video a couple of years after you posted this, and I'm thinking the same thing. It looks quite a bit steeper than 45. I'd sure like to know how he made it.

    - Like the stylized build BUT entry holes should NOT be too large in order to keep squirrels out.
    Thanx 4 sharing.

    Very cute design.
    How many degrees did you bevel the second roof piece? You kind of blew right past that. It looks steeper than 45°, but I'm not sure. Thanks. @Wes Hamstra

    You should improve it by embedding an inspection flap.

    Saw this the other day. Was it easy, for me no. I could not get the 45 Deg cuts right. Also using a jigsaw was a pain. Now did I enjoy making it, yes, but a lot of errors (operator headspace type). I bought 16" wood instead of 12 " but made it work, I guess. Will I do it again, a big MAYBE. I am not totally done, but will try and post a picture when I am.

    • @WesHamstra
      @WesHamstra  2 года назад +1

      I made this exact birdhouse when I was 10. It was pretty rough looking. I then made it again when I was 16. It was a little better. Then I made one for this video and it was better.

      Winner of a video, I have been researching "easy to make wood bird houses" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Daniliana Birdfly Babar - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my work buddy got great success with it.

    Good job buddy.
    You so close from US boarder and You use cheap master craft jigsaw??? wow

    • @WesHamstra
      @WesHamstra  5 лет назад +1

      marcelo403 polo haha yes. I never use the jigsaw so i dont really want to spend money on a good one. That jig saw has survived a car accident. It was thrown 50 feet from my truck. If you look at it in the video you can see it has damage.

    At 2:38 you said the wall of the face and back needs to be 5 inches, but at 5:26 you said the wall of the lower side needs to 5 1/2 inches. I love the video, but did I miss something?? My wall piece is 1/2 inch higher than the front and back when cut to 5 1/2 inches.

I am just beginning so all steps and sizes are very important. I will continue to watch all your videos with all the details to help me make some birdhouses, many thanks

    Wes Hanstra ~ I followed your video on the bird house huild. This was the very first build I have ever attempted. It turned out perfectly when comparing it to yours. I feel like a rock star. Woo Hoo. Your directions and your verybal clarification (easy to understand what you said) were superb. I followed you with no hiccups. I will be following you and continually making what ever it is I need that you have a video for. Thank you so much. I am feeling much more confident in woodworking. I inherited a large amount of tools from my Dad and I have virtually any/all tools that I could have ever wanted. I have the tools and now I have a wonderful Professor. This is not only fun but very rewarding. I will be a student of yours hopefully for many more years. Thank you Wes Hamstra, Very grateful to you and your easy to follow video's. Very sincerely, Mrs. Kelley G. Bates, Hunt Valley, Md.
