Euphorbia is the fourth-largest genus of flowering plants (about 5,000 species currently identified) and in the family Euphorbiaceae. Ficus is a genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes and hemiepiphytes in the family Moraceae. They both have a latex sap, but the plant uses it for different reasons. When injured, the latex of Euphorbia plants takes a long time to harden. This gives the plant time to deliver a cocktail of poisonous compounds to stop biting insects. Ficus latex on the other hand hardens rapidly, sealing the wound to prevent infection and fluid loss.
