I really like this idea, but I see 3 problems. 1) There will have to be a lot of these car stations so people don't have to walk far to find one. Especially in the rain. 2) If you're buying things (groceries, furniture, etc.) you probably can't fit it and you'd have to lug it from the station to your house. 3) What do you do with the joystick? It's a little big to fit in your pockets. I really hope they fix these problems because this could be an amazing transportation system.
Everyone bitching about sharing a car has clearly never rode on a bus, train or commercial airline. Its just another form of public transport, and a very nice one. My only gripe is the joystick. If you want to own a car, own one, some people can't or simply don't want to. No one is forcing you to use this.
Shared vehicles are actually in use already. The city of Calgary, for example, has put in service the Car2Go. This is basically a Smart car rental. It has some advantages too, like not having to care much about the car maintenance. You only pay for the time you use it. The City Car looks like an innovative solution. The promoters might like to contact Motor Development International to study the possibility of using a compressed air motor instead an electric one. The costly rare earths battery and its environmental impact, would be replaced by a simple clean air container.
compressed air actually sounds pretty interesting, but i'm sure there are some other concerns. batteries are somewhat expensive and have some environmental impact, but at least they haven't chosen to burn oil as that would have been hundreds of times worse.
You rent the time in the car out,You keep up the weekly VMR,and maintaince. Which give people a good job and bring real value to the company. SAVE,TIME,SHOW YOU WHERE TO GO AND STAY. 2-SEATER.
The Renault Twizy seems like an excellent vehicle for urban and suburban use especially in a two or, three car family. Most miles driven are with one person in a vehicle and within 20-30 miles from home. The Twizy already can handle this with ease. With the ageing of America and elsewhere, many seniors are running errands close to home and often out with just their significant other. There will always be the need for soccer mom vans, but I think we are seeing more need for lighter, more compact and economical forms of road transportation. I could get by with just a Twizy and an occasional rental car for rare LD trips.
If the cities want it to be quick, easy and convenient to get from A to B, the first step would be to stop making A and B so far apart. For 6,000 years we've been refining cities to work for people where everything was nearby and convenient. Cities were continually improving and were centers of prosperity and growth. For the last century we've been making cities work for cars. We've segregated the destinations, with housing in one place, work in another and commerce in a third area, as far apart as possible, so people would be forced to buy a car to do what they used to do by walking out their front door. The result has been congestion, pollution and a cycle of increasing debt as the costs of the cities spiral far beyond what the revenues can pay for. Start building cities for people again and we can have nice things again. With much less congestion and pollution.
Claude In Europe (Russia) we don't have this problem. Our cities are created for pedestrians from the beginning. It is the U.S.A. that creates cities for cars!
We where I do my shopping from the supermarket purely? The car is probably a looker and be fun, but two shopping bags full of food I would want their money. The car can even run quietly bring fun, but its use as Altagswagen for the city shall be fully valid yet. In the BMW Isetta fit on the small backseat small purchases purely or toddler
In the meantime you'll still need separate car lanes for small electric vehicles. In London they have taxi and bus lanes and cameras to monitor those vehicles and this could be an option.
Hey David, you should check out Car2Go, it is essentially what this CityCar idea is dreaming of. Car2go has been here in Austin for 5 years and we, swipe in and use 300 cars around the city using a smartphone app to locate cars to rent. Free yo mind man
great idea i really like the car, however id love the opportunity to own one, i have seen an "AirPod" car, was wondering if you could incorporate a small compressor to run the car on air that would in turn convert to power to charge the compressor, charge the battery cells from the wheels of the car when going down hill. and having a small air tank to hold the compressed air that you can top up at any service station, with the opportunity to buy a larger model for private use out of built up areas. Love the shapes... keep up the good work
What if the last driver had her dog slobbering all over the seat? Or a drunk passenger who hurled all over it? The customization does take a bit of the burn out of the "shared vehicle" concept, since people do have pride of ownership. Of course we don't see this happening yet in cities or ... anywhere. Maybe in 2112?
What if you leave something in one of the cars you 'share'? I don't think the 'share' idea will catch on (we love to personalize our cars way too much), but the small size and maneuverability (and probably fuel/electric efficiency) will be a plus for it. Now that both the Chevy Volt (gas/electric hybrid) and the Tesla Model S (full electric) have both won 'Car of the Year', I think we will see some amazing things in the next 10 to 20 years. Especially if battery technology can keep up...
@haobio Sure, but for buses to go everywhere people want they have to be empty much of the time but still traveling a route. If we could dispatch buses or big taxi's to take a bunch of people who wanted a certain customized route, using software to smart it up, that might work, but still, if you have a bunch of little tiny electric vehicles, that's about as good, energy-wise, and possibly more effective than everybody waiting for the person getting on or off to get it together.
WOW! A two seater 1 in front and a seat in back facing the back,to seat or for packages. A camro also in the car,GPS,1 on 1 help for IMFOR,if new in town.

Also, if the downtown areas ever pass the no fossil fuel vehicles zone. These little cars would make a great supplemental short distance traveler. Or the bus, bike, electick skateboard.
excellent idea and its totally do-able. "zip" cars have been around for years so the whole, "share", program is already in place. just goes to show what people are capable of when we put are minds to it.
Great idea :-) - Now add to the car over unity or Nikola Tesla style (Pierce Arrow prototyped by Westinghouse) electrical system & boom - No More offshore drilling risks needed.
Aaaand this idea will fail miserably. Why? Because it's all good up until the point where they say the idea is for "shared vehicles". Nobody wants to share their vehicle with a bunch of strangers (imagine the mess inside, or even possibly getting busted for someone else's drug stash?!), also nobody wants to WALK several blocks in the HOPES of finding a spare vehicle. Last thing I'd want if I had say, a job interview, is to discover the nearest spare vehicle is 20 miles away and I have to get a bus just to get to the car. Also, I'd like to point out this concept wouldn't work even if you DID outright own a vehicle of this type. As soon as you "fold" it some idiot will park right behind you, and then you'll have no room to "stretch" the car back out again to drive away. A for effort, F for execution.
However they already have bikes in paris and places like that, where you can put a coin in to get a bike, ride it to another location, drop it off, you see people on them all the time. its not idea but one day this is how we will live.
do you know what the internrt is? do you have a smartphone? locating these vehicles is easy. sure it depends a bit on luck, but it gets better the more cars there are. if at least a few people in your block have the plan they'll make sure to have a car around.

The concept behind the "idea" of this car is very cool and impressive. However, the untold issues that would occur "sharing" the CityCar could virtually have no end. IT would work only by putting down a nice deposit and renting the time in it, by credit card and camra in the card. TO HELP TOUREST,GPS,ONE ON ONE HELP!,BEST PLACE TO GO SURE,CAN!,HAD A GREAT TIME AND SAVE MONEY TOO.
nice concept sharing cars, but who feels responsible for cleaning and paying for damages and scratches? it's not going to be different then renting cars. not really efficient. I would buy one for myself but not renting or sharing
I don't really understand why is everybody trying to revolutionise the whole concept of "the CAR" in order to find a parking lot (or to fit them in small parking lots)? How difficult is it to build parking places? They can be built either above or below the ground. Every built building should have at least 2 parking places / appartment + 2-3 parking places for guests. With the new concept, God forbid you forget something in your shared car! Nope - you'll have to carry with you everything that you normally leave in the car. How many cars will be available? What happens at rush hour, when most of the people need the city car at the same time? The rich ones get their cars and the poor ones should wait or walk? Or the poor ones should buy their own car if they aren't rich enough to afford the fees to share a car? What about shopping? Try to go out with your partner and shop for the whole weekend in these city-bug-cars. I'm curious how many round trips you need in order to get everything you want. What about families? How do you fit a family of 4 or 5 in the city car and where do you fit the shoppings? (Do not forget that children under 12 need to sit in big, bulky child seats!) The city cars will be electric. How many hours will they need for a full charge? What happens if you get in a car after a person who almost emptied it's accumulator? You run it for the remaining 5 miles and then you change car? And so on ....
+Cristian Baluta . . . . These cars would let you know if you were about to forget your personal items, All those parking lots could be converted to housing for the homeless, income based apartments, ect. Families would just take more than one car and have more freedom to branch off a bit and meet back up later at a resturaunt they agree on.
Other people will take that extra space saving to park too close to you. How then are you to fold out when there is no space. Having a joy stick is a bad idea. Its not central so it will ache your shoulder and as an ex games maker/ Player.. it just sucks. I would rather have a keyboard than a joystick for driving. I love my vans huge stearing wheel.
it's amazing and good idea when a man start to think about the space in this earth, the population of people always increase every year make street ànd highway full with cars.....you must minimize your car!!!
Everything about this car turns me off. It's too small, it's really only meant for large cities like NY where most people don't drive anyhow, and the idea of sharing a vehicle with others doesn't bode well with my independent mind set. You are completely thinking on a small mindset. Toss the blue prints in the trash and start over again.
i like that guy, he thinks radically out of the box like i do, this vehicle design and his ideas are awesome
I really like this idea, but I see 3 problems.
1) There will have to be a lot of these car stations so people don't have to walk far to find one. Especially in the rain.
2) If you're buying things (groceries, furniture, etc.) you probably can't fit it and you'd have to lug it from the station to your house.

the joystick is weird ... but i think they already have autonomous driving in mind. also adding a steering wheel wouldn't be that hard.

Could start with small communities or we could use a Pay-as-you-go system. But I want one of my own.

What about families? How do you fit a family of 4 or 5 in the city car and where do you fit the shoppings? (Do not forget that children under 12 need to sit in big, bulky child seats!)
The city cars will be electric. How many hours will they need for a full charge?
What happens if you get in a car after a person who almost emptied it's accumulator? You run it for the remaining 5 miles and then you change car?
And so on ....
your points are moot.
+Cristian Baluta . . . . These cars would let you know if you were about to forget your personal items, All those parking lots could be converted to housing for the homeless, income based apartments, ect. Families would just take more than one car and have more freedom to branch off a bit and meet back up later at a resturaunt they agree on.
what if i am drunk
First time I stepped into a car that some loser had thrown-up in, I'd cancel my subscription in the program. Private ownership IS the way to go.
ESE AUTO LO QUIERO PARA MI AMO, YO TENGO UN LUGARCITO EN EL PISO A LA DERECHA
is it true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't want to share my fucking car with anyone.
then don't.
it's amazing and good idea when a man start to think about the space in this earth, the population of people always increase every year make street ànd highway full with cars.....you must minimize your car!!!
Right, because everyone in the world thinks exactly like you do.
It will never happen. We like our Ferraris and Lamborghinis too much.
@FissionNonStop I just like my 350 gas guzzeling polar bear killing truck.

Seven years on and NOTHING!
