Hes a very young dog with a full life in front of him. And he wasn't abused, just not given the attention he should have had. A blank slate, no bad behaviors that he picked up. Health, and many good days ahead.
One of my boys spent his first year with an owner dying from cancer. His second year was spent tied to a tree. He was an ill mannered brute with a great heart.
He's 16. Remembers nothing from the bad years as far as I can tell. He has his cgc, cgx-a, BN, RN and several herding titles from a non akc herding club. Other than agility, which he despised for some reason, he did almost everything my dogs with papers can do. He just couldn't do the beauty pagent portion.

The shelter did nothing to help him get adopted. How he behaved in the very first video, would have made most people look elsewhere. He did not know how to socialize, and was scared at everything and everyone. He stood there staring only at the door of the room with his back to the family for like an hour. He was anti-social, but not his fault. Shame on this shelter. Some shelters do more than just provide a hunk of concrete to sleep on and food, they actually interact with animals, socialize them to people and other dogs, and take them outside each day. That's what a good shelter does.

Thank you for introducing us to Pollux, he reminds me a lot of my girl "Jif" who my adopted in Phoenix, AZ during one of their drives to get their animals adopted. She was the only dog that sat in the far corner of her cell (that's the only thing I can call it), head hanging, trying to make herself as small as possible, while all around her all the other dogs were competing for attention. It took us a few passes before we decided to pick her & through all the chaos she practically led us to my grandmother who sat out in the yard, with all those kids, parents, other dogs, stood in front of her, put her head on nana's knee & gave a slow wag of the tail in the hope that we would pick her. Well, that's all it took for dad to be convinced, he said "that's the one" and off we went to finalize the paperwork. While he was doing that, I took her out to the parking lot for a little walk before we headed home, she squatted for about 1:00, never saw a dog pee for that long, took a few steps and went #2. By the time we got home, she was a completely different dog, no more sad dog, she had what I used to call "crazy face", with the tongue hanging out & the eyes so big & she KNEW she was home for good. The only history we got was that she was rescued from an abusive situation & just had a litter of puppies. I wish I could have seen them, I bet they were adorable cuz mum was. She was the gentlest soul and how someone could abuse her makes me so angry. Her reaction to men in uniform told us that her original owner was either a cop, a postal worker or someone in the service. Sorry, I've just gone on & on here, I'll keep updating on the antics of Pollux et al, if you keep posting them, they're very entertaining.

i had the same sleeping issue with my rescue- I would think that he slept with one eye open. It took about 6 months for him to realize that this was his forever home. He was returned 4 times to the shelter. But I have him 5 years now and he is the best dog ever

    • @marytouchstone1
      @marytouchstone1 3 года назад +4

The way I ended up with my dog was when I called to return him, please don’t judge me because I didn’t know better back then. The rescue never told me that he was abused, much less to the extreme amount and years of abuse he went through. He would shake so violently at anything to the point that he’d pee all over himself. I originally signed up for a normal dog. When I got him for the week long meet and greet, I got him and a bottle of Paxil antidepressants. The same antidepressant that humans take. The first day I left him alone, he destroyed every single special order wooden blind in my home. My house looked like a crack house for 3 weeks until the new ones arrived. Anyway, that happened after I signed the adoption papers. As long as he didn’t hurt a person like this, we were fine. It was $1750 but he’s more important.
Anyway, when I called to return him, they told me that he had been returned 4 times, like it was no big deal. That’s when I knew Roscoe was my dog. I told them that dogs are not refundable. It was the first time I ever worked with a dog of such extreme abuse. Now, I have two dogs that are survivors of extreme abuse. They’re extremely spoiled and happy. I am honored to be their human. I pray they feel the same way about me.
Pollux is blessed to have you and you’re blessed to have him. When you saw his profile, I honestly believe that it was a sign from above that y’all were meant to be. #polluxrocks

I rescued a dog named Thomas. He was left at a shelter after being hit by a car...fractured pelvis, brain trauma, bruised shoulder, eye that bounce back and forth. He was in such pain, when he came to me to be fostered. I have a 9 yr old trained therapy dog. She is a lab. Bailey, would lay next to him and take toys to him! She mothered him. He was in a lot of pain and standing was painful. Bailey was his model on “how to dog!” He watched her and just did what he did. Amazing they bonded like your too! We fell in love with Thomas and before the week was out, I became a foster mom failure. Bailey and I adopted Thomas...he is here forever. He had a lot of things to learn, but he is such a lover boy. I really relate to what you are going through. Every day is a new experience....oh Thomas chewed the corner of my baseboard so bones were replaced instead of the baseboard...he didn’t know he couldn’t do that until I showed him. Training had to start immediately, so he didn’t learn any behavior that wasn’t acceptable. “No” became the first word he learned.

I just was released from the hospital a few hours ago and stumbled upon this video. My dear husband and I always owned all sorts of Collies. For the past 6 years, after our last Collie died, we own a really adorable and loving Pomchi. Our first time owning a small dog. We absolutely love him, of course. We live in a retirement community at the Shore. Lots and lots of deer, wild turkeys, groundhogs, squirrels, and only one mean neighbor who chases them all away from her yard. She doesn't like animals at all and there's a very nice apple tree in our yard which animals come to eat. I believe it's God's way of feeding all sorts of wildlife, including humans, if you ask me. I don't know her at all, so enough about that lol. Sorry. It made me feel so good watching your videos and seeing how much you care about precious animals. ❤Thank you for cheering up an old lady who loves dogs and all animals and birds alike. My goodness, that sure is a loving family and those are awesome dogs.

God Bless you and your loving family. I can relate to everything on your video, and share your approach. Dogs just want to please us, love us and be loved themselves. I never understand when people get angry about a pet accident, it’s almost always a misunderstanding, or medical problem but we must consider how would we get along in a new environment, completely foreign? We learn from our pets and they from us. But initially they have no idea what the new owner wants and don’t know how to communicate in our language. I wish everyone would stop and try to see things from an animals view. People who expect perfect behavior all the time, and immediately would do well to look in the mirror before raising their voice. Picture themselves in a foreign environment and what to do when you can’t communicate with anyone. Nigh5 time is my favorite because all the pets pile into bed and soon there is the peaceful sound of everyone snoring softly or purring and then I am lulled to sleep too! It’s so uplifting to see people like you and your family in a world that desperately needs a little love and peace.

Her name is Gracie, well she was about 10 to 12-week old when she came to our door on one very cold night, it was about 9F° outside and she scratched at our door wanting in and of course we let her in.. We found out she was the neighbor's puppy that lived down the road, she had no shelter, well she had a cardboard box..if you call that a shelter.. A single mother with three children had owned her...we found out they all was very abusive toward her.. So we kept her, took her to the vet, she received her shots and we had her spade....and that was 6-yrs ago..

Pollux's name comes from Greek mythology, the brothers Castor and Pollux, and that's where the star's name comes from too! Castor and Pollux are twin brothers, sons of Zeus from Sparta, and are associated with the constellation of Gemini.
I'm so happy to look at Pollux coming out of his shell and becoming the happy puppy he should have been from day 1. His story is a reminder to get our pets spayed and neutered, because you never knwo when a doggy will have a litter, how many puppies will be born, but most of all, if they're going to be adopted and treated well. So many cats and dogs get abandoned in shelters, and the overcrowding being so bad that a lot of them get put down is heartwrenching.
So THANK YOU for giving this adorable baby a new life. THANK YOU.

My husband and I adopted a puppy who was only 4 weeks old. We were told his mommy had been killed. We already had 3 dogs at home but my husband was such a softy he had to have him. We named him Mortimer and the vet weighed him and he was only 6 grams. We had to bottle feed him every 4 hours , I was exhausted but it was worth it. He grew up and weighed in at 20 lbs.
Well long story short we discovered he was totally blind but he got around the house and back yard without any difficulty. We had a pool and he only fell in once and after that never again. He also peed sitting down but thank goodness he never peed on himself. We loved all our dogs but Mort holds a very special place in my heart. We had him for 18 wonderful years. Bless you and your family for what you have done for your special baby.

Pollux rolled around on the new bed so that it would smell like “him”! And he does recognize that the new bed is HIS bed, and he was smiling and laughing.
He’s such an expressive dog! His facial expressions say so much.
Dogs with “herding” instincts get very nervous when members of “his herd” (i.e., family member!) are spread out through the household, and he can’t see everyone at once. This is especially important at bedtime - they cannot rest until they get the whole “herd” safely in their beds.
The chair-chewing means that he likes to chew harder surfaces - the femur bone is a great idea because it’s a harder surface than the rubber’y chew toys.
Anyone who allowed so many puppies should be beat with a red-hot poker. Thankful that you now have Pollux and I, too, cried tears of joy for him! You’re a GREAT mom - dogs and kids alike! !

It's a shame the shelter doesn't (apparently) have a foster program in the community so dogs like him could have some home experience. Growing up on concrete is terrible for bone development. I have only heard the name Pollux in terms of “Castor and Pollux” They were half twin brothers in Greek and Roman mythology. If you search “Castor and Pollux” in Wikipedia you will have more information. (Too late to change Maxxie’s name, to suit).
In Latin the twins are also known as the Gemini (literally "twins"). So I’m guessing Pollux was destined to pair up with another dog, even he is called Maxxie (not Castor).
So really not an unusual name.

    • @misshavisham3220

Same here--I first learned of Caster and Pollux in the context of Greco-Roman mythology! The star is named after Pollux, along with another star in the Gemini constellation named after Castor. So, the mythology surrounding the twins came first, and the stars were given those names later . . .

This! Also, according to a myth, Castor died and when their father, Zeus, offered Pollux the gift of immortality, Pollux chose to share it with his brother. So according to myth, they spend alternating days on Olympus and Hades. I love the name. :)

Dogs chew for diffrent reasons. Like he chewed on his bed, was the kind of chewing human babys do. To discover the feel and texture of something. He has no feeling in his fingertops like us humans.
The chewing on the chair however is the kind of comfort chewing when a dog feels anxiety. Like little kids suck their thumbs and cats paw and suck on fluffy fabrics.
