One of my alltime favorite songs, in my opinion, the opening is the greatest in recording history...what the Kinks did with the instruments they had is unbelievable...I never get tired ot this masterpiece....
One of the best guitar solos ever done in rock music, short, explosive as hell, and straight to the point: Eargasm! Ray Davies' muffled "Ooh naoou" is damn appropriate too!
Actually, this is the best solo ever.. No distortion or effects.. Just pure guitar. No one dares today to play "pure" anymore... These guys invented rock´n noice without any effects!! PPPFF!!
I was in the sixth grade when this song first came out, and I thought it was the greatest. Forty-six years later, it still makes me stop, sit up and listen.
You Really Got Me - The Kinks [London, England] - 1964 - "No.07 on 10/24/1964. 10 weeks Top 40. AMG pick. This is their signature song. One of their BEST." - The Ep Collection [02/10]: Kinksize Hits.
They were the first band to use fuzztone. It was distortion achieved by cutting their speakers. The extra vibration due to the slashed speakers is what gives the fuzztone effect.
I'm talking about the album version of the song. In the studio, they took a studio musician who began to be known to do the solo : Jimmy Page. I'm sure about that
It's true that Eddie VH added about 3 notes to the riff but I dont' think it really translated into "better". I do like both and I was lucky enough to score a ticket to one of their shows in December but I prefer this version.
does anybody know the title of a song from THE KINKS that says "it's really good to see you rocking out and having fun, living life you've just begun, accepting life and what it brings, i know tomorrow you'll find better things"??? i just can't find it. thanks.
Whatever. This version has character. The timre and expression is so much more deep than Van Halen's flashy boasting solos. The Kinks helped invent the punk genre with their brilliant minimalism. Van Halen is all flash and sterilized.
@yaidontthinkso the beatles where good and more happy sounding, with really well writen songs. just compare this song to Eleanor rigby and you'll see my point. in skill they where generaly equal.
OK, take a deep breath and repeat after me. Dave Davies invented this guitar sound and everyone else copied it. Jimmy Page, Pete Townsend, etc. If Jimmy Page invented this sound, why didn't he use it before this song? Many people verify the story of 17 year old Dave Davies slicing his speaker with a razor blade to get the distortion. What's Page's story? Did he keep playing every Kinks solo which is obviously in the same style by the same guy? The ultimate rock urban myth. TOTAL BS.

The studio version is 100 X better than any of the live concerts. I Love IT!
Thanks
every song, that little buzz the guitar makes, it just adds a little flavor all their own to it.
Unbelievably, they're STILL one of the most underrated groups of all time....
i love the beatles.
i love nearly all sixties music.
and i love the kinks, totally under-rated!
im 53 and have seen them singing this live !!! Annete England

They were the first band to use fuzztone. It was distortion achieved by cutting their speakers. The extra vibration due to the slashed speakers is what gives the fuzztone effect.

Oh Belle you just will never know !!
@nmatavka this surely is the origin of punk - the same ethos in those, loud, simple, just whatever we can do.
Bellissimi!!!
If these younger dudes and dudettes were teenagers during this era! They have no idea what they missed out on!
goosebumps !!!

And let's not forget Shel Talmy, the producer, who pulled the whole thing together.
We are the Mods, we are the Mods, we are, we are, we are the Mods :o)
exelent!
Both versions are great. This one is cool cause it's original. And I like Van Halen's version cause it's energetic like Blue7869 says.
thanks a lot!!
Definitely the best of the "British invasion" bands.
David Lee Roth is a forgotten carnival barker and cannot touch the raw sexuality of the Kinks' version of this song.
best. video. ever.
lol.
=)
It's true that Eddie VH added about 3 notes to the riff but I dont' think it really translated into "better". I do like both and I was lucky enough to score a ticket to one of their shows in December but I prefer this version.
jimmy page played the rhythm guitar in the studio version
that was good...
does anybody know the title of a song from THE KINKS that says "it's really good to see you rocking out and having fun, living life you've just begun, accepting life and what it brings, i know tomorrow you'll find better things"??? i just can't find it. thanks.

They got their distortion by slicing a big hole in the speaker cone in their amp.
count down to d hour 5 hours remaining (my friend and i are going to tp and destory a random house
1964.
vivan los enemigos!
once. i took acid and watched Stingray and listened to this.
go figure.
@boo8361
im sure van halen would agree with you
I prefer this---the Kinks are almost proto-punk. Don't believe me? Check out the similarity between this and Sheena Is A Punk Rocker.
I heard he played the lead guitar. I'm quite sure it's him who did the solo
@eut256 The original is always the best!
i like this version better than van halen's version
Whatever. This version has character. The timre and expression is so much more deep than Van Halen's flashy boasting solos. The Kinks helped invent the punk genre with their brilliant minimalism. Van Halen is all flash and sterilized.
14 don't like ?! It's not posible !
I luv this song, itz awsome. Van Halen's iz better, but this version rox 2!
Jimmy Page on guitar
And hey if anyone thought Barbara Eden was hot..plus it or do not I am not looking for votes just to feel I am not alone lol
play piano is Jon Lord e solo guitar Jimmy Page....una chicca...
@hey555ish1 Or perhaps more accurately, there's no record producer with the balls to put it out.
Arthur Lee and Ray Davies were the leaders not the sell outs.
@yaidontthinkso the beatles where good and more happy sounding, with really well writen songs. just compare this song to Eleanor rigby and you'll see my point. in skill they where generaly equal.
One of the crappiest solos ever, but so good because of what it was. XD
14 people don't know what music is.
Now its all rap and killling and blah blah
Van Halen is stupid for trying to remake this.
This is called a guitar solo, not a riff lol.
