THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE (1997) - The Best Movie You Never Saw

- Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven. Those iconic words come from John Milton’s classic work Paradise Lost. Milton also happens to be the name of Al Pacino’s character in 1997’s horror drama, THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. Directed by Taylor Hackford, THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE is one of the most underrated films in the careers of Pacino and Keanu Reeves as well as an early treat in the careers of both Charlize Theron and Connie Nielsen. A modest box office hit grossing $153 million against a $53 million budget, coming in second during its opening weekend to I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER. THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE holds a mediocre 63% on Rotten Tomatoes yet consistently ranks as one of the best performances in Al Pacino’s illustrious career.
Despite the film's cult status, it's often neglected when discussed in the context of Al Pacino or Keanu Reeves' careers, or as an important stepping stone to the big time for Charlize Theron. That's why THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE is this week's Best Movie You Never Saw!

Keanu Reeves actually taking a major pay cut for Al Pacino to be in the movie shows how cool he is
that`s actually pretty smart for his career overall ,getting your name up there with al pacino as an up and coming actor is better than a fast pay check
Reeves is such a nice guy.
See whenever he takes photos with female fans, he puts his arm around them, but doesn’t actually touch them. Also, I’ve heard he’s took pay cuts a few times after that film too. Gent!
...or how uncool Pacino is
@@Kiárán92 the matrix sequels are an example as well.
I don’t know why people haven’t seen this. It’s an amazing, genuinely creepy movie that builds tension so effectively. Just awesome.
I was going to say who the hell hasn't seen this
@Steven Burrell I always wondered why that title got used so much, now it makes sense. I’d see it everywhere on popular movies, games, musicians. I just sit here like “???? Everyone I know knows about that!” Your comment makes it make sense now
This is quite well known movie.
It really does capture an unsettling, "nobody's coming to save you" intensity through the whole movie. Like there are a bunch of invisible timers running, but the characters only ever realize it once it's juuuust too late. A wonderful example of suspense done right. The only thing that throws me off in this film (and I'm sure he's getting to it. I'm only 2 mins into the video), is that accent
Because this channel is for little children who are literally watching everything for the first time.
The part where his wife barricades herself then slices her own throat open through the window still gets me to this day. This movie is a masterpiece I watched it right after it came out.
Yeah. To anyone who says Keanu can't act, I point at this movie. I will say I can tolerate his English accent more than his Southern one.
I still here Johnny Utah, "IIII ammm annn F....B
...I...Agent!"
Honestly, that's the point where the movie lost me. Who lets a schizophrenic lady with a tendency towards self harm alone like that.
@@fluffynator6222who says she was schizo? She is clearly under demonic oppression
I remember when I watched this in theaters, I left knowing that Charlize Theron was going to be a star. Her performance in this flick gets forgotten about, but her characters distress in the latter half of the film is extremely convincing, and my heart generally aches when I think about it.
Love the film, bought the DVD, but couldn't watch it through again because of her heartbreaking performance.
Just watched it for the first time, and I was blown away by Charlize's acting. Incredible.
I speak for the older crowd when I say... We couldn't have missed it! ☺️ But the younger generation might never heard of it, that's true. Al Pacino is the star here, imho. His character is diverse and exceptional. The volume of his acting actually terrified me as a teenager. I had to watch this movie several times over the years to calm my curiosity or need that the good always wins. Can also remember some disturbing sequences and plot twists that made me loose some sleep.
This was hard to avoid when it came out. There was a big push, it wasn't at the levels of a blockbuster, but still
Facts
Right? I still watch this movie. I was like who hasnt watched this movie? Whaaaaa 🤪😵🤪😵🤪
Yeah, I owned a video shop when it was first released on VHS and it was always a great renter. Personally I think it's one of the best things Charlize Theron has ever done.
@@jenlovesbooks true. It's an honour meeting you. Owning a rental shop, wow. that was a big deal back then. Kids today won't understand
Pacino's monologue on God was INCREDIBLE.
My favorite line: "I'M A FAN OF MAN!" Of course, he's obviously not. That's why he asserts the idea so passionately. Such excellent acting. The best critique on the 20th century I've ever heard.
“HE’S LAUGHING HIS SICK, FUCKING ASS OFF!”
If you're including the entirety of his speech, I would say it's more of a monologue about himself, the very nature of who he is, and his viewpoint/beliefs concerning God and mankind.
@@LE-gs9mo the schtick being that he is lying because he’s the devil
@@ilovebutterstuff Oh he is a fan of man, only it's just one part of mankind that he likes - indulging their instincts rather than restraining them
What I love the most about this movie is that it’s a glimpse of that can be if he made a single choice. Everything that happened in this movie was from the moment in went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. That’s was a powerful realization.
"Vanity is definitely my favorite sin". I still remember this line. This movie is excellent.
I've watched the Devil's Advocate a dozen times; each time I found a different aspect to a character or their line of thinking that has subtext that isn't readily apparent. Every actor and actress in this movie is excellent and believable for the role. It is well photographed; it's pacing is constant- the climactic scene of Pacino as John Milton is a tour de force. Pacino makes the case for Satan, a sophistry of unmitigated gall and self aggrandizement that exemplifies the mendacity of Pride. So vain, so self congratulatory, he punches every button of human ambition and excess. Believe it or not, as a Christian, I became more aware of the trickery of the Devil in Milton's speech. Understanding that level of cunning has given me ideas on how to safeguard myself from the rationalized temptations of our world. The Devil's Advocate is a singular film, there is nothing quite like it. It is smart, it is emotional in way that most people can understand. The opening gives no hint of the ride the viewer is about to take, a ride that once they finish, they will never forget.
Same, except I'm not a Christian & have watched it about half a dozen times. Still, lots to discover.
I hardly disagree to be honest.
I love Al Pacino in the movie. At the same time I think it is one of many examples about Keanu Reeves being a "just good enough" actor, instead of a good actor.
I would need to research the name of the main cast female actor, I actually think she did very well.
The plot is not complex at all. It tries to surprise you, still no one ever gets surprised by this movie. Its hard to get invested in the main character, because he developes so fast and never really does anything good to annother person.
(Oh and the final is just straight up trash, time travel is a complex thing and way too complex for the makers of this movie)
The wordplay with things that are connected to the old testament and spirituality is sometimes good. Most of the times it's not only far away from modern christianity, but it's also just too much and too forced. The good parts would have a way better effects, if they didnt feel like common but still forced speech.
The way they represent sins and how humans can embrace those is actually not bad. Definitely not masterclass, but its fitting and often entertaining.
So all in all I would call it a bad movie. Everything that is good gets boring and meaningless by pushing it too far. Everything that is bad is not bad enough to feel like entertaining trash.
Still I'll recommend it to anyone. Al Pacino with one of his best performances is always watchable.
I like that real senators were at the devil's party.
Donald Trump was supposed to be there too but had a "busineess emergency." He was "probably with Mark Zuckerberg." Prescient & funny.
And this was only 1997!
Any movie similar to this one?
I'll never forget the first time Tamara Tunie revealed her true self. Scared the crap outta me and shifted the whole tone of the movie in a flash. Fantastic, brilliant movie that had quite a few "OH SHIT" moments.
I was going to say something similar. Comparing her in this movie to be role in SVU... What a night and day difference!
YEP!
@@MisterFarce Ah, Dr. Warner.
I know the reveal from natural to supernatural halfway through the movie was amazing. l love when they do that.
@@SomeoneIsAlwaysMovingOnTheSurf And it works especially well considering that, for a good while even after the reveal, it's still left kind of ambiguous as to whether something supernatural is actually going on, or whether the things Marianne was seeing were just in her head as a combination of extreme anxiety from being all alone all day in an apartment way too big for just herself in a new city where she doesn't have any real friends, and her strong, unfulfilled desire to have a baby.
It's only really until much later in the film when we are finally, truly shown that, yes, there ABSOLUTELY ARE supernatural occurrences going on with Milton as the epicenter. And I think all of that just makes the film's pacing and atmosphere work SOOOO well, and it's definitely one of those movies that's even better the second time around, watching through again with all the knowledge gained from the first viewing helping to catch things you didn't/couldn't the first time. (Angel Heart is a fairly similar film in that regard, featuring the equally legendary Robert De Niro as the man revealed to be Satan himself at the end just like Pacino in The Devil's Advocate. Definitely give that a watch too!)
"He's an absentee landlord!"
Gotta love Al Pacino is seen chewing roles.
Who are you carrying all those bricks for Kevin??
@@charlieanddadreviewsandcha2243 God?
Why were the characters often making chewing motions? Was Pacino's tongue supposed to be flicking like a snake's? Keanu's lips got so red when he was working with the devil.
I remember that scene from The Simpsons when Homer asked Marge can I play Devil's Advocate. And she was like sure, then he goes and plays the pinball machine game called Devil's Advocate.
"I'm smarter than the Devil, i'm smarter than the Devil."
This was actually a well known movie at the time, still pretty good.
Correct
Affirmative
Copy that
Hell yeah it was! It was great when I was 14 seeing it in theatres for the first time. Blew me away at that age. Still a very entertaining watch.
The last 20 minutes... unbelievable!
Who would have predicted The longevity of Keanu Reeves’ career?…. Outlasted so many 90s actors just because he’s Keanu
Alex Winter's gonzo absurdist masterpiece, 'Freaked', is one of the best movies Keanu was ever in and he's not even credited-go-nuts!
On that note, ever wonder what happened to Yahoo Serious and Pauly Shore? LOL
@@judsongaiden9878 Wasn't Keanu the "Dog Boy" in Freaked? Totally forgot about that!
I have a cousin.
His best delivery.
He's still doing amazing shit like John Wick, but also garbage like Knock Knock. He's been pretty consistent. lol
Hands down, one of Pacino's GREATEST performances ever.
Definitely an underrated film that nobody knows about. I love this movie, The ending was thought provoking.
Keanu trying to act (and pretty much succeeding), Al Pacino munching the scenery, and Charlie...sweet Charlize. This is one of those great films that gets forgotten.
Craig T Nelson was very good as well
first time I saw Charlize in a movie. I instantly thought "She's beautiful....and she has nice feet."
@@RedDragonM1 Quinton, is that you?
This movie has a underlying disturbing feeling of creepiness/darkness when watching it even though it's not a flat out horror movie. I've loved it from the 1st time I saw it in the theater when it came out but I never watch it alone even though I'm a hardcore horror fan.
I totally know what you mean. It's got some uncomfortable vibe, and I don't think it was intentional!!
This is DEFINITELY one of those films.
@@JohnDoe-ef3wo Man, it was definitely intentional
When Pacino is giving his speech about God. The lighting and his facial expressions get so creepy at times.
It's uncomfortable in the way it's dark and brooding, but it's still entrancing and fun to watch. I'd say Angel Heart was more uncomfortable
One of the rare films where Reeves attempting an accent doesn't drag the film down. It's also one of the few later scenery chewing Pacino performances I like because the character is so over the top to begin with that that style of acting is appropriate.
Look at me.
Noone would expect, I was, a master of the universe.
Love that line
This is one of those gems that I happened to see on TV when I was a teenager and loved it (it didn't get a massive European release, at least not where I live).
You don't really have a single person to root for, it's a clear cut case of good and evil, and the acting was so good that the entire movie had tension to it. Might have to rewatch it tonight, after I watch Lethal Weapon 4, saw 1, 2 and 3 last night.
Great bad movies are the best.
It’s one of my top3 favorite movies. I never understood how it wasn’t even nomited.
my second greatest movie of all time only after the godfather
Saw it in the theatre tripping on LSD…microdots to be exact when I was 17… one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had….Truly priceless.
I can imagine, I saw the Matrix on shrooms in the summer of 99, and it was one of the best theater experiences of my life.
I was wondering if that would be fun.
I absolutely love this movie. Especially the DVD version with director's commentary makes the whole movie journey more in depth with layers. Thank you for recommending it.
This movie was an enormous success I remember everyone raving about it… “never saw”
I bought it in DVD format as soon as was available, almost 23 years in my collection!!
i remember the first time i watched this movie, it was on late night cable tv and i was got like WOW when i saw the mythical scene of Charlize Theron full frontal.. plus that ending masterclass
This was the first thing I saw when I got out of basic training. Two buddies and I went and saw it in the theater in Columbus, GA.
I think the depictions the devil goes through in the end are the best portrayal ever put on film.
I remember my parents taking me to see this movie in the theater when I was a middle school, and my mom took me out and left my dad there about halfway through due to the content 😂😂😂😂 I guess I need to revisit it now that I’m an adult.
Was nice working at a theater when this came out. I could re-watch clips from this, Playing God, and LA Confidential at the same time. When it came to the OJ verdict, I had a walkman/radio with me, so my history class was waiting for ME to announce the verdict.
i LOVE this movie!! Pacino/Milton/Satan's speech at the end is eerily coming true....life imitating art.
Still averting my eyes during those face changing scenes. Extremely unsettling. Nothing subtle about this film at all. It's another world right beneath the surface, and it's omnipresence should not be taken for granted.
Indeed.
Great movie so underrated Al Pacino was Fantastic and Keanu Reeves one of his better performances 8.6/10 ⭐⭐⭐1/2
I remember my mother being concerned for Al Pacinos soul after his end monologue! As far as Rotten Tomatoes: the audience score is the more reliable verdict if deciding on a film. In the end, give a movie a try and decide for yourself.
Well yea...the critics just rate how woke they are. People rate in entertainment value
any aggregate is a bad indication. I think you are better finding a reviewer (professional or otherwise) that you agree with often and take their recomendations (if you need to) rather than rely on the score.
The critics can often be more concerned with the 'art' of a film than the whole of it, while the audience can get caught in the nostalgia and even the socio-politics of the film, the cast, the studio. These can lead to an unwarranted positive, or negative
I also love The Devils Advocate. But Bean: The Movie is legitimately great, beyond all expectations, no need to do it dirty.
Also - The Peacemaker showing up in that list too? What a great season of releases!
Mr Bean is far scarier than Satan.
The USA Mr Bean movie sucked. Especially that unnecessary and super annoying American family that was tacked on to appeal to American rubes that won’t see any film that doesn’t pander to them. Go watch the original Mr Bean shorts from the UK series and get back to us.

Honestly, this movie may well be Keanu Reeves strongest acting performance, ever! 💗
Nah.
He was Herculean in Johnny Mnomonic!
Agreed!
He's good but it was The Matrix and Bill and Ted are still his own films.
@@Thespeedrap there's nothing special about his acting in The Matrix. Actually it's quite bland.

Man, you really tried with that Pacino accent and hell puns. Don't do it ever again.
I fell in love with Charlize after this movie (Ok, and Connie Nielsen too). Very campy, but in a good, 90's way.
I love this movie. Keanu is really good in this movie imo. And Pacino is out of his fucking mind in this movie. He's totally believable as The Devil.
ive seen it.. several times... love it..
wish they would do a sequel of it.. i think there is lots of potential for one.. and use the cast as they are now..
be perfect...
The Devils Advocate was a bit shocking when it came out. Not just because of the supernatural twist that wasn't hinted at in the marketing but the sheer volume of full frontal nudity. It was unusual for a big budget thriller.
Yeah, we get to see a full frontal of Charlize Theron 😍.
Keanu actually acted in this film. His best performance 🎭
I wasn't really aware of this being a 'best movie you never saw' type. This film has being among my favorites ever since I saw it back in 1998 (didn't catch it on theaters). I love the subway scene, never fails to crack me up; not only because of Pacino's broken Spanish, but also because the scene itself is kinda funny (in a darkly humorous way). Indeed great overall performance by Pacino.
Who never saw this? I don’t know a single person who hasn’t seen this movie. Not one.
Dude... those creepy bad trip looking demon faces still scare the ever living SHIT out of me. There is something very psychedelic about them, and actually this entire movie.
One of my favorites. I love the scene in the subway car, but this movie's a gem. Taylor Hackford is one of the most underappreciated directors in film.
The demon faces in the movie was one of the most traumatic experiences of my childhood. I watched that movie while my parents were asleep and couldn't sleep for days afterwards but didn't tell them why. I even confessed to my schools priest and asked for forgiveness because I feared I'll end up like Charlize Theron.
Hopefully they keep you up tonight too 😵😩

Saw this movie the day it came out. Been watching every since.
This is one of my favorites of all time.
Al Pacino nailed this movie for sure
Hey, Al Pacino was great in Dick Tracy! He's most of the entertainment value!
Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are the the dons in the movie Business without them Hollywood studios would be finished.
This have been on my top 5 since it came out! Such a great movie, the acting was superb!
I saw it in theatres, it did not disappoint.
Since I subscribed to this channel there has never been a "The Best Movie You Never Saw" that I haven't seen. You are pretty mainstream
The point of a title like that is to get people like you to watch it and comment that you already saw it, because the YT algorithm uses those interactions more than likes and views as a metric. We're all here to feed the machine.
Making Al Pacino and Keanu reeves play father and son in this movie was so convincing. They look like they could be father and son. It reminds me of the John wick movies with John wick and Winston having the same kind of father son relationship as Kevin Lomax and John Milton.
really miss that you could go to the movies and see something this original and this good.
Yeah I remember our high school all but shutting down briefly while the verdict was read and then an announcement was played over the intercom.
Of all movie critics, the only one I completely ignore is Rotten Tomatoes. They're terrible. When producers advertise they got a 100 on Rotten, I literally skip the movie on my list of what to watch.
I've always thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Phenomenal performance by Al Pacino.
WHO never saw? I saw this in theatres but I was born in the eighties so Keanu was always one of my favorites since '93 I wanna say, to the rest that didn't see it, WATCH IT NOW

I watch this at least once a year. Golden!
I did the same EXACT thing.. I went to go see Mr. BEAN at a Santa Cruz movie theater. I wasnt disappointed though. The scene where he screwed up the famous painting was hilarious. The only head scratcher to me was "I know What You Did Last Summer"...
Atkinson is one of the best physical actors of all time, I can't blame anyone for going to see Bean. I still watch old episodes here on the official YT channel, and it's still as funny as it was when I saw it back in the early 90s.
I rember watching this in high school in the theater and thinking 🤔 is this the same dude from Point Break,he's going places...Been a Keanu fan boy since
Great movie with a great speech
This movie has so many great performances. Keanu being the guy who thinks he knows everything, but it just a patsy. Pacino chewing scenery in the way that only Pacino can. And Charlize Theron's decline into madness and fear. This was the first time I saw her and I was blown away. So much freaking talent in this movie.

That scene with Connie Nielsen, you know... that one, very educational for 12yo me.
I've certainly seen this and I liked Bean as well. As to Simpson, as we had TVs in the classroom when I was in high school because of Channel 1, we were ordered not to use them to watch the verdict. I had no desire to anyway but as the teacher had left the room for a minute, someone turned it on anyway. Usually just being in math class was enough to piss me off without out idiots salivating over a verdict.

I can't comprehend why people haven't seen this movie I never get bored watching this movie
The opening scene is so riveting. You feel compassion for the girl who’s clearly been molested, yet are somehow able to root for Keanu Reeves’ character, Kevin, get a pedophile off.
Shame for not mentioning Taylor Hackford’s 3 hour epic saga “Blood in Blood Out aka Bound by Honor” when naming his work up to that time. A modern classic.
Buddy’s mom rented this for us a kid. And it became a favorite of mine and still is to this day.
I've seen it a hundred times. Real classic
I have seen this movie a few times and it’s well done, but creepy as well. Al Pacino is an icon and has been in a lot of great movies.
Throughout most of this movie, Al Pacino was sucking on sieves of licorice. When he wasn't, he would occasionally flick his tongue like a 'serpent'.
I love this movie. I remember seeing it on VHS. Classic in my opinion.
My wife and I have seen this movie multiple times. It's a classic in our home.
