#SANIBEL #CAPTIVA #SANIBELISLAND #CAPTIVAISLAND
This is one of the best videos of the damage of Sanibel island resorts
Survivor. Trapped inside my home at 2623 Tamarind Rd. for the duration. Flood water almost up to my neck for hours, flipping the piano, refrigerator, everything over into it. Muck and septic stench overwhelming. Sheet metal ripped off the roof. Rescued on the fourth day. Overwhelmed, but blessed to have survived this horrifying ordeal.
So glad u made it out after that incredible experience! I know where Tamarind is; the surge originally predicted for Tampa area is what Sanibel got, & caused so so much damage. Hard to describe, yet it had been quietly feared for many yrs. Bad hurricanes in this area used to be RARE 😢 😐 Best of luck, Lynn 🍀
So happy you made it! What a nightmare to live through during and now after! I am so sorry! ) :
Holy
Why does someone stay in a place you know that a Hurricaine is going to hit? Is it because you can't leave?
@@williamrosen1769 Some cannot leave & many say they did not get ample warning ahead of time.
Our favorite Island....so many memories.....just heartbreaking for everyone
We are SO blessed to be alive. I have never gone through ANYTHING like this in my 56 years and pray to God this never happens to our beautiful Southwest coast again in my lifetime! #GulfCoastStrong Please pray for us! God speed!🙏🇺🇸🌴
I would like to see film of further up the beach and of the restaurant/shopping area
It breaks my heart to see all of the destruction to Sanibel. It’s ironic that the first thing I see is the Island Inn. We were there in late August. I’ve always described it as a place of joy and peace, a place to let go of worries and stress. I will cherish the memories and hopefully one day have the opportunity to return. As I watch the video I pray for all of those affected by hurricane Ian. May God give you strength and courage in the months ahead.
Unreal. I'm so sorry 😔
It really is devastating to see all this. Sending love and prayers to all those affected by this hurricane.
I really hope and pray that all the people affected by this storm are taking care of , god bless you all .
Oh, my poor Sanibel- this makes me want to cry😢
Me too.
I AM crying!!!
Hotel on the beach...
So smart.
I believe it's up there with homes with no rules.
It’s stunning how so many of the dwellings have nothing left inside - no signs of furniture, appliances, nothing, everything is just gone!
I was thinking the same thing. Where did all the furniture go? Out to sea? Strange.
I was thinking maybe they already took everything out of them after the storm? At first I thought are these new builds because there’s nothing in them but I’m just wondering if they had already cleared out everything
@@jilllovesbeegees70 Everything inside was either washed out to sea or is now a part of the piles of debris strewn across the island.
Nice video my friend. New subscriber. Thanks.
Just visited the island in July. So sad to see such a beautiful place and people devastated
First floor unit in Sanibel Arms building G. That’s where my wife and I first stayed many years ago. Washed out! Heartbreaking 😢😢
At 5:47 min in top left, Is that Tortuga beach club?
Wow thanks for sharing. We have stayed for years at the Sanibel Arms West. There is still a lot of standing water and the beach looks ravaged. I hope the Shell Museum on Captiva survived.
Very skilled drone operator! Thanks
I agree! I pictured the silence on the island and all the damage and nothing but the beeping of alarms and stuff surrounded by the STUNNING beauty of the water and there it was - with that drone, exiting out that “window” - just what I imagined. 😞
Can you show us Periwinkle park, where they kept all the birds???
So strange there’s no sign of any animal life at all. I expected to see some “creatures” from the sea. I saw one video with lots of dead fish but nothing else. Are there alligators?
I’ve been all over the island. Aside from dead fish I’ve seen one dead turtle but not alligators
We stayed at Periwinkle last November, haven’t seen much footage from that area, I think the Coast Guard rescue I saw was from the permanent part of the park. Also what about Jerry’s Market complex?
Wife and I favorite place on Sanibel Island ( Mitchell's SandCastles at 3951 W. Gulf Drive) is totally wiped off the beach!
Fabulous drone footage. Just so sad what you all went through. The damage is so overwhelming… my heart goes out to all.
I have a feeling the Shalimar is gone.
I have been in SWFL for 29 years lots of staycations in Sanibel during the summer when they used to be cheap. I have stayed at some of these places (island Inn, Bluegreen, Sanibel Arms, etc) I spent a 4th of July week at the room @ 9:12 (Sunset Beach Inn) with no causeway the rebuilding will take even longer than FMB (and further damage to structures that could be salvageable its happening right now)
So sad Sanibel is a great place to go visit, very beautiful isle. I pray that they can rebuild, prayers out to all the families that was affected by Hurricane Ian.
Any drone shots of the Sanibel Isles area?
Nice flying!! What drone??
Bet a lot of people will simply walk away from their destroyed property . You just can't live long enough to fight this.
I can't imagine the amount of trash that went into the ocean during this storm.
This is the time to rethink about building in vulnerable land.
I may have missed it but did anyone mention the thistle lodge? We like to eat at the restaurant there when we’re down visiting my sister. I wonder how that place is doing..
Some incredible piloting of your Drone. The aerial views were awesome, but the interior flights, are beyond description. Keep up the great flights. I will be looking forward to more videos. BTW, the resolution is beyond anything I have ever seen!
I agree! So impressed! ( :
Yes. Amazing piloting. What kind of drone might that be???
When you see that it's just one big ancient sand bar you really wonder why people would build there. Then when you see how spectacularly beautiful and unique and how far away the gulf is from so much of the homes (100/200 feet at places) you can absolutely understand why there is so much real estate there. A 15 foot wall of water and 150 MPH winds just randomly showing up and then totally disappearing is one of the strangest, weirdest, meanest things that probably anyone could imagine. With Katrina, it almost made sense because so much was built BELOW sea level. Flooding was almost inevitable. With this, its just unbelievable. Re-build? Then another devastating hurricane in 2023? So sad.
Where does the army of service workers (on Sanibel/Captiva) that cater to these wintering elites live? The Mainland? Pine Island?
Fort Myers and Lehigh acres.
Thank you so much for sharing this footage. You showed both Island Inn and Song of The Sea, two resorts that we have stayed every February for the past 12 years...six times at each. We are booked for February 2023 at Island Inn, which obviously isn't going to happen. We are heartbroken to see the destruction as we have so many great memories of the Island. There is no where else on earth like Sanibel/Captiva and Pine Island. I'm sure that in time, it'll rebuild and better than ever but much of the ambiance is destroyed forever. I could cry just thinking about all of the wonderful people on the staffs of those two resorts and how thoughtful, helpful, cheerful and hard working they all are. We pray that the anguish this has caused all of them can be repaired and replaced with better opportunities. Same goes for the wonderful business owners and restaurant workers and staff. So many wonderful people have had their lives changed for good. Our hearts go out to the residents, particularly those who chose to stay because the information they were given was misleading. Many were just too confident that all would be well, having been veterans of many other storms. This one though will go in the history books. I pray to God this never happens again. Be safe and be well Sanibel. We will be back to support you as soon as you reopen to visitors! Love you all!
Intentionally misleading for sure. Evil beyond evil is at work by the powers that be. Don’t think for a moment it was accidentally misleading… research c loud seeding, it’s beyond comprehensible what man does to man. ✝️🙏🏻
We are heartbroken too for residents of Ft Myers Beach and Sanibel/captiva/pine island. We too had reservations at Island inn in Feb. prayers out to them all
Extremely sad but life must move forward. If you are OK, most of the possessions can be replaced in due time. Learn, plan, love one another, plan for the future, offer Hope to others. Thousands of prayers are being offered for you during these trying times. Open your hearts to receive them. They are yours for the taking! If you have a Faith, reach out to Your Pastor, Deacon, Friends, Therapist, Rabbi,Priest. Trust me, Peace will come to you if your heart is open. Be prepared for a New Beginning. God Bless You from California.
Lovely💕
I can see it now.."construction jobs in Florida..."$9.00 an hour..30 years experience needed."
They'll have to pay more than $9 an hour. that's about 17k after taxes Won't be able to find a one-bedroom for rent for less than $1000 a month. 17k minus 12k is 5k. 5k divided by 12 months is $416 a month to live off of.
@@JoeinWashDC they dont care here...Florida pay is shit. Always has been and that is why no one wants to work here anymore. Employee shortage is real and this is what they will pay to rebuild the homes of the extremely wealthy.
Well it's a Southern state! They like to pay very poor wages. YANKEE here! You couldn't pay me to live in any Southern state South of Maryland! We were a border state in the Civil War! I also like UNIONS! The UNION FOREVER was also a Northern Union Army fight song! 🥰🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲😉😉😉
@@JoeinWashDC it's already $1000 plus for a one bedroom before the storm. The ads for help are started, $15 ph.
That’s crazy construction people should get paid a least $20.00 overtime $30 since that’s over work job 😮
All the furnishings are already removed?
By the storm surge yes
Some of this reminds me of those abandoned videos that are on RUclips of older buildings that people or companies just left behind. Prayers for my fellow Floridians on the west side of the state we are with you 🙏🇺🇸
Amazing drone footage. My husband and I stayed at the Sanibel Arms and fell in love with Sanibel the destruction from Ian to Sanibel, Fort Myers beach is jaw dropping every video I see is heart breaking and gives me chills. My heart and prayers goes out to everyone in Florida.
Sanibel Arms @3:30 and 10:10 Most buildings still there but storm surge must have damaged every thing at floor level
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Can we take waters an food down there
Will they let us in with are 18 wheeler
These are multi million dollar vacation homes and hotels. Anyone left has evacuated.
You can’t get to the island except by boat. The causeway that connected the island to the mainland suffered damage at several different points along its span.
@@jbyoung7397 I thought people were there cause it shows on RUclips in need of food and water
Thank you Mary! I’m sure the Search and Rescue teams that embark from somewhere on the coast would appreciate very much. That’s very kind. I truly don’t understand some of the comments being posted.
@@jbyoung7397 I know 👍
And just where is the state of Florida transporting all the billion$$$ in DEBRIS/TRASH/CONSTRUCTION mess to?? What landfill can accommodate entire counties worth of debris? Recycling? Burn pits? Hazardous materials? Disaster isn't even close to this tragic indescribable mess...😞
That was my 1st thought 10 days ago. Someone's taxes will pay hefty $$ to truck it out of the state. My real concern is how much is already dumped, and what will be dumped out in the ocean.
Why would anyone want a first floor unit ..WHY even have them.
Does not pay to rebuild. Storm after storm will just keep coming year after year.
Wow, that's complete tear down and rebuild.Horrifying ! After this, people won't be able to afford flood insurance in SW Florida and house prices inland will sky rocket...
Many didn't have flood insurance beforehand. Many properties will never rebuilds.
All surge damage is not covered by hurricane insurance unless the property owner bought flood insurance. This will prove to be catastrophic in this hurricane recovery. Sad!
Just jaw dropping, the destruction. Places ripped apart down to the concrete walls, like construction just started. So sad. My thoughts are with everyone.
im surprised so many homes didnt have storm shutters. even though the home itself may not be fully hurrican proof, it makes no sense to allow the windows to get blown out and everything sucked out or washed out.
They have Hurricane impact windows. Storm shutters on floor 1 were no match for Ian anyway. Storm surge blew out hurricane rated garage doors and dragged cars out .
@@GT1004 Thanks for your answer. I've wondered what the damage is for new buildings with shutters and or new roofs. So much of the damage that's been shown has been of trailers or very old buildings. Which while sad is to be expected. This video is the first one I see showing the structural damage on newer or better built buildings. Though most of these are quite old as well.
Not to mention the first one I see of the Sanibel Inn, our winter getaway for many years.
Living in Miami, we've been awfully lucky but I know our time is coming.
Its plain , the land is too low.I bet they had floods during high tides.Very terrible.I lost my home.Everythings being thrown away.
The music is weird. Silence would be more appropriate
To me, the music is beautiful and a requiem as the camera journeys through what for many of us is an overwhelming loss.
Codes need to change because our weather has changed … So sorry for the people in Florida.
No code can stop storm surge.
@@waitaminute2015 you missed the point !!
@@waitaminute2015 If you build a concrete structure on stilts up high enough you can avoid the damaging storm surge for the most part.

Stop building on barrier islands
So much sadness. I will never figure out how or why mother nature has to be so cruel. It's all unrecognizable, people's homes and businesses all just a pile of rubble. Why and how could this have to happen to the most beautiful place on earth?
"Mother Nature" isn't cruel; stuff just happens. Stop ascribing "will" to "Mother Nature"; that's just stupid anthropomorphism.
Man is cruel to mother nature. Man is cruel and greedy to build and rebuild when scientist have been warning for years.
Because it’s literally on the ocean
Bad leader bad weathers always
Poignant music not needed. Sad enough
Weird music choice
The beaches and shoreline should be public. Not just for the wealthy.
They aren’t! But we in the United States of America believe in private property rights, unlike communist or socialist based societies! Sanibel Island has both Public and Private beaches!
Peggy is a woke LESBIAN freak conmie. Fu'k off you freak
@@jbyoung7397 I've walked the private beaches on Captive - but below the high tide line. It is spooky to be alone on a pristine beach. A few feet away it belongs to people who will lie and claim you came on "their property" just to get you trespassed off the entire Captiva "island" which we now know is nothing but a sandbar poking a few feet above high tide. I loved my three week-long vacations living in a rented house on the back bay of Sanibel, but Captiva is the essence of arrogant wealth.
The colonist-settlers from Europe didn't believe the indigenous people living here when they arrived had any property rights because the natives believed the land belong to everyone, not one or two or a hundred people.
"How about letting this Barrier Island go back to NATURE????? " Man belongs to the EARTH. EARTH does NOT BELONG TO MAN"! Chief Seattle! Maryland has a Barrier Island too! Assateague Island Maryland State Seashore and National Park. Assateague Island was formed by a hurricane in the 1930's! Maryland dies not allow any DEVELOPMENT on our beautiful Barrier Island! Only camping is permitted. One summer, our family had to evacuate that Island because of Hurricane Belle! We came back the very next day and had beautiful weather the rest of the week! Assateague Island is also the home of the famous Chincoteague Island wild ponies! Anyone remember reading Misty of Chincoteague as a child? 🌊💙🐬🌊🏖️🌅⛱️🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎
allow it to go back to nature...??...get your facts SIR....70% of the island is RESTRICTED SPACE FOR WILDLIFE.....your viewpoint has HOLES running thru it....just like the storm.
I love all the Ego trips who jump on here , just to tell you their favorite hotel...
WE DO NOT CARE.
GET A REAL LIFE
In 2012, both,DeSantis and Rubio voted against FEMA Relief for those suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
DeSantis and Rubio pride themselves for their love of playing hardball; okay, let's play hardball.
The Senators from New York and New Jersey should block all FEMA Relief to Florida.
Fair is fair.
Not the time or the place..
This is the correct time and place.
I hope and pray that The Senators from New York and New Jersey will block any FEMA Relief for Florida.DeSantis and his ilk have taught me the real meaning of the Word "Schadenfreude",which means "taking delight in the suffering of others".
I am going to show DeSantis how well he taught me this word and put it to good use in these types of situations.
