    The RD1 is just lovely! I only noticed I was left eye dominant when I picked up photography 4 years ago. I had to train my right eye because it makes aiming long lenses at birds much easier.

      And wow! That's quite a feat to train yourself to shoot with the less dominant eye, congrats!

      I apologize for my delay in getting back to your comment! Yes, a very unique camera indeed, but also still very expensive even after all these years. I had to wait over a year for a copy that was within by budget. I set an alert on Ebay so that I would get notified when there were new listings for the R-D1. And yes, I'm glad I was able to add some sample photos! Thanks for watching!

    I had one from new, when it was launched. fabulous camera. the one main issue I had was that the rangefinder calibration went out twice in two years, just from normal travel, not dropping it or anything. It isn't a straight forward operation to recalibrate it and after the second time I paid to have it fixed I sold it.

    I wish I could get one, or that Fujifilms X-Pro4 would resemble the mechanical operation. It seems like the perfect combo of mechanical no-screen operation without having to spend money on film. I love my Nikon FE’s with their full mechanical film advance lever. Using cameras without that mechanism always feels like something is missing. Kindo like a bolt-action rifile, it makes you slow down and choose when to shoot your photo. Cuz you don’t use any burst etc

    truly a gem of a camera, this 1:1 viewfinder experience sounds amazing! And wow amazing pictures at the end - the colors look lovely, how much where they edited?

    • @niogomez
      @niogomez  2 года назад +1

      Hello! Sorry for the late reply on your comment!
      Yes, I think the 1:1 would be great for a right-eye dominant shooter (but it's not so bad for us left-eye users lol)
      And thank you for the kind words about the sample photos!
      For editing, I take the files into Lightroom CC, I use a USB-C dongle to get Raw files from the SD card directly onto my phone (It's nice because the files are so small with a 6.1 megapixel sensor). I usually use some film presets that VSCO used to sell back in the day, but unfortunately they are no longer available. I like using the presets because it's quick and I can send to family and friends easily through any messaging apps (since it's not a high resolution sensor, the files are very easy to manage). I have VSCO's 07 pack and I usually use the following presets from that set:
      -Agfa Portrait XPS 160
      -Agfa RSX 50
      -Kodak Ektar 25
      -Ilford Pan F 50

    Interesting your video. It is a very honest review. This camera I would love to have it in the first place because it is a beautiful design and very creative and functional. On the other hand, and although the sensor seems to be from prehistoric times, enlargements could be made on 20 x 30 cm paper with good quality and the color reproduction and those shades of black and white I really like a lot. Congratulations Nio!

      Thanks you sir for the feedback!
      Yes, it is a wonderfully designed camera and it operates in a very tactile way that is reminiscent of film era cameras.
      I have not printed images from the R-D1 yet, but I have in the past had images from my old Nikon D100 printed. Both cameras share the same Sony built CCD sensor and I remember being comfortable with 8x10 inch prints (I think that's roughly around 20x30 cm). I even remember I had one photograph printed in 16x20 inches, that may have been pushing it for 6.1MP haha but it was in monochrome so it didn't look too bad to me, I was happy with it (:

    Great first video Nio! Your delivery is so relaxed & not overproduced like some camera videos. I definitely agree with another comment I read, that states that it feels like we are sitting in a café discussing cameras with you.👍🏼
    I can see that the R-D1 is a great camera & that it should be held in high regard for being a breakthrough camera, the first digital rangefinder. However, I need to ask a question that might ruffle some feathers. (Please note, this is simply a question & not a judgment.) Why would you buy a R-D1 in 2021, when you can buy a very nice Fujifilm X-PRO1 & a few Fujinon lenses for the same price? I'm all about value for money & think that the X-PRO1 would be a much better purchase.
    Thank you,
    Chris - A camera & photography enthusiast/collector. My current main camera is a Fujifilm X-E3 with a Fujinon 27mm f/2.8 lens & a plethora of vintage lenses. I also shoot with a Canon A-1, Canon AE-1, Canon Autoboy AF35M, & Zeiss Ikon Contessamat SE.

    • @niogomez

      Hi Chris! Thank you kind words and the constructive feedback, I'm just a regular guy doing regular things so it really means a lot to me!
      And thank you for your question (no worries, no feathers were ruffled) lol (:
      I picked up my R-D1 in November of 2020, but had been looking since about 2018-ish. I actually had a Fuji X-Pro2 with the Fujinon 23mm f2 WR and enjoyed that combo while I had it. It really was a great camera! But I yearned for something that had an actual rangefinder focusing mechanism. Although the Fuji had amazing build quality and took excellent photographs it didn't have that the manual feel I was desiring in a true rangefinder. On the film side of the house, I was able to pick up a Leica M4-P along the way and I think that gave me the shooting experience I was looking for, but it was a film camera. As much as I love shooting film, I was interested in having a similar shooting experience but with a digital workflow. I was extremely fortunate to at have at one point owned the Leica M9 with a factory updated sensor, that was a great camera too, but it still, to me at least, did not offer the same shooting experience and feel that my M4-P provided. So I sold the M9 and once again started looking for an R-D1. Thankfully, after much patience, I found my copy for a good price and I haven't looked back! For me personally, I think it made sense to go with the R-D1 for getting a digital workflow for images while maintaining a true mechanical shooting experience with the use of a rangefinder. One thing I said in the video (I think it was when I was talking about the shutter cocking lever) was that there was no other [digital] camera like it in the market today, and that I don't think that there ever will be. For me personally, the R-D1 is special because how unique it is and because of the way it feels when you look through the viewfinder, compose the scene in frame lines, advance the lever, and actuate the shutter release button... this feeling was one of the things that made me fall in love with photography in the first place - the act of capturing the photograph! I use both film and digital today, but I'd say that the R-D1 is the only camera that can give me that real analog feel when I want it while still keeping me in a digital workflow.
      Sorry if that was a long explanation on why I would buy an R-D1 in 2021 lol!
      In terms of value for money though I think you are entirely right, the X-Pro1 is a fantastic choice!
      Thank you again for your comment and happy shooting ^_^

    Looks like a novelty camera to me. Nice to have that analog film feel, reminds me of my Canon P rangefinder back in the late 90's. However only disadvantage is you cannot do burst continuous shooting on that one with that lever needs to be cranked each time you take a picture. Definitely not for sports shooting.

    • @niogomez
      @niogomez  2 года назад

      Ah the Canon P! I've held a used copy in a local camera store once but have never owned one, it seemed like a great mechanical camera with a reliable rangefinder!
      And yes, The R-D1 definitely has an analogue feel to it, but it just keeps you in a digital, albeit slow, workflow. And you are correct, there is definitely no continuous burst mode on this camera hah! Definitely not for sports, wildlife, birding, of anything like that! (:

Believed or not I'm on the fence about buying R-D1 right now and looks like you tilted it towards getting it, thanks for that! I have this crazy idea about using Pentax lenses with Fotodiox(el cheapo...) or Novoflex(real good German engineering!) on it but I'm automatically losing focusing and would have to focus by eye only(sounds like fun right?) Any thoughts on that? or personal experience?

      If you do end up getting an R-D1 I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!
      I've only ever used M-Mount lenses on my copy, and since it does not have an electronic viewfinder or any sort of live-view functionality, using non-rangefinder-coupled lenses may prove tricky. Of course you could use the hyperfocal scale on a Pentax lens for zone focusing, but personally I think I'll stick with the good 'ol rangefinder patch (:
      Speaking of Pentax though, I am thoroughly enjoying my recently acquired Pentax LX! It's a cool (cool lol) camera and when paired with the 40mm f2.8 it is an great compact everyday carry! Maybe I'll do a video on it in the near future ^_^

I used to have a D-100 but sold it many years ago, but to my eye at least, files seem similar. The Leica M9 on the other hand is different. I used to own an M9, I also sold that sometime ago but sometimes I really miss it. It's the only full frame CCD Leica M Mount Rangefinder camera so it too was something very special! that Kodak sensor was just fantastic, but plagued by that corrosion. For me though, I still really like the shooting experience of the R-D1. The M9 was a nice rangefinder for sure, because of how unique the R-D1 was, I just think it's in a league of its own (:

    awesome review, could you justify the price based on modern cameras that perform in similar ways

    • @niogomez
      @niogomez  2 года назад

      Hi Jared! Thanks for the encouraging words sir (:
      In terms of specs and performance, I don't think you could justify the price of this camera. Simply put, it is an expensive camera that has remained expensive up until now. But the reason I think it is such a niche product is because it is entirely different from modern cameras. Nowadays, It's very hard to find a "bad" camera. Digital cameras today are all just so good! Technology has advanced so much, sensors as well as image processors from every manufacturer are able to perform sooooo well! I don't even know what the highest ISO of the Sony A7Siii is, it's more 0's than I see in even ordinary non-photography related things lol.
      I honestly don't think you could justify price of the R-D1 based on performance, because if competing toe-to-toe with modern cameras the R-D1 would be left in the dust. I think the reason you get this camera is all for the experience. The CCD sensor though is a plus for me! Although it's antiquated tech in the camera industry, I think CCD sensors render light quite nicely but I think that might be a whole different rabbit hole altogether! (:
      Thanks again for your comment Jared!
