  • Simple tips to calm your horse: Horses are very emotional and energetic creatures and they're very highly sensitive. They have the ears and nose to help them learn as they need to get out of the way quickly, and rather than trying to desensitize horses its better to help them learn how to calm themselves.

Hello. I have a mare who is arabian and therefore, naturally moody. When calm, she is a gentle soul but things such as care and petting, she pins her ears and swings her head as your horse was here. I see this as he just being snotty and if her head invades my space, I gently push it away and speak in a firm tone. However, she is 11 now and should be used to touch and work and she still thinks she can say no. Are there any ways to calm, her being a mare vs. a stallion?

if that horse kept nippin like that..ears pinned ..you should have been a little harsh ,and learned him QUICK..i know its not the "new way" of horsemanship...but its really the only way when they act like that in cases of SAFETY and bitting. the 1850~s way of correcting that is warranted .i hope you dont get hurt. great vids.wifey and i are fans of channel!

What if your horse doesn’t like being pet on the forehead? My horse always moves his head away or mildly throws his head. How do I teach him that he can tolerate/trust my petting him there? He trusts me everywhere but the forehead; putting a bridle on, and touching his ears, is no problem.

Good question. If your horse does not like to be petted on the forehead, then I suggest you do not pet him there. Horses, like people have spots that feel good and spots that do not feel good. Typically if a horses does not like a particular area touched, it is because it either does not feel good and there is tension, or they have in the past had an uncomfortable experience. If you need to be able to touch a particular area, then scratch or touch other places that your horse does enjoy around the area and gradually work your way to the area your horse may not want you to touch. Often those areas “open up” and the horse will enjoy it. A good rule of thumb is to let your horse let you know what feels good, and then start with your horse’s favorite places for touch.
Other reasons that sometimes are associated with discomfort of touch include headaches, tight fascia or past pain. And behaviorally, horses do not typically touch each other heads - although they do rub on each other, so scratching a horse’s head is not the first choice for many horses. . Head to the withers and neck for scratching. Most horses prefer to “ask” you to touch them and they will let you know where it feels good. Sounds like you know your horse and are a good “listener”.

To help calm him whilst riding ..??

    • @maryannsimonds6464

Cayleigh. Thank you for your question. There are a variety of ways to calm your "hot" horse. The first step is to find out why your horse is hot and "looky". Many behavioral "hot "horses calm down significantly when they feel better. A horse with discomfort in their poll, neck, shoulders or back will often get very quick in an effort to "run away "from the discomfort. Ulcers are another common cause of "hot" horses who are "looky". They tend to be spooky because they do not feel like they can move comfortably to get out of the way of threats. Getting your hands on your horse and doing a full body assessment is key before riding to make sure your horse does not have tension, ulcers or bad fitting tack.
If your horse's body is in good shape, the second step is to train your horse to relax with touch riggers you start on the ground. Horses seek reassurance with nose bumps to their friends. By gently allowing your horse to nosebump the back of your hand for security on the ground, and then put your had over the withers, you connect the fore brain to the hind brain for relaxation. Most horses enjoy having their withers scratched and if they do not, you know they are holding tension. Once this relaxation trigger is trained into the brain you can sue a hand on the wither while riding for relaxation.
Others actions include deep breathing together to help synchronize you and your horse's breathing. As social mammals horses tend to breath with the social group, so if you learn to breath and relax it is likely your horse will learn the same way to relax. You can also use walking and trotting in a serpentine to go from right brain to left brain. This back and forth relaxes and balances the brain. Tapping" a process of gently tapping the body particularly on the neck and withers gently and continuously can also help relax your horse.
Keep us posted on how you do and let us know if you have further questions.
