Incorrect: It wasn’t “predominantly Jewish”; there were a lot more Irish and by the 60’s, there were a lot of Cubans and Puerto Ricans, by the 1980’s, it was predominantly ALL Dominican. I should know, I was born and raised in the Heights in ’62 and my parents came here in the 50’s - thanks for the post though!
Great video! I'm originally from there. Born in roosevelt, and taken from the hospital directly to my crib in Wadsworth terrace. So many memories. I love my town, and miss it dearly. A Merenguazo Limpio!
I lived in washington heights for one year. the day I moved in I was threatened by a group of guys on the street. As the months went on I became friends with them. This place is so lively and amazing. It's a whole different world, and I'll never forget it. I miss it, and all of the families in my building that lived for the moment.
This vid brings me memories of when I used to live in the heights. I lived in the heights from 1997 to 2012. Have great memories; back then, the streets were scary, a lot of drugs but I had a happy childhood cant complaint. Not to long ago, I spoke to a friend of mine and told me that the heights has changed so much. I live in Florida now. This video brought me lots of memories. Thanks for sharing.
I'm from the bay area and been to nyc twice..and both times we stayed in washington heights 169th and broadway..i love it out there..dominican beezys showed much love to us filipino cats
I was technically raised in Washington Heights. The 1970's Washington Heights extended all the way to 145th Street on the westside. Then later, Washington Heights southern border became 155th Street. The area which I grew up was jewish, but later became dominican. Blacks start moving in this area in the 60's. The population of African Americans is significant in the southern end of Washington Heights. There is still a heavy jewish population north of 168th Street west of Broadway.
they do that in the bronx, the heights is a nice neighborhood, u see dominican families tailgating on every corner while blasting bachata and merengue music
i live in washington heights across the street from the bank ive been living here for a very long time and i am a mix ecuadorian and egyptian i belive this video should have shown more people but its a very good video
My whole family grew up in the heights all Irish neighbors back then broadway, dyckman.. I remember them saying when the Dominicans moved in, the neighborhood was going downhill. The Irish dwindled and was forced to move out. (Not saying anything bad personally about Dominicans, just remember growing up hearing that Irish and Dominican neighborhoods clashed often)
man the united palace always walk around theyre but never been inside and it looks nice inside like i think back then long time ago it was like a movie theater and they should put that like a movie theater cause man it would look so cool like a amc or lowes movie theater theyre
You know, I am Dominican too and I never lived in Washington Heights, but I still symphatise with a part of what you said (specifically the first 3 lines) because that which you described, unfortunately happens everywhere. As for the rest of your comment, I understand that sometimes it's difficult not to fall into the mistake of placing everyone that belongs to the same ethnic group into the same pile. Logically speaking though, your statement has no validity.
Response to RD: Even Jamaicans, Grenadians and other Black Caribbeans have similarities to Cubans, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans. They are from Islands. But they differ with language and culture. They also immigrants. African Americans can't speak of such an experience. But here is where all of us are similar. We were all conquered by Europeans. And I feel that alone is enough to tie us together. Even though many Hispanics have European ancestors.
The late 1960s up until the late 1990s was great,we all looked out each other. Now it's much different, but do not be fooled now its meth and heroin replacing crack/coke.The Heights made you street wise.Peace Johnny C Irish since 1964
Excuse me, it isn't 95 percent Dominican. There is a sizable Black population on it southern border (the area that is closes to harlem). And The Jewish population is very well established around the northern west end of Washington Height. I would say about 15 percent. Also, if there are Dominicans, they are other hispanics like Puerto Ricans and Mexicans in this area as well.
As a Domincan who grew up in The Heights, I believe it has absolutely changed for the worse. It is why I moved away..to give my kids a chance to grow in a crime free area, where the music is not blaring at all hours of the night, the streets are clean, and everyone has respect for the law. Unfortunately, Dominicans always want the easy way out, the "hook up", no sense of pride in their neighborhood, dirty, and with the "everyone else be dammed" attitude, because "I got mine". IMHO that is!
maybe my friend. The washington heights is a big place, but the busiest place in the washington height, around where the video was shot, you can see clearly that 90% of the businesses on the streets and people being interviewed were Dominican. And no sorry, dominicans, Mexicans, ans specially not pertoricans, we do not like to stick together. We are as separate as the Italians are from the jewish. Just because we're latinos doesn't mean we're the same.
shut up...this is a DOMINICAN AREA...if your gonna hate, go find a mexican page and then talk all the shit u want there...cuz here, its our home, our culture, our lives we live it up cuz we kno how and we kno we can, we dam proud of who we are, wether we light or dark, poor or rich... WE DOMINICANS TILL THE END its the pride and glory that keeps us happy, so no matter what you say...u still cant tear us down. - i aint hatin on mexicans neither, latino pride, juss bugg out if u gon hate here.
1800's????????? Look at the architecture. Most of the buildings in Washington heights were built after 1900 and many of them were the first to be built on the site. Even the churches (Usually a good time-line indicator) were built in the 20th century. O.K. what buildings remain from the 19th Century or earlier... 1) Morris-Jumel mansion 1765 (I don't think Rodger Morris was Puerto Rican). 2) Highbridge water tower 1872 3) Dyckman house (technically in Inwood) 1785 4) 10 St. Nicholas Pl 1888
I want to know what's the problem with Dominicans being "black" in the first place? Why are so many of you in denial of your cultural heritage?U know why u have merengue music and the food u eat...its because of the AFRICAN slaves brought to DR. Puerto Rico and Cuba also have great African influence. Stop being in denial. Yes not all Dominicans are black but guess what, its the "black" elements that make our culture what it is! .
washington heights will be the greatest neighborhood in nyc when us jews feel comfortable enough walking between the bennett ave community and the yeshiva university vicinity. yeshiva provides a shuttle bus between the two communities to avoid the menacing-looking teens hanging out on the audubon/st nicholas street corners. the day is coming soon...let's all get along!
The division exist because the power system created it. And if they didn't (which they did), they will continue to nurture it, because it keeps them in power (Anglos, Italians, Irish and Jews).
DOMINICANS STAND UP...listen we are live people it just runs in our blood we like to meet new people have fun live shit there's Dominicans that live every where around the world and in our country rich people go to spend their money
Good documentary, but I have only one criticizm. You mentioned of the area being mostly jews, from the 1930's-60's, but you failed to mention the current dominant culture in the community.
yo bro don't speak on your race like that in front of others that ain't us have more pride than that. I don't know your struggles on your experiences con lo dominicanos but please you know the we catch shit from everybody as it is to me the dominican is one of the hardest working most straightforward people on the planet. Dios Patria LIbertad
@@jxrikv No way. The only time you hear English in Manhattan is Midtown or the Financial District. It turns out the Hispanic don't really need English since W.H. is self-sustaining and there is not a great issue since Spanish is so much more than just immigrants.
Hey bezukhof, while i disagree with and am offended by the overt racist tone of your comment, i must admit you you certainly can lay down the smack. So i give you props for that.Good luck with the whole biggot thing.
I laughed so hard when that guy said it changed for the better. That neighborhood turned into a shithole are you kidding me. The immigrants of old valued this country unlike some that have been coming in since the 70’s till today
Superficial divisions that were implanted into the people's minds. This also includes African Americans and Jamaicans. Once people look beyond this chaotic thinking, they will began to appreciate what they have in common. Like for instance, Mexicans and Dominicans have language and culture commonality, but racially, they don't. Puerto Ricans and Dominicans (including Cubans) have more in common. But Puerto Ricans aren't immigrants when they migrate from their island.

what about the illicit sale of powder cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana, and heroine that makes washington heights famous after 11 PM?

I like Washington Heights because of it landscape. But the culture aspects must go to it southern neighbor > Harlem.. hehehe..
I lived in Washington Heights for 12 months. People call it the concrete jungle for a reason.
@alessandro1281 its actualli not a bad area, the bronx is where all the bad stuff is
Wrong, Washington Heights used to be the cocaine capital of America in the 80's , look it up
