I had that situation when I was attending the piano class as a singer student. I spent several weeks learning my Chopin so that the piece would be just enough ready to be worked on and she criticized me everywhere during the first class so I started crying. Ofc for her as a professional pianist it was easy to just sight read it but I actually had put a lot of effort before coming to class. She said, "I realize now that you need to get praise from time to time and not just criticism." And she spoke to me in a much milder manner after that. She was a good teacher and that Chopin turned out pretty good as well.

I don't play any instrument, but man is this giving me dance lessons flashbacks. Once we were practicing jumps and I couldn't get it right, so I spent five minutes gathering courage to ask my teacher for suggestions on how I could improve (I was very shy and already had self esteem issues). She just said "attending more classes would help, but since you can't be bothered to put in any effort..." I was shocked, because she knew exactly why I couldn't attend all classes (I had weekly tests at school at the same time as the lessons). I practiced at home whenever I could to try and make up for it. I pushed through the rest of the class and then cried in the bathroom with my hand over my mouth. Those were some of the most painful seconds of my life. I felt so bad I almost quit. I'm better now, but that women crushed me hard.
If you were my friend and I saw that infront of me I woulda been like: BOIIII YOU BETTER HOLD YO TONGUE BEFORE I RIP IT OUT AND STOP BLABBERING AND DO YOUR JOB INSTEAD!! But fr, that's so stupid to say, because that doesn't make you better but stops you from enjoying what you are doing.
I’ve been through a very similar experience. Basically that, but with a lot of fat shaming cuz I was a chubby kid. So what if landed slightly heavier that the others, but even then there were some who still landed heavier than me but since they were ‘skinny’ they got away with it. My teacher was basically the Aussie version of Abby Lee but without the reality TV and instead of as much competition between the girls, although we still had a pyramid-esque style hierarchy, and more body shaming and racism. I turned away from that dance studio and am now doing a completely new style of dance, ballroom, and I love it.
@I am a-maize-ing, oh, that’s so relatable, the fingering...😭 my teacher can be mean, but she is a really good teacher, and helped me win so many competitions!!!😁 so even if everyone that has mean teachers feels like they want to give up, don’t give up, because they have good intentions, and they are the teachers who can help you be successful!
My teacher once said that. I replied "Yes" just to antagonize him. He replied "Good. Jazz is the last refuge for the talentless musician." I am an engineer now.
@@korosuke1788 Brooo "the last refuge for talentless musicians" Me, a jazz student that works her butt off to perfect the art, practices like a madman and dedicated hard work and life for jazz: am I a joke to you?
You forgot the life lesson teacher. The one, who when you don't practice enough, will go into a 20 min lecture about how hard work is important in life, and how when he was a child he was very similar to you, and how one even made him see everything differently and he is trying to be that moment for you, and etc. I had a guy would would go into long stories/lessons all the time for the strangest things, not sure if that is normal or just my teacher.
umm At least you don't have to play? I have 3 hours rehersals for my orchestra and it can get a little boring but I really like the conductor and the songs.
I've been a language teacher, and I've been like that only with students with huge potential who waste their (and my time) by not practicing enough. I'm guessing you're better than you think, and your teacher unseuccessfully tried to motivate you.
@@korosuke1788 Eh at the time, I had been playing an instrument for 8 years, and hated my school band director (basically, even when I improved he would still move me down). While I still liked my lesson teacher, it was hard to get motivated. So eventually, I stopped playing that instrument (trumpet) and picked up guitar. Its too bad I had to quit since I had been with that instructor for so long, but the instrument just wasn't a great fit for me. I've been with it for like 7 years now and its so much better being able to play independently or in smaller groups. Much easier to stay motivated as well with all the online tools such as free sheet music and tabs along with simply more songs out there for it.
My teacher is the first one. Always frustrated and stressful. He even makes fun of every single word I say and every question I ask so that it became so depressing and annoying as hell. I quit him and decided to continue lessons with someone who is worth the money and he told me that whatever is the character of a music teacher and whatever circumstances to do in their life they don't have the right to get personal with a student or yell or even make fun of them whether they are minors or adults. So I realized that the music class I take makes me doubt my self and shakes my self confidence just because of the crazy disrespectful teacher. I'm sure I will become excellent with a good teacher so I switched.
I hope things are going great with your new teacher! I'm a language teacher and agree 100%. Stress is bad for learning and cruelty wouldn't be worth it even if it were effective. Cheers to you both and boo to the jerk.
My primary school violin teacher the exact same. She even swore at us during orchestra sometimes because we were, and I quote, “So shit we’d go nowhere so we might as well quit now.” But my high school teacher is way too nice, like almost toxically so, and in my lesson times, it’ always my part ender who gets all the attention because she gets stuff wrong (pitch, rhythm etc) more often than me. So, most of my lesson I’m just standing there like 😐 as my partner gets corrected.
*me finishing a piece* My piano teacher: Starts talking and tells me how I can improve me: *looks at her face so I don’t seem disrespectful* Her: WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT MY FACE?! DO I HAVE NOTES ON MY FACE?
whenever my teacher caught me looking up he would always say "whats up there? are you looking for god? why would he want to help you?" lmao he was great
Let us take a moment to acknowledge all the music enthusiasts who've had to face an abusive teacher. Thinking about those who've had to detach themselves from music for a long time for this. I'm proud of what you have learnt so far and whether or not you have completely grown stronger over your unpleasant experiences, Music is for you. Have a good day! Much love.
Thank you, I’ve only had one good voice teacher and it’s my current one. I love her and she pushes me to do better, but she also doesn’t let me beat myself up. I’ve cried in front of her out of pure frustration and she was there for me. Before her, I was belittled and insulted by any music teacher I had. I literally quit choir because my director would make fun of me and tell me I wasn’t talented enough.
:( thank you so much. i always wanted to pursue music but in all honesty i had a horrble, emotionally abuse teacher who crushed my hopes and dreams. it's so sad and i can't play an instrument without wanting to cry all because of him. he truly ruined my life.
My choir teachers have what I like to call the Paternal/Maternal method. Whenever we don't practice or we keep making the same mistake, they go on an "I'm so disappointed in all of you" lecture followed by "Do guys you still wanna be here?" and "Am I doing something wrong? Tell me because I can call in a new teacher for this choir" and they walk out and we all get teary eyed until the teacher comes back in and gives us a life lesson using Philosophy and Analogies.
Funny story: Our orchestra teacher was going on vacation for a week so he got a substitute, but the substitute was a choir teacher who had literally never seen an orchestra play. So when we were tuning she was like why don't you guys open your mouths and sing each pitch. We were all like uhhhhhhhhh I don't know how to sing, so for the rest of the orchestra rehearsals that week we learned how to sing in a choir that was the worst week of orchestra rehearsals in my life. (I joined orchestra so I didn't need to sing)
I mean technically in an orchestra you should all learn to sing your tuning note together and then play together starting from the oboes up. Especially wind instruments. Every musician should be able to hear pitch in their head internally because pitch is first and foremost something that comes from the player and not the instrument. This means that finding more and more ways to make sure you’re all hearing the same pitch, singing for example, can be very beneficial for the overall tuning of the ensemble. Now I can’t speak as much for strings as I wish I’d like to, but being able to hear pitches is necessary for every musician. So basically if you’re a musician sing. And embrace it.
Man, reading all this crying horror stories makes me appreciate my super cool teacher .He's very patient and encouraging. Even funny sometimes. I'll never take him for granted.
Same here! Except by the time I got in my junior/senior year I had a pretty cool orchestra teacher. I wish I had his class when I was a freshman. I had this one teacher in 9th grade..he had us playing Brandenburg and repeatedly too. I was so stressed back then 😭💀 it still haunts me till this day, but I still love the piece. My 9th grade teacher was so nit picky about sightreading, and it kinda made me not like sightreading now lol. I am dyslexic so it's kinda hard to read numbers, and words sometimes so I remember him giving us these work sheets of sightreading measures for hw and I cried a lot since I always got low marks. My last orchestra teacher was so cool I miss those days. Always cherish the days of learning! It's so fun, but also nerve-wracking at the same time lol.
my piano teacher is always so kind, but when I get it like wrong 10 times and I repeat and repeat and I still get it wrong, she starts stressing out but she’s still trying to be kind so its kinda scary cuz it’s like “ IT’s G nO d rEPeAT iT... p l e a s e :)
Pippa Janidlo, I used to go to a different cello teacher and one time, it was so stressful, I actually started crying in front of my teacher. It was so embarrassing. Now I go to a different cello teacher and everything is perfect.
A piano teacher I once had got pissed off because I wrote and compose music and symphonies...he said music is not like creating. But how does music even exist then lol
lol did you not know that when there comes a month that has two full moons, and the second of those full moons is a blood moon, a few thousand pieces of music appear scattered around the arctic circle waiting to be found? people don't _write_ music, that'd be absurd!
My teacher is a pretty good teacher, but sometimes he would get distracted with telling me stories about history or about some of his friends, for example once I was working on a piece called heigh-ho, and he went on a 2 minute story tell about how the original story was much more brutal than the one we know now. Also I learnt a bunch of history things that happened.
“1 hour scales 2 hours studies 1 hour of concerto 1 hour Bach 2 hours of chamber music 3 hours of orchestra” that is just 10 hours, not the ling ling 40 hours of practice
My schedule: 15 mins scales 15 mins studies 1 hour of concertos 1 hour of violin solos 2 and a half hours of orchestral rehearsals It’s less than 10 hours 🤦🏻♀️
I remember one teacher made me cry so much at my violin lesson that I literally didn't want to go back to the music school... and I didn't attend rehearsals anymore... I was so hurt... anyway, it's been 20 years and that moment is still alive in my mind :(
I cried once at my violin class when I was nine. It wasn't even because of the teacher. My mom had been screaming at me for an hour about my practice. When I went to the lesson, the first thing the teacher asked was, 'how was your practice?' I received a death glare from my mom and I just...cried 👩🏻🦯

What makes a good teacher: 1. He is strict with musicality / discipline but kind and funny as a person. 2. He / She shows you exactly how to practice. 3. He / She talks about bow technique, about vibrato and after you try this, your piece is a lot easier. 4. He/She gives you the love for music, you can feel that there is a lot love for music. 5. He gives you the courage to try again and again and again. He speaks that you are on a good way. 6. He/She loves you and the other pupils. 7. There is a much discipline, but also a lot of fun and laughter. And sometimes you can have also a chat about something else.
My teacher is a mix of the philosophical one, the overly supportive, and the one that makes analogies. He also really teaches me well in a great way! :D
My singing teacher is extremely energetic. She has a perfect pitch so when the entire choir is singing, she just goes "You are singing sharp, you're flat, SING IN THIS NOTE." But she is really sweet and I have been learning from her for 8 years now.
Pink Hisoka I have perfect pitch and the only person that understands is my piano/vocal teacher. It gets interesting when they need a note, expecting me to go to the piano but NO. I just hum the note.
damn i wish my choir teacher had perfect pitch that would be so cool, but one year we had a girl who had it and we never needed to bring a pitch pipe anywhere
*the teacher that teaches in his house that's always either really hot or cold and makes it impossible to play with the temperature because your fingers are literally frozen or you're about to die of a heat stroke*
Take advice from me. After 3 years of Private Peripatetic Violin Lessons, and then 3 more years of teaching myself before that.. The most essential thing one can do.. Is Practice.
As a person who played piano for 9 years and has had 4 different teachers, I have experienced all of these at some point 😭😂 my school music teacher, who was primarily an opera singer and the only instrument she could slightly play was the ukele, trying to teach me piano was especially painful
Teacher: Wtf man, why don't you have everything I asked you to play down perfectly. All of your scales should be at 150 bpm eighth followed by sixteenths. Why is it only 145? I'm so disappointed in you. You know what, you should go find another private teacher if you're gonna be like that! PRACTICEEE MOREEEE!!!! Me: I had marching band, hw, a life, and I still practiced 40 hours a day. Teacher: STOP MAKING UP EXCUSES! IT'S YOUR FAULT! YOU SHOULD FIND ANOTHER PRIVATE TEACEHR!
I feel like my viola teacher falls under the “overly nice one” category. Even though I played like shit over the last few years that I had him, he still encouraged me and was very kind even though I didn’t deserve it one bit. There have definitely been moments where I had been close to crying not necessarily because of him, but rather because I felt so bad for not pushing myself harder in the past. (Of course that could be due to the fact that I’m quite literally the definition of self-critical).
I've seen a teacher like that. She studied with some beginner singers for less than 4 months and after the exam she told them how amazing their singing was. I mean it's a good thing to encourage but her praise went way too much over the top - their singing wasn't even close to being as amazing as the epithets she used. The bad part is that it might mislead people into getting a false impression of their actual level.
last week my teacher yelled at me for not practicing then she went on a rant about how I need to put in 100% effort because 'it's like marriage, I'm putting in 100% but he's not and now I'm divorced'. I think she had a rough week.

Regarding tears in a lesson, I did horse-riding for a while and there was this little girl who was always (sometimes quite literally) fighting with the stubborn Shetland pony. That horse was the only one small enough for her, but he was a handful. The kid was on the sensitive side and cried regularly under the strict commands from the teacher and the additional stress from the stubborn pony. At some point she grew tall enough for a different horse and had a first test lesson on an elderly sports pony. From that day on she was all smiles and confidence and also suddenly got along with the teacher. I don't know if one can relate this to learning a musical instrument, but I suppose the very instrument you play can make a big difference as well.

It was exhausting.

I don't play any instrument, but man is this giving me dance lessons flashbacks. Once we were practicing jumps and I couldn't get it right, so I spent five minutes gathering courage to ask my teacher for suggestions on how I could improve (I was very shy and already had self esteem issues). She just said "attending more classes would help, but since you can't be bothered to put in any effort..."
I was shocked, because she knew exactly why I couldn't attend all classes (I had weekly tests at school at the same time as the lessons). I practiced at home whenever I could to try and make up for it. I pushed through the rest of the class and then cried in the bathroom with my hand over my mouth. Those were some of the most painful seconds of my life. I felt so bad I almost quit.
I'm better now, but that women crushed me hard.

I’ve had a very similar teacher in dance and violin so I relate
If you were my friend and I saw that infront of me I woulda been like:
BOIIII YOU BETTER HOLD YO TONGUE BEFORE I RIP IT OUT AND STOP BLABBERING AND DO YOUR JOB INSTEAD!!
You forgot about the overly mean one.

umm At least you don't have to play?
Ugh I hate those dramatic teachers
I got this most from highschool band teachers. Minimum once a week with the 'i'm so disappointed' speech.
Being constantly threatened that all arts will be removed from the school curriculum probably creates a lot of passive-aggressive teachers
That sounds exactly my choir teacher in highschool
I thought that was every choir teacher??? Lol
Funny story:
Our orchestra teacher was going on vacation for a week so he got a substitute, but the substitute was a choir teacher who had literally never seen an orchestra play.
Camera Girl and I joined choir because according to my band teacher I sucked at flute
NerdGeek Cosplay Wow
NerdGeek Cosplay
I say ignore that teacher and do what you love.

Even though I played like shit over the last few years that I had him, he still encouraged me and was very kind even though I didn’t deserve it one bit. There have definitely been moments where I had been close to crying not necessarily because of him, but rather because I felt so bad for not pushing myself harder in the past.

@@cindy85 THAT WAS MY TEACHER TOO, and she was super rude as well 😒
my teacher lol, he never cares, and he teaches me classical guitar when he doesn't even play or have a guitar, he plays the violin T_T
Do I have a problem if my teacher is like all of them?
Fam if your teacher is like all of them combined I think you need to get outta there
OMG SAME MINE IS JUST ALL OF THIS
The best kind of teacher is the nice one who puts you on the spot. You know they know their shit and are genuinely interested in making you better, but they are also supportive and understanding.
Mine is all of them😂😂
I think there needs to be a healthy blend of all of these kinds. Except for not playing the same instrument. That is a problem that cannot be mended.
