    ABOUT THIS FILM
    ____________________
    Doting kestrel parents
The male works hard to find food for his hungry family and has been bringing in a wide variety of prey, from small rats to lizards. It is the female's job to tear this up into tiny morsels to feed the chicks.
    A fair feeder
The female kestrel is very fair, distributing a little bit to each one in turn. If there are any bits that are too big she eats them herself and where a prey item is too big to finish in one go she caches the rest at the back of the nest for another day - like a food larder. Watch her pluck a blackbird ready for her chicks - the nest quickly gets carpeted in fine blackbird feathers.
    Growing kestrel chicks
Notice how fast the chicks grow from tiny, helpless creatures unable to hold up their heads to a noisy rabble squabbling over food by the time they are just one week old!
    A caring and fierce mum
The kestrel mum is so attentive. Watch as she spreads her wings over her fluffy brood and envelopes them in her feathers - at one point she actually topples over!
She is still very wary of intruders, which is hardly surprising after all the attacks on the nest she endured whilst incubating, but she's a fierce defender and these chicks are set to do well.
This female kestrel has had to fight to keep her nest all season. Follow her story of bravery here: www.robertefuller.com/diary/s...

You get a successful family such as this one when there's a plentiful food supply.. In years when food is in short supply it's a different scenario.. That is when you see the chicks competing for food and witness the soul destroying image of a chick unable to compete it's other siblings and slowing dies of starvation apparently unnoticed by it's parents..

These kestrels are lovely but there was a terribly sad older sibling killing a sibling in the successive clutch with the Barn Owls. It was an unusual situation to begin. The parents only chick survive in the first clutch and she didn’t fledge independently. She remained in the parents nest and brooded the eggs too. But when Mum was feeding the 3 new babies, she tried to steal the food. When Mum said no, she attacked the chicks and killed the largest and flew away with it. She was permanently ousted after that. The remaining two Hans and Grete fledged and were beautiful.

Mrs Kestrel's a caring mum. Love the way the chicks all huddle together when mum has to leave the nest, each of them for one another in case of trouble, supporting one another with warmth. Maybe there's a lesson for us humans here.

The young are likely always hungry, they are growing rapidly after all.
