My first amp was a Sound City 100W with EL34 valves. I'm a bassist so changed it for an HH transistor amp (with valve sound) as I wanted a distortion free sound. This went into a 4x12 and 2x15 CMI cabinets. The 2x15 cabinet body was made with compressed paper. Together with my Precision and Rotosound roundwounds it sounded like a piano.

I was in total awe all along this video mate , two of my fav tech-gurus talking freely together and no one around rolling their eyes. Loved it. By the way of 70's durability Vs security , end of last year I had a new customer calling my mobile and exploited with a surreal trembling voice : " So you're Dave huh? I have your business ticket and .. well... I've got F****ING ELECTROCUTED!!!" Ends up his beloved vintage amplifier (not mentioning brand , hope you'll understand) had one of those sixties fashioned capacitor used as net-hum filter , its insulation saluted the world for a more ethereal existence and in consequence the glorious long lived cap decided to discharge volta arcs in its neighborhood. Tesla himself would have been hitten. Recap your amps sometimes folks!

It has the feel and the tone I was looking for for ages. If someone gave me a Twin Sister I might consider swapping but I don’t need two channels at the moment. One of the things that surprised me about the DS40 is that I love it clean. Don’t get me wrong, it is amazing dialled up but I wasn’t expecting to love the cleans as much as I do. Thanks Dave for making such a wonderful amp.

I made the dreaded JCM900 Dual Reverb sing by pushing it until the power tube became the main provider of overdrive, the problem is that it will wear down the tubes pretty quickly but that's a great sound. Don't expect a tight low end though. It gets quite spongy. I'd do it more often if the tubes weren't so damn expensive these days.

His advice is totally solid. Jim designed the Lead 12 head to be an 800 that had more manageable volume and tubes. Sold one for nothing and then picked it up again for next to nothing. High input, dime the volume and adjust your gain to taste. Takes pedals surprisingly well. Since this is essentially an 800, Dave's advice to crank it is completely valid. There is a point where all of a sudden it just opens up. Btw, it's crazy loud for the size it is. Yeah, you want a poor man's 800? Grab a marshall lead 12 head. You're welcome.

RE: your question "why is it i love the JCM 900 and everyone else hates them?" Well, having gigged 3 of each my take on it and what i too like the 900 is that the 900 cuts thru a band mix in a certain way where the 800 can get lost in the mix. I think a lot of people like the 800 because they play at home and the 800 sounds better then the 900 solo. But in a band mix the 900 IMO cuts better/right. Si i assume you gigged both like me and that brought you to the same conclusion as me. Playing out of a band mix at home or whatever, i would choose the 800. But the 800 mushed out in a band mix where the 900 punched thru with tight bass and good balance and clarity. I believe solid state is NOT the devil some say and by combining it with tubes you can much more easily dial in the tone when designing an amp.

Jerry is my sonic role model. That dude has such an immense range, and his higher gain sound is absolutely crushing and heavy. Listen to Psychotic Break from his 2nd solo record Degradation Trip and you'll know what I'm talking about immediately. I have his Epi Wino Custom and it is amazing as far as QC, look and feel. The neck profile is based off his personal wine red custom with some slight modification, and it's one of the best feel and playability neck profiles I've ever played on a Les Paul. I want his sig JJ amp from Friedman but my God does Dave price his amps at the absolute top of the heap lol. That's alright because I can get super close for A LOT less using Bogner preamps or pedals and you can get those used for a steal. Rock on man, you have great taste in amps and players!

@@Naughtforeye yes absolutely love that material from Jerry ... I love his guitar tone on so many tracks he's done!!!! I mean with tons of options for smaller 15-20 watt tube heads for under 6oo dollars it's a hard choice lol...I mean the peavey 6505 mini... The 5150 mini..... Joyo mjolnier..... Randall el diablos.... But I'd go for the Friedman even tho it's a bit more price wise... I just love a good tone man lol....I got bit by the Asian tone bug recently lol and it's infection is completely incurable so looks like I'm screwed hahaha😝😝😝😝🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟😜😜😜😜😜

I had two JMP's with SD1 and boss graphic and an ibanez flanger in 86, then the DS1 ala Gary Moore like you said!

Jerry C's rig is great and has a great tone. I'd love to have the money to buy and try a Friedman amp.
I wonder if he has any plans for building and manufacturing any bass amps, I'd like to nominate myself to demo and give feedback on 1 of those!!!!
Thanks for the interview... I love hearing the history of amp guitar and bass companies

Dude Jerry's sound is my favorite. He has such a wide sonic range, but his core sound is so heavy and crushing, but without sounding like any other "heavy" high gain amp brand. Yes Dave does make his signature JJ amp, but that's only a small piece of the puzzle lol. I have his signature Epi LP Custom wino and it is hands down the best playing and looking guitar Epi has ever made IMO. The neck profile is slim and fast, but not so skinny and flat that it kills your hand from cramps because you have nothing to hold onto like other slim necks. I also rotate 2 different sets of pups in it, an SD JB bridge and 59' neck and Gibson 498t/490r set and I get everything I could want outta those 2 sets. If I'm going for Jerry's sound I use Bogner pedals and I can get very close, I want to find an old Bogner Fish preamp that he used a lot during his Degradation Trip album which to me is ultimate Cantrell tone. I have played the Friedman JJ and it is absolutely great, but it is sooooo damn expensive just like all his stuff is. I just wish Dave had options that weren't all completely hand wired, basically custom made boutique amps. I could get a truly custom built tube amp to my exact specs for less than what Dave charges, in fact I have lol. Nonetheless he does make great sounding stuff, but most working musicians including myself can't afford it, and after all isn't that what music gear is supposed to be made for? Keep rockin man 🤘🤘🤘

An amplifier makes something more loud without changing the signal ideally. It's different kinds of fucking up.

Warren please review the plugin Reso. It is the next level up to Soothe2. I know I’m not anybody significant for you to take plug-in advice from but as soothe is so important in todays production I definitely think it’s worth you attention

I bought a 1983 Marshall 2203 800 back in 2012 for $450. I was 18 and stoked as shit lol. Still have it but it needs a lot of correction. I've learned a ton since then but it's definitely not roached. I can't believe it survived me gigging with it but it did. Prior owner did some shotty work but it is what it is and the board and 80% of the amp is still untouched. Transformers are still good. It's no plexi but not bad for what I have in it. I know a great local tech that can fix er up. Cool video

JCM 800 were loud amps and the second best choice for mods after JMP master models.
