How a Medical Mystery in Guam Led to a New Approach to Alzheimer’s Disease

- As part of his reporting for “The Last Alzheimer’s Patient” documentary, CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta travels to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to learn more about an ethnobotanist’s audacious theory on treating Alzheimer’s disease. After Dr. Paul Cox, founder of the nonprofit Brain Chemistry Labs, discovered the source of a mysterious neurodegenerative disease afflicting people in Guam, those clues led him to a novel way of thinking about Alzheimer’s and a simple amino acid called L-serine. His novel theory and possible treatment are now being tested in Mild Cognitive Impairment patients at Houston Methodist. Watch the full documentary on CNN’s “The Whole Story” premiering on May 19 at 8p ET/PT and streaming on MAX on June 18. #cnn #News #health
Listen to how the true scientist answers questions. He doesn’t make overly enthusiastic claims. He didn’t just endorse L-Sering, he was is specific speaking to what the question was, what they did to investigate, what they tried and simply what the result was. THIS is doing your research looks like and why trusting actual trained and practicing experts is so important.
That's right.
Yes! Exactly what I was thinking!
To go even further, this way of assessing information is, in my opinion, the best way to deal with misinformation.
In fact, the term misinformation is problematic as it's a subjective label that suggests that it's objective, but it's not. Galileo Galilei was thought to be spreading misinformation in his time.
So the best way to protect yourself against misinformation is to assess it.
Assessing information is becoming the new Darwinian filter.
Exactly I was very impressed by the scientific ethic of his responses. This is how scientists I know talk but so frequently what we hear on TV are salesman instead of scientists. This was excellent.
Great comment. For the record, it is L-Serine. It can be synthesized in the human body under normal physiological circumstances, making it a nonessential amino acid. But given the prevalence of neuro cognitive disorders in the world now and all of the toxins we are exposed to these days may be humans need more than we used to in order to stay healthy.
@@ErikBongers Importantly, Galileo was persecuted by ignorant religious leaders who did no work to replicate or invalidate his work. Cranks and their fans like to drag Galileo out whenever they get criticized for spreading misinformation by claiming they’re challenging “scientific dogma” (which is not a thing) just like Galileo challenged religious dogma. Or “just asking questions” - which they pose to laypeople and journalists, rather than the experts. The best way to deal with misinformation, IMO, is say “don’t try to convince me - I’m not an expert. Wake me when you’ve convinced the experts.”
As someone who was born into a family with a high rate of this disease, this is a breath of fresh air and I hope more advances like this will save millions. Thank you so much for your work Dr. Paul

2:57 This video said that in this case, the cause was blue-green algae, also known as the cyano bacteria, from the sea. "It contains toxins, such as BMAA."
Bats can't catch a break. Stop eating them.
Eat foods with L-Serine, such as Sweet potatoes, Edible seaweed, Nuts, especially peanuts, almonds, and walnuts, Chickpeas, and Lentils.
Bats have the best immune system of all mammals, that's why they're carriers of diseases
Peanuts are legumes, not nuts
Completely wrong, these vegetables contain many poisons and sugars, plants do not want to be eaten and people do not know what damage they will cause over years of eating them. There are now a number of houses in America that treat people simply by letting them eat meat and heal people or improve them at a distant stage.
@@danielmartin7838 so are chickpeas and lentils, he was just enumerating food rich in L-serine.
Chamorros don't eat bats like our relatives did decades ago. This film is somewhat inaccurate and the pics they show are definitely from decades ago. So to say, "now we can save our children", is somewhat misleading. FYI

Amazing research and reporting
Please keep us updated. If it can be prevented, I would be willing to do whatever can help prevent it.
Wow, I wonder if this might apply to other mental conditions like schizophrenia and anxiety. I keep hoping we can find answers in things we can control like diet.
If you read up a bit about it, you will see that it is also for those conditions and help you to sleep better too.
There's a kind of schizophrenia where a part of the brain pushes up against the skull. I don't know if all forms of schizophrenia are like that.
Anxiety is correlated to the gut microbiome and there is a lot of study into it right now. I believe there are even diets that reduce anxiety due to after a handful of months they change the gut biome. Anxiety is interesting because it's also psychological, a blend of both the gut and the mind. Usually both aspects need to be addressed. On the psychological side both CBT and DBT both are proven in studies to work, and both of them I believe are 12 sessions, 1 session a week. A lot of progress can be done quite quickly thankfully.
Good luck with everything.
The one thing missing in most research about different cognitive diseases is that alzheimers is much like heart disease in that it is plaque build up in the brain that is preventable by diet.
So, it's encouraging to see one about an amino acid that you get in food.
Wow!!!!! What a breakthrough in medicine !! I see a possible Nobel prize in his future ! I was born into this potential threat. I hope this study becomes a realty for prevention and treatment !!

If safe, why not add it to your diet?
I would have asked the researcher, has this changed your diet?
He mentioned a mix of ALS and Alzheimer's symptoms. Neurodegenerative symptoms. I never knew those could be related.
Neurological conditions are all toxin related and often have pathogenic activity involved. Clearing the metals and toxins from the brain and improving the body's immune system are crucial to recovery. Sweet potatoes clear metals out while boosting the immune system. Bananas and citrus are plentiful in tropical regions. Papaya, mango, coconut, jackfruit, etc. are also big healers.

This should have CC enabled.
I remember reading about lydigo bodig disease in The Pacific Daily News back in the 1980s. Then the theory was that flour made from the kernel of the fadang palm (cycad) was the cause. So the cycad is still considered the source, but the route of ingestion has been more specifically identified.

I wish that it hadn't been necessary to test on animals. We do have other ways of finding this information. But thank you for showing that if we pay attention to our diet we can find both the causes and the cures of our diseases.
As he said, it wasn't ready to be used by humans yet. Unfortunately, people who have the disease are in no state to be aware of the legalities of being a test project. You can become an organ donor upon death with a preference and a signature; maybe if a person is of sound mind and body they can decide to be part of testing if and when that time comes before it happens. All it would take is a preference and a signature...

I think it would be wise to look at the long term study done out of Mayo Clinic...nearly 50 years. You will present a more scientific point of view. This didn't begin in 2003; I worked with the people in Guam in 1996. A ton of information that should be added here; this is quite incomplete.
It's only part of the documentary apparently. Don't get your undies in a bundle; research that is being done now, it's implied that it's built on what came before.
There are many toxins that can contribute to one getting Alzheimer. The principal creator of some of these Toxins is the Fructose in our diet which has several downstream effects from Obesity, Insulin Resistance, high blood pressure, arteriolosclerosis and Alzh to name a few. The brain itself gets little direct Fructose, but its downstream effect of Insulin Resistance results in neuron mitochondria being full of glucose causing the creation of ROS (Reactive Oxidative Stress) substances. With the excess glucose and use of ATPs Fructose is created in the mitochondria. With a lack of ATPs (the energy of the cell/Neron), essentially starvation, it starts to protect itself in a manner by the creation of amyloid and tau as there are insufficient ATPs to keep the proteins from misfolding. It is very complex, but the main factors, first was the increase consumption of Sugar from sugar cane (1 Glucose + 1 Fructose) and then in 1965 with the development of high Fructose Corn Syrup which is cheaper to manufacture than Sugar. - Now 80% of folk are overweight, 60% higher Uric Acid levels than in blood of a person from 1890, (Uric Acid directly causes higher blood pressure) and the development of Alzh later in life. RUclips has many videos with Dr. Johnston and Dr. Lustig discussing this topic. Do a search Ford and Fructose or Lustig and Fructose. (Eat an apple, don't drink Apple Juice or Soda.) An average person can eat 10 to 12 grams of Fructose a day which is equivalent to 24 grams of Sugar. Less than a can of coke cola. Beyond that it has a cascading effect on the body's metabolism including increase appetite and the signaling of the body to convert glucose to fat in the liver (similar to the effect of over drinking which causes fatty liver disease).
Not to mention, a regular pop is around 40-45 grams (8-9teaspoons) of hfcs per 12! ounces. Meaning a 20 oz bottle of pop is 13-15 teaspoons of high fructose corn syrup. I'm getting nauseated just thinking about it.
When I would eat at Burger King I always ordered a Large Coke 40oz (they recently downsized) which was larger than the McDonalds large at 32oz. If I only knew how much damage I was doing. Thank goodness for lots of Ice.
I lived in Guam in the early 70s, and remember that there was alot of ALS. cases.

Lytico-bodig (ALS-PDC). My father died of it in 1996. Many of our US vets based in Guam developed it. I found out about it in 1991 from an army medic pre-med student who had just finished researching it in Guam with WHO. Until then, my father had been diagnosed with atypical Parkinsonism dementia - an umbrella term for we don't know what he has.
