If I had listened to this without knowing who played it my immediate assumption would have been that it was Nuno Bettencourt.
This guy is GREAT!!
Well done!!
This maybe the answer ...im very tired of digital menus looking for something more amp like ...cheers pete your reviews r always great
Pete, that new Friedman preamp footpedal sounds really good. Your demo tune demonstrated a wide variety of sounds. I especially like the cleaner, lydian section. I agree with your choice of using the EV IR for the cleaner stuff, it really gave the desired warmth. Wow, what a great demo and great new product! Thanks for this great demo.
This sounds freaking amazing, and of course, your rock compositions are dazzling. Thank you!
Another great demo, Pete. Thanks for succinctly giving us a very clear idea of this preamp pedal's capabilities. These things just keep getting better!
I've been using the BE-OD for a few years and it is one of the best piece of gear I've ever had...If not the best. Now I'm gonna try that one. I loved it!!!
Gitarist of the year does it again. Not just the review but awesome playing and inspiring licks on what's sounds like a great preamp. Thanks Pete!
Thanks for demonstrating the cleans on this thing. Demo vids rarely do this, and it sounds great! Awesome job!
Agree 💯 I have one and the cleans are amazing
Excellent video, Pete!
I’ve always loved that Friedman sound.
It’s great that we have an increasing number of options for hybrid rigs. I’ve just had a board built that combines my Quad Cortex with my Victory V4 amp pedals.
This is what keeps me coming back to your channel. In depth reviews that highlight the best in these devices. You, Beato, Pierce, ... that's my daily diet. Thanks Pete, looking forward to the next one!
Yep. Nailed it!
Those small pedal sized devices are really game changer. Sounds awesome, Pete! 🤘😎
Pete really likes this thing, he freaking BROUGHT IT in that intro!!!!!
Pete, what a great demo, including all what is important and fantastic playing/recording. Thanks a lot. And yes, this seems to be the thing I am looking for (realistic analog valve amp sound without driving a real cab, going into recording, mixer, studio monitors)
How does Pete come up with all these amazing songs and riffs? Its better music than anything released in the last 20 years
Yes. Amazing.
1. Amazing creative head for arrangement ideas.
2. GREAT ear
3. SOLID all round player
4. He's a fucking LEGEND!
Wish he would do a lesson video on how he approaches harmony
He's a monster player 😊
He copy’s me
Awesome pedal and awesome demo Pete your the best!!!
Sounds killer. Great intro tune. And congrats to Dave for nailing another one very good design. He's got the ears and the understanding of what people are looking for.. And the hability to translate this to a great design.. Amazing.
As usual, you knocked this one out of the park! I’ve been waiting for Dave to do something like this for a while. Nice!
That riffage from 0:30 to about 0:45 was straight 🔥 🔥 🔥! And nice cleans to boot (pls tell your strat I said “hi”)!!!
Great stuff Pete! Great unit, what a time to be a guitarist!
Great video Pete! That Friedman packs so much tonal variety into a small package. I'd love that! I also liked your song and love how you work Lydian into what you play even when improvising ♥ 🎸👏
Great demo, Pete. You showed off it's features really well. I'm bought one of these after watching this video.
Super great rock tune, sounds amazing with this preamp :)
love your demos Pete, and what a cool product
The British made 20W Heritage G12M20-75 are 60s era repros with paper formers (that burned out easily). Notice the extra 4kHz+ chime. I really like those. They are a good bit brighter, yet more "woody", than the later GB's with Kapton formers. I mix my G12M20-75 cab IR with a G12H30-55 cab IR for a full sounding vintage tone.
I really dig this pedal and I definitely have to get me one. Great video and demo as always Pete with great playing as usual. ✌🏻
This is what the Fryette Valvulator should have looked like, it’s much more useable in a pedal format with the IR loader. I only wish there was a “Dirty Shirley” setting… maybe that will be released as a separate pedal?? So good tho, and great demo Pete!
Thanks for demoing clean strat Jimi, that sounds just fine!
Yet another great intro
Very tasteful and so inspirational as always.
Wow such a great product. Simple approach with the 2 real tube preamp channels and the digital stuff at the end for the direct side. I have used modelers for a while, but always find myself gravitating to the Marshally tones for both high gain and clean, so this is prefect for me. Seems like a step forward from the really cool idea that was the Atomic firebox, but with the real tube/analog think for the core tone. Pete's videos always give me GAS.
I’ve been hoping specifically Dave would put out a modeler for yrs. This is more than I could have expected. I ordered one immediately. I know these will sell out so hard.
Holy balls that thing sounds fire. Nice tones, Pete.
Thanks for the music and great demo! … another one trying the preamp only out to the Fryette power station, synergy power amp, sl-68 fx return, etc… would love it! Thanks again, still the best!!!
Awesome awesome awesome….what a killer unit not to mention that you Mr. Thorn sound epic!!!! Best demo so far and probably will be……nailed it !!!!
Besides the always-helpful product presentation Pete‘s music is top notch. Sometimes I click on a new video just to listen to his intro song. Always great!
Hi Pete Awesome demo. Bought one! Hopefully get it by the weekend Cheers
Oh wow those cleans with that Strat just blew me away! I honestly was expecting all snarl and not really anything in the way of warmth.
As far as the beefy monster tones, I really didn’t expect anything less. Dave really knows how to capture those brutally beautiful monster tunes!
Ordered mine today and arriving tomorrow. Can't wait!
Pete, deadset brother, you are without a doubt one of the best guitar players I have seen. Keep up the good work, just another one of your fans from Australia
Again, such a great tune. Thanks for that, also for the in depth review. Cheers
Damn Pete… another killer Pete Thorn mini demo tune, awesome! What a great little unit too 😊
Really Dig the Hendrix riffs and amazing sounds from Daves IR-X
Omg !!!!! That Rhythm part on the yellowish guitar!! That sounds better than anything ever
That track is amazing Pete 😍👍🏼
Killer tones. Thanks for the great vid
ok, this is the perfect tool for me. exactly as you describe of not interested in menu's etc. i assume if you wanted to use stereo pedals like delay and reverb after the IR's, they'll have to be able to accept line level. then send through a passive stereo di to desk for live gigs.
I should have thanked you earlier for letting me know about this. Now I can have it on pedal board and it’s just like my Friedman head. Thanks
Calling this one Fried Voltage! In true Pete form, I am overwhelmed with information and another great video.
It’s a great preamp… but I managed to copy the channel 2, all knobs at noon, with my HX Stomp. I plan to copy channel 1 also. Running into my tube amp. Same thing, undistinguishable after fine tuning it at separate sessions. It’s a great pedal for someone without a good modeler. Sounds so good.
I got it used to clone it on my HX Stomp. It is very good. It’s the real thing. Now my Stomp sounds the exact same, I run it in the front of my clean JCM, BUT it was A LOT of tweaking over several days, taking breaks and getting it closer incrementally. The IR-X is totally worth if you prefer analog/ knobs, simplicity, instant professional tone.
would you share your preset for this?
@@andersestes yes no problem. You should send your email address here I guess, or maybe you know another way?
Genius playing and wicked demo dude🤘
Thanks!
sounds brilliant - the playing doesn't hurt.
Thanks!
I knew you would make a ripping intro track with this. Amazing as always.
Bought one, can't wait to play it.
Bravo Pete and Thank You!
Reminds me so much of how, Jimmy Page would layer his guitars. Beautiful work Pete.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Holy shit! I'm not sure what i want more, the pedal or Pete's skills! I have neither! Amazing, creative, melodic playing with what looks to be a great piece of equipment!
That one is easy - Pete's skills. Pedal sounds great, but Pete always sounds great.
Oh Pete...so damn tasty!! The solo reminded me of Kim Thayil - loved it. Great playing and review as usual!
Hey PETE!! Really GREAT SONG 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and a 4 🦄 🦄🦄🦄!! The Song! The Sound, The PreAmp and The Presentation got all 5 ⭐, the 4🦄 get ,,,. Well I'm working on That🤔 Can I help I was so blown away that I even need to Explain the Unicorns!!!😉😉😉 Enjoy your Geg My Brother and Favorite Music-In-Law 🤘🎸🤠
This looks and sounds absolutely incredible - Friedman + hot valves + digital IRs! But bit of a shame the only external switching is by MIDI - great to have the MIDI of course but always going to be a slight delay
Best I've heard/seen. Need to get it!
Hi Pete,
I play bass...
But, I love guitar as well, and I highly respect your work, your video’s and demo’s.
I watched a few videos on the new Friedman preamp ‘pedal’.
I guess it will work great with bass too (and not only the hip higher gain stuff, which I don’t particularly like. I’m a little more old school...).
I’ve been using a Koch ‘63OD pedal (as a DI with speakersim.) for bass for a few years and I like it very much, but I think the Friedman (first channel mostly) would do even better for what I’m doing.
But, in the bass community there’s not much people like you, that are not just working for specific brands, but only make videos about stuff that’s working for them. Most others just do cheap payed reviews in my bass community...
I really think the new Friedman preamp would work out great for working bassists like myself. Better than for instance the new Ampeg thing, because we know: Friedman means quality. Ampeg is not. Others are mostly the same. And many of us working bassists would love a modern tube-preamp with IR’s and real knobs to work with. Not the harder to work with digital stuff.
I play in various bands, mostly covers. Songs from The Beatles, The Beachboys, CCR to Bowie, Queen, AC/DC and Van Halen.
I really like to use guitar tube preamp pedals as DI’s (with speakersimulation if possible), because they are never too subby and work great with various pedals and with my very simple MarkBass or Taurus amp and Ampeg cabs backline: I get all of the sound with FOH without killing everyone onstage and in the clubs I play mostly.
But, I feel the new Friedman can deliver much more for me than the stuff (Koch) I use right now.
My favorite bass amps were an old Sound City 100 watt tube head and later a Marshall VB-400. Nice and silky round, but really almost a ‘70’s hifi bass sound (not too much sub low end no one needs). And also loud, too loud, way too loud...
I feel the new Friedman can give me that sound again, without being too loud onstage. A 4x12, 2x15, 2x18 and 8x10 as IR’s would be great...
I guess this simple pedal could really kill al competition in the bass community: it’s great quality, it’s philosophy is simple, it has knobs that work easily on every gig, an easy to use editor, and it’s here at a great price.
Why didn’t David get this? Too busy? I love the man’s work and watch all the video’s he’s in. But bassists love him too! 🤣
Same with Suhr. But they tend to forget about us and leave us with the cheapy bass stuff...
My opinion: if a great preamp or amp works great with guitar and has some extra headroom, it will do even better with bass.
The preamp is here. Not in need to do extra stuff to it for bass. Just add some nice IR’s.
Would you please consider doing a video on this Friedman ‘pedal’ on bass guitar. I’ve heard you playing bass really well and the music you play and love is very broad, and you have great taste. That’s great.
If anyone can do a great video on this pedal for bass, it’s you.
And you really know the Friedman stuff and Dave’s philosophy.
Please consider.
Kind regards!
🖖
Love this pedal! Great review, as always, Pete! And..... off topic, but Rock n' Roll is always better with HAIR - glad it's back (bald guy here)!!
16:06 "Oh, and by the way, it sounds nice on the bridge pickup too" ----->Understatement of the century right there my friend ........
Awesome demo!
All I can say is the combination of Pete and Dave Friedman is just unbeatable. This is a great piece of equipment…and I badly want!
Sounds great, Pete.
This is by far the best Demo of the IR-X which really shows how to use it ,my girl freind is gonna be pissed but maybe I can hide it and pretend I always had it ,Like alot of other gear LOL
The opening tune! SICK!
I am still preferring plugins in a way, but have managed some good tones from my IR-X, even though I am struggling with the gadget a bit. BTW. At first the IR-X was so hissy. I bought a current doubler cable and run the IR-X off my Strymon Zuma that runs off a good power strip that has half decent EMI/RFI filtering. It made a huge difference. Combined with putting dirt pedals in the loop of my Boss NS-2, I am get very little hiss, even when stacking a dirt pedal smorgasbord into the BE channel.
One thing I am liking is putting my Belle Epoch Deluxe delay in the loop. Just a faint echo, or even no echo, but something about that pedal changes the tone in nice way. Perhaps the delay's preamp and stuff is doing something nice to the tone. I have seen folks say they to not like the BED because it colours the tone. That's what I like about it. If they do not like that colour, then they probably will not like a real Echoplex either.
One pedal that is getting on well the IR-X is not some fancy pant boutique overdrive. It's a MojoMojo PG edition I bought online from a local pawn shop. It fattens the tone up nicely -- with the BE channel, so it really sings. A DOD250 into the 'Plexi' channel works well too, but I still can't quite get the tone of the Rising Force album after decades of trying, lol :( ---- it's quite gainy but has a clarity and cleanness to it too. I am still trying to work out how he used delay and reverb too (very spacious sounding, but not super processed sounding, i.e., it's natural).
Very Nuno-like riff. Dig it!
Well that intro just made my day!
Pete your so good, thank you!
How does this compare to the new Universal Audio OX Stomp Dynamic Speaker Emulator Stereo Pedal? I am looking forward to your thoughts! This Friedman IR-X looks and sounds great! Thanks Pete!
Thorn and Friedman ROCK !!
Pete, you have such tasteful playing dude! 🤘
Thank u!
The demo tune is rad. Nice one Pete! (Again lols)
good work man
Dammit that EBEVH sounds BadAss! Pete another great video man! Hope you're doing AOK!
the miracle, with something like that, is the power supply ... i don't know how much of the supply is internal or external, or how Dave worked that out, but that's really impressive.
Always that amazing flow of music and licks. Leaves me to wonder how many hours that guitar is in your hands every day?
9ish lol
Hi Pete! Thank you for the video!
Excelent stuff .. sounds amazing... what is the latency when recording?
O h my that sounds incredible......
I want to like it but honestly think I prefer the tone from some of those Joyo lunchbox amps more. Despite only sporting one tube each, they sound warmer and thicker to my ears.
You play great! Love the music.
Thanks!
Awesome, I actually clicked on this right after to listening to Michael's fantastic demo and man....Anyone that doesn't believe that a lot of the tone is in the hands is deaf! Both your guys demos are fantastic, yet sound quite different. So, yes, guitars sound different. Hands sound different and you guys proved a certain YT loudmouth that has been calling these 2 factors, BS, has clothy ears! hahah
Thank you, and I for one I’m totally of the belief that hands make a huge difference, the way you use them is where the tone starts
That intro song... damn, man.
Sounds great 👍
I never did manage to decide between picking up a BE-OD or BE-OD Deluxe... guess I'll just save up for an IR-X now!
As someone who dislikes modelers, but can't mic amps either (apartment), this is the perfect solution.
the official kemper slayer is here
Love that riff Pete. T x
High voltage tube pre-amp with the benefits of digital modeling...🤔oh yes! I wish Friedman made a rack version with stereo FX loop/outputs
I already want it.
Thanks Pete. Hopefully people don't start pulling the Tolex off their cabs to get better tone!
Since the 70’s! 😃
Sounds killer! Curious on how well heat management is?
Love Pete but gawd save me. Menu, Whistle and bells, boost, bright, thump switch, channel switch, master volume on and on, and on. etc. grab a guitar, cable, tuner, amp, turn up loud and use guitar volume knob, and play!
I wish it had one of those small class d power amps built in to drive a cab.
Loved how he threw in some 'Alex Lifeson' lead in the mix, bravo!😊
