  • You may find lots of sewing machine feet in sewing tables, sewing carrying cases, and other locations when you purchase a vintage sewing machine. What do these feet do? Why are there so many types? What feet fit which machines? This video attempts to help unravel at least some of the confusion around sewing machine feet and what the term "Shank" means and why it will matter to you.

Thanks. Very helpful illustrations and explanations of low, high and slant shank machines and presser feet.

I have a Singer Imperial Model 7043 (bought in the late 1980s) which is also a slant shank. The first machine I bought (Singer Touch & Sew -- 700 series) is a slant shank.

Part of the stuff that I got when I inherited the machines I have was some feet from a machine my mom got rid of. She kept all the feet all the attachments, everything like that. She even kept the little needle plate that went to that machine. I believe it was a dressmaker but at the shank on it I believe is a high shank. It doesn't fit anything else. The two sewing machines I have inherited are both low shank which is good because I can find the feet pretty easy

Sometimes, you may come across attachments that are vintage, but do not fit the machine they are found with. This is fairly common because folks often shared accessories or gave them away to anyone they knew that was a sewer.

Thanks for the information on the Kenmore high shank machines. I thought that was standard on all Kenmores. Mine has most of the attachments and I was considering letting it go as stitch quality is lower than that of my 503a. I only bought it because of all the chrome. I will keep it a while longer now.

Thank you. Before this video, I was lacking an understanding of the various shank height styles i.e. low, high, angled, ultra-high, etc. Again, thanks!

I forgot to mention...the Free is one of those machines with top of the foot attachments. All the Greist feet I went through looked the same but were of different minuscule differences at the connection. It is so weird!!

Hi, My shank has come off my foot. I have the low shank version that is all the way to the left in the video. I don't know how they separated and don't know how to get them back together. Thanks for any help

I hope you reply this comment. I am in Nigeria and getting a singer slant shank is quite difficult, do you think using an industrial presser foot would work with a singer slant shank? Mine is 93220 solid state sewing machine. Thanks

Great video! Would you happen to know the shank type on a Singer 307G2?

I have some Viking Designer feet I
would like to use on a vintage Singer 237. Is there an adaptor I can purchase to use the Viking feet on the Singer machine?

Would my Kenmore singer 158.17031 be considered high shank?

I own a singer 201-2 and it’s a screw on low shank foot. I want to know if I can get a low shank snap on adapter to use snap on presser feet because I’m tired of screwing and unscrewing presser feet. If I can please link me to that low shank snap on adapter.

Amazon has them, as well as other online retailers. Just google Low shank adapter for presser foot.

my 1957 singer 201-2 has a problem i think. I just got it and wanted an original presser foot, it came with some side adjustable thing. I purchased a low shank from a vintage parts company specifically for a 201-2 and I just got it today. I put it on and it is too high, won't even come close to the bed. Is there an adjustment I can do or has somebody put a different presser bar on it??? I hope you can help me figure it out. Thank you. Steve Hines

Can I change the shank of my machine to a different style shank?

Hello. The only adaptor I am aware of for doing this is for when you want to use different feet on old style Berninas. Other viewers may know of others. If there is no adaptor, I'm not aware of how this could be done without harming the machine.

Watch the snap on feet. There is a move to make snap on shanks for each of the styles where the feet are interchangable for all. Not high quality feet, but there may be competition to improve that.

I just remembered that greist made some shanks with a keyhole foot attachment. I have one for my slant-o-matic and my Kenmore ultra-high shank and the spoon hemmers are interchangeable.

I was recently given a vintage Fleetwood Zig-Zag model e399. I'm interested in replacing the vintage shank with a modern one that can accept the different feet, especially the more narrow feet. right now it has a zig-zag foot and shank as one piece. what shank would you recommend.

Hello Robert. Since your machine has ZigZag capability, you should have a number of options for using more modern feet. FYI, your machine is "Low Shank" and that is not something you can or should change. However, there are a number of modern Low Shank attachments that can work with your machine. As you shop online or in a literal store, be sure to ask if it can be used on an older machine. Many of these can. I know that there are Low Shank attachments that take clip-on style feet etc.

Thank you so much for your informative videos. I received 2 bags if feet for non singer machines. I have a Free No 5 treadle which needs just a plain sewing foot so I can sew with it. Believe it or not, only 5 of the many feet in those bags fit the Free. About 15 fit my vintage White Rotary. None fit My Singer 27. Bottom line is, how do I find the specific feet for my Free? All the Greist feet do not fit except the 5. Is there a way to specific way to I'd these? I did not see any indication. I dont want to order a foot that looks like it fits but does t and continue with my collection of misc unusable feet??

You might try ordering from vendors that specialize in vintage feet and accessories. Bonanza.com is a site where I have found a lot of salvage parts. It may take a while but you should be able to find more feet for your Free machine.
